I want to like these paintings but:

i want them to be larger...
i want them to have texture...
i want them to contain the life of the landscape they mimic...
i want them to have a soul...

but...

they don't.

When the intellectual component of abstraction is no longer its reaction against dominance, then what is it going to be? This guy is trying out received imagery, reduction and mechanistic accrual, like whats her name the LA artist that traces the stains. It's interesting...

Jackson used to sit and stare for days at the thicket of trees out behind his place. Then when he internalized the rhythm, structure and the complexity, he connected it with things he felt inside. Then he let it flow. Messy like KMA said.

this painting puts me in a really negative space. Or I'm hungover. Or both. WHere's the grey area? Is the meaning of messy.
I dont feel like this person is standing in the way of controll the way the little dutch boy did back in the day.

But I am interested in the snowflakers, as I am calling them. Swoon and Yuken Teruya, off the top of the head. There are tons of stencil-n-wheatpaste people. Then theres Erik Parker who less anal - featured here I think. How about the motherfuckers who scrape vinyl off of glass? Its pathological.

Coke or speed. i could make a lot of work on speed. im doing two cups of sludge and its working for me right now. Its worth the stomach acid and the DNA unzippingly lethal doses of caffeine if I can actually make something.

i dont see how this artist can do it. THe calming repetition - but obsessiveness is something I promided myself I'd never do more than one of at a time, you know?
obsessive work puts the ass in passive in my book.

But stenciling - thats focus, like a lazer stencil, which is what Id do - that or copper plate acid etched silkscreen. Jesus christ this motherfucker makes me want to sandblast skulls in my teeth.

Those with photoshop may have experiemrnted witht he paint bucket tool on a jpg or two - its rad. Theres also a neat little fucntion called "select color range" which makes it neat and tidy. Up the contrast, copy it out on a transparency or two and shoot your silkscreen. I reccoment white on green. Or black on tan.

Im still learning to use my body, the blood brain barrier thing is hard to grasp, but once you do its world of warcfraft 24-7, dig?
But Whats the fucking message?
I cut so you dont have to?

the subject matter seems to be detatched from his interests...its function seems to simply be an excuse to paint.
why then is the subject matter so foregrounded. why does the tree remain a tree? seems like more depth could be achieved with more separation from the real. the reel.

Re: Pulsed

"Psychophysiologist Thomas Mulholland found that after just 30 seconds of watching television the brain begins to produce alpha waves, which indicates torpid (almost comatose) [slow] rates of activity. Alpha brain waves are associated with unfocused, overly receptive states of consciousness. A high frequency alpha waves [sic] does not occur normally when the eyes are open. In fact, Mulholland’s research implies that watching television is neurologically analogous to staring at a blank wall.

Re: Bromides.

He cannot resist the occasional bromide: "Ninety percent of diplomacy is a question of who blinks first."

Teruya's discarded bags which he meticulously transforms into beautiful forms and silhouettes remind us that the simplest act and craft can be transforming--take us back prior the 'adorned'.

Parks has this too, though the disparate elements/styles are feeling a little worn, or are getting too comfortable, and have the appearance of somewhat lounging in their 'unfit'. That's paint! You can do so much with it, that you do. And this sometimes takes one further away from the act.

Marbled endpapers. Sponges right out of the wrapper smelling like cleaning fluid. Sidewalk installation art. Cracked paint roller putty. It leaves me dry. Hacking.

Friend took clases at asl - I cant recommend any one teacher but I think they all have good academic backgrounds (better than Marvel anyways), unike the state school I went to. Hippies. Gotta love em, so they say. Tuition is cheap too. Tcheck out free figure drawing at your alma mater too - then you can draw proportion perspective and pick up a book for the muscles.

Everyone should get a flocking gun. Or a Wacom tablet - i got a little one and its pretty sweet. It scales up your drawing just like using a stick. And the line weight changes with pressure - 512 is plenty good. best 100 bucks I ever spent.
Im a little better than keith haring. AEIOU and sometimes Y.

I always bow-down to the frisket-people.

And I go ga-ga over frisket-fanbrush-people.

Simply gaa-gaa.

Masterful, well-planned, constrained. But I hope such constraint and control doesn't amount to a false sense of maturity. I'd like to see more range in the future.
