this guy's style is like a composite of five currently trendy artists or something
Usually like Zwirner's taste more

This is a perfect sweet painting. I am a really big fan of DR and I loved his show two years ago at Zwiner it doesn't seem that long ago.

kelli said...

It reminds me of the Hunchback of Notre Dame or Two Girls Fat and Thin. It is really sweet.

it reminds me of fantasia in a boring way

Is that Peter Lorre from "M"?

jpegCritic said...

It's pompetus.

The pompetus drips work really well.

This painting is somewhat old, isn't it? I like it for some reason but its back to the whole smartass art. For some reason the gorilla reminds me of George Bush. Was it Richter that had the ads of him holding up his fist in a boxing pose looking all mean? I always kinda liked them.

humm, i guess something struck me about it last night, - to be honest i don't even recall how i got home.. yet some how managed to be posting. odd.
I think it was the way the landscape has both depth and flatness at the same time, - like a video game.
Partial Recall opened last night at Lehmann Maupin - it is really worth checking out one of the best shows i have been to this summer.

Since there seems to be some new people here I just wanted to remind you that I don’t host personal remarks. It is hard for me to moderate so many comments all the time, so please respect the forum and your art colleges.
Thanks.

Old hollywood movies had good set designers - the castles all look the same but they were good castles.

One hallmark of a good castle/stager set is the hint of space "just around the corner," what Lacan might call "the lack" which "needs to be filled."

The "common man" will use the usual tropes - topos - whatever - that are familiar to fill this space. The "avant guard artist" will try to challenge the existing ground through some heuristic device - simple inversion or whatever. This is seen as "magical artistry" by the "common man" but as a "con game" by the "initiate."

I was watching a "true" reneactment of some haunted house last night on TV, I had half a vicodin and some rum and coke, and I was pleasantly entrained by the cardboard characters.

There was the "young family" who had bought "the new house" and were inexplicably caught up in "the unexpected complication"

But how do these stories get told? If one were to re-cast the movie in a trailer park, we have "the parody" and if it is placed in the middle east we have the "political drama."

reminds me of this image

When a heuristic device becomes codified it becomes a "cheat code" and this painting (and the one above) uses one of my favorite cheat codes.

I'm feeling a bit chickenheaded, so Ill leave it to others to explicate the possibly "hybrid" nature of work like this.

I might tie in Lou Lumenik of the NYPost , who rips Oliver Stone's 9-11 movie on the grounds that it turns whatever 9-11 was "about" into a story about something else.

Kalm James I wasn't directing anything at you. It is just my little thing I say every now and again.
I also meant to say 'colleagues' not colleges. I am a terrible speller and it is funny to me because I don't really care to much about art schools but I guess respect those too.

to respond to not getting written about and not existing - from last post -
that sounds very insecure to me,.. I don't want to read about any painters, or artists for that matter, that feel useless and irrelevant if they are not written about.. i will to close my eyes and will them away.

poppy said...

the only reason we talk about painting as being "dead" or less viable is because someone wrote that it was..we just need some better PR people..
I say we start a Painters Militia -
" anyone that does not support painting and uphold it as the primary number one medium of all the arts is charged with crimes against humanity and strung up by the balls."

kelli said...

Good point Painter. If the real estate market were not so insane we would be sitting around talking in person. It' s true that we are colleagues. Poppy can I diss on painting? I gots no balls to string.

That Dix painting was from a story in the papers at the time 1922-23.
At that time in Berlin there was a killer murdering prostitutes. He was fasinated by violence. The guy did 3 tours in WW1 now that's insane.

Its interesting that the movie "M" by Fritz Lang dealing with a serial child killer came out in 1931 just on the cusp of Expressionism - Dada - Verism in Germany.

jeff said...

Oh boy Poppy, are you being sarcastic?
I hope so, didn't the futurist have some kind fascistic manifesto or something in the 20's?

From a web site: www.unknown.nu/futurism

Futurism was an international art movement founded in Italy in 1909. It was (and is) a refreshing contrast to the weepy sentimentalism of Romanticism. The Futurists loved speed, noise, machines, pollution, and cities; they embraced the exciting new world that was then upon them rather than hypocritically enjoying the modern world’s comforts while loudly denouncing the forces that made them possible. Fearing and attacking technology has become almost second nature to many people today; the Futurist manifestos show us an alternative philosophy.

They were all Fascists as well.

Gazinia: Finch used to be awesome. Coagula. That article Apartheid in the Art World said what we all know but don't say: that the art world is racist.
I think his whole issue is insider vs. outsider not men vs. women. Now that he is in he makes provocative remarks to seem contrarian.
Speaking of balls there is a fun party trick to determine male sexual orientation. What part of female anatomy would you like to have for a day? Gay and straight men always say breasts. Bisexual men always say a vagina.
This is way off topic. I like this painting. I really like some of his other work too.

kelli said...

there is a real strangeness to it that keeps it from being magical realist

youth--less said...

