From wakeup previous thread "Some of these self-reflective ideas that are raised are so basic, that it bothers me... "

Hey man, a monkey looks in, no mirror looks out, you know? I can see for miles. And they smile back at me, all four of them. Sounds like you need to go read October magazine with your marbles, or you could go to Artforum - there's and angry troll there. Really angry. Has the power to take over your identity. Its uncanny. Merely by mentioning this I give it power, such as it is. Is it?

The powerless use isolated tactics, the powerfull have strategies.

This painting is weird because it comes from the same place as Laura Owens, the Ukioe/ukiyoe print adapted to paint - matisse and his foreground echoing the background mountain - exccept here there is no Fuji San.

Theres this idea - mentioned before - focus - where the elements are paired down (edited) and/or aligned (focused) but the ambiguity stays the same, or even multiplies (better). Thats the hi-fi sweet spot.

compare A.D. 1867

to goya A.D. 1267

Amazing huh? They were executing people by firing squad since forever. ALso, it appears that people were noticing this and actually creating instructional depictions of firing squads for future generations. And goya was painting this (and much larger apparently) FOUR HUNDRED YEARS EARLIER!!!

Im not sure what cherry blossom trees are supposed to do for you.

For me they remind me of the cherry blossom festival (see the link posted earlier).

Cherry blossom festivals are the rural equivalent of spring break, featuring non stop partying by agricvultural students, who "bong beer" and "get rowdy" while "crusing" "main street" RAD!!!! Someone should paint thaqt instead of boring, kitchy, tree branches. Yuck.

I like how the skittles fell on the Kool-aid stained couch...I like this jpeg quite a bit, this works for me... the kitsch is there but the color, variation of surface, application, seem to lead in it's dance with kitsch...it has some of the most interesting aspects of being fashionable going on within it.

Guston would have done a fine Cherry Blossom Festival...Zipthwung your last post was a knockout,so much in there.

uh huh. Well there you go. Im all for rigour, especially when it comes to texture, where you fire p the onions and carrots first,a nd then you hit the softer veggies and finally, you add the spices because they are fragiler, and then you let it simmer to a fine pulp.

My chronology is off because I am refering to the Mongol invasion of Japan - or rather the Discovery? investigation into it, which revealed that they probably used Chinese river boats. There were two invasions, the second being met with a newly erected stone wall, but both being destroyed by fortuitous gales.

is that rigour? I don;t know. I do know Ive been trying to connect the dots since I was in kindergarten and I didnt know who the fuck Shazam was.

"part of the same cultural decline of no rigor but plenty of talk...."

render unto Ceazar that which is coin, because the exchange rate for faoerie gold is one coin to a leaf and one gem to a dog turd.

Currency. Boats. You get my drift?

Goodie.
I don't know what I am saying most of the time so I just comment when I like something.
I think this is a really nice one. Really I just like looking at the images.

i haven't read any comments yet,
has anyone said Laura Owens? her stuff without all the creatures and little blue monkeys?

poppy said...

hey goodie,
this is a BLOG, say it very slowly, see how that sounds? that is exactly what it is. Equivalant of picking your nose and farting excpet you get to hear about some things or artist you haven't heard about. Why anyone would need to stroke their ego on a blog is beyond me..
, alot of talk... this isn't a real conversation my friend.. like poking your cock in a lightsocket..

about the ambiguous comment.. I believe to have ambiguity there has to be some semblance of subject.. that means something focused/ .. overall abstraction is a sign of itself and we read it as such.. decoration.. education..

Zip, does an angry troll really live within Artforum? How do we placate it. Casting runes? Appearing troll-like ourselves? My male shadow self weighs 300 pounds and works at Forbidden Planet. I should know the answers to these questions.

poppy said...

I, on the flipside, understand the cynicism, and where and why it hangs around art and the artworld..
there is alot to filter through..
understanding the whole of history is not the problem, understanding which parts to filter out is better serving..

zipthwung said...

"does an angry troll really live within Artforum?"

Yes, indeed. It has several names and as I said, has the power to take yours - like Satan.

How do we placate it.

1) Why? It reveres duchamp, professes to be a painter by trade, and recognizes several schools of dadaism, claiming to have done extensive research on duchamp and to have taught art history to undeserving college students.

Casting runes?
I prefer chiromancy, tyromancy, spatilomancy, rhapsodomancy...hieroscopy.

Appearing troll-like ourselves?

That's called a flame war in the parlance of the internet. I don't think anyone wins a flame war.

My male shadow self weighs 300 pounds and works at Forbidden Planet. I should know the answers to these questions.

Forbidden Planet, near the Strand bookstore. Your alter barely fits behind the counter.

Plucking stuff out of context - thats called pastiche or something - used as a put down, but the Punks used it and look at Hot Topic now!

need I mention that "Punk" used to be a pejorative?

Artforum Troll I will be your bride if you will say kind things about me. I'm sort of a virgin or at least unicorns sit on my lap if they are wasted. Are you anything like Bluebeard? Is there a secret room in your castle. Who is in there? Larry Zox and R.B. Kitaj?
Yeah and don't treat me like Griselda.

kelli said...

No-where did you call me an orc? I will send my Jungian shadow self after you. He lives over his mom's garage and likes drawing muscular ladies in fetish gear but can never get the shading right.

no-where-man said...

ha no, that was toward artfourm/talkback - riddle me this!

Ok cause I'm a lady. I match my lipstick with my harness, like all fluffy animals and try not to hurt feelings.
Last post from me in this thread. I'm polluting it with geek humor. One more Bocaccio joke and I'll be playing D&D.

no-where-man said...

don't fret about feelings i have been refered to as "dead inside". how many lipstiks do you own... all this and many other questioned perhaps to be answered on some other thread someday.

i don't see laura owens, at all in this...

jeff said...

nope not a trace of laura owens here.
more like a bad will cotton.

zipthwung said...

I thought it was part of the Leipzig school.

Laura owens owes a debt to whoever this paitning owes a debt to. Atmospheric "stained" background and solid shape foreground...they are using the same device.