What do you call the men who say: none. Honest?

kelli said...

Asexual? A perfect Kinsey 0. I dunno. For some reason this trick always works. Just wait until people at the party are drunk though. Don't pull this stunt at an AA meeting.
You can't go by porn. No group of people seems to watch the porn made for them.

zipthwung said...

On some level Coagula was/is advertising. I think it's level 2, on the wading type level.
On another level it wasa good read.

I like brains, mad cow disease and stuff. Surf n turf. Prions.

This painting reminds me of Aardman, Mr. Bill, Robot Chicken, Stop motion animation in general. Harryhausen, Clash of the titans, Sinbad, King Kong.

kelli said...

Zip for female anatomy are you picking surf n turf?

no not sarcasm pdog - but a joke all the same.. lets leave political correctness for the rest of the world though..

here's a question for Kelly..
what are you if you are not a feminist?

no-where-man said...

Coagula, Artforum they are like parodies of themselves now. Finch taught me a great lesson - how to walk away.

kelli said...

Poppy I am a feminist. I'm a liberal feminist influenced by queer theory. I actually have some history of political activism. I dislike being dictated to by people who have never been to Albany. I mistrust orthodoxy in general especially in art. Thanks for asking though.
My great grandfather went by PopPop because he liked to pop his dentures out as a joke. Are you relatives?
Seriously why do you guys dislike this painting? Look up his other stuff online. There is an oddness which makes it more disturbing than fantastical.

poppy said...

Kelli-Are you an artist? I feel you are more of a History buff than a working artist-
are you both? you refer to you as you and the rest of us as a seperate group that you are not part of in some way.

I'm not related, but i keep having dreams that my teeth are falling out..i don't want to know what that means...

kelli said...

Hi again Poppy. Yes I am a proffessional artist. My computer is in my studio and I like to take breaks and chat. Nice Robot painting on your site by the way. What do you think of this painting? The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Mary Gaitskill always make me cry. Something about misshapen beasts looking for sanctuary. It reminds me of that.

Sven said...

Was that the show with a Bordo painting among others on 26th st? I checked it out just to see her taste, but yeah I was real underwhelmed by it as well.

This painting here is probably the Richter I've liked the least that Ive seen. Parts of it remind me of Alexis Rockman in a bad way. Formally I find the composition extremely boring, the only kicks one gets out of it is the "heuristic device" (nice word) zip mentioned. But like Zip said that is real tired for me too. Color wise I find it lacking(at least in jpeg) and figuratively I find both the ape and the bird predictable and unoriginal.
This piece has absolutely no surprises for me:if someone described it for me in words I'm pretty sure I could have imagined it, and thats always a letdown..

@Poppy Kelli's piece was on this site muuch earlier....shes better than this

Sven said...

I think there was a review of it in timeout that liked it for some reason. Honestly it was so ultra low key that I can only remember the Bordo, and that mainly because it had an 18000$ price tag. There was another group show that was decent in that building, it had two Furnas pieces, probably down by now.

Seeing that kind of work makes me wish somebody would make some cunty, bitchy abstract paintings... so much of that kind of stuff seems real armchair friendly

kelli said...

Cooky like who? The Fishman painting looked good in the Soutine group show.
Cunty:

or

Nobody knows for sure. I go with the Latin

Sven said...

I cant think of anyone, but I'd be interested in formally invested, unironic, "fuck-off" abstract art. Like an honest abstract translation of Renee Ricard. Maybe something vaguely similar to Isa Genzken's recent-ish painting work, except I immediately associate her art with sculptural and conceptual grounding.....her shit is ballsy too (Ilove it), but I'm thinking of something selfish enough in its aesthetics to the point of being offensive to some (I'd find that compelling)

I find Fishman extremely relaxing..unfortunately I didnt think she held up next to Chaim in that show

no-where-man said...

Fishman rocks, and i really respond to this painting.
99% of the summer group shows fell to bits for me. will the bull buck?

zipthwung said...

Fishman is dated in a "I overcooked the brussel sprouts" sort of way. Thats cool, I guess, you know, this is america, and you are entitled to your macrobiotic diet, especially if, or maybe unless you want to punish people with your puritanical or calvinistic or radical feminist hairshirt in the face of the man, whatever your rules are, thing.

Fuck that. I like this painting, and I like the Dead Kennedy's, too.
Who doesnt?

zipthwung said...

Fishman, to me, is like "I overcooked my brussel sprouts, but eat them, they are good for you."

Might as well wear a hairshirt and eat a bland macrobiotic diet to absolve yourself, you know you did it.

I like this painting and I like the Dead Kennedy's.
