I saw this. It looked like collaged paper painted over with ge medium. But I didnt look into it. It reminds me of the Basquiats I see being hawked - the ones with color photocopies with acrylic medium over them - or whatever. Second rate if you ask me.

But these paintings are conceptual in a way I dont get - like maybe she blew up old photos and then painted over them? I find this to be pretty hard - becasue its hard to remember what you painted over when you do that, so you lose detail.

When I was littel someone showed me how to make slides by applying gel medium to a magazine picture and then peeling away the paper so the ink stayed on the medium.

I made darth vaders head.

Not so into pools - you have to keep them clean, for one.

I saw a picture like this in a friends house - it must be a reference to some art historical work?

This looks suspiciously like a student in my school's work-- both in subject matter and execution. It's so hard to still be original nowadays.

These paintings are voyeuristic. Who is the voyer?

Isca Greenfield-Sanders takes a series of vintage fifties/sixties beach vacation slides she found at a yard sale, manipulates them in Photoshop, prints the reconfigurations on rice paper, and further augments them with oil paints and watercolors. From:artbuisness.com

Banksy's in LA...

The show is titled “Barely Legal.” Will there be dancing girls?

Although it’s called “Barely Legal,” there’s actually very little nudity in the show; it just seemed like a good name to bring in the punters. I mean, porn is a lot more popular than art, right? Someone once said modern art is what happened when people stopped looking at naked women and thought they had a better idea, and I’ve never had a better idea.

OK I have been lurking here for about six months and I have decided to comment today. Zip - your digressions are sometimes amusing and other times very tiresome. Sometimes I vow to stop reading this because you people are mostly kind of mean. But then I have to go and look again.

I haven't seen any work on here that has moved me since a few months ago. It's all just "OK." Nothing that makes me angry and jealous that I did not make it myself. (That's how I know when I really like something.)

This pool image is ok - I like the shape of the diver as well as the pool ladder. But if you look at this artist's other work they get really boring, especially all the families under the picnic umbrellas. Some different subject matter would be nice.

Zip I see your point with the nepotism posts but back off Cecily. Her dad is British and sort of an academic and she waitressed and didn't show until she was 28. Besides family money helps more people than family connections.

Im not dissing cecily- nor Isca really. Its great they make work. But uh
flyover says its mean here and then says:
"I haven't seen any work on here that has moved me since a few months ago"

which isnt really mean but its actually more annoying than a real (mean) oppinion.
But didnt we all get MFA's to weaponize our artistic selves? Is it not assumed that all of these artists have sufficient education to withstand the slings and arrows of public oppinion?
If not, (flyover) go hit your makiwara board some more.

I think isca is "safe" and that probably theres is pressure to make "accomplished" work that usually only an established artistic reputation or doctoral degree would have.
(Rauschenburg's prints).

Or maybe its the desire to make finished beautifull objects - like a Cornell box - poetic, with doobied ends.

I find my tastes run less towards Cornell Boxes (I hate sentimentality, floatsam, and jetsom) and more towards gun blueing, attack aircraft and gore.

This may put me in an unsophistocated place, so I am trying to leaven that with Art and Language so as to appear a bit less of a philistine.

I come from a land of activists driving volvos clothed in alpacca and shod in mucklucks, spouting Marxist drivel and lamenting the fall of Allenede's Bannana Republic, the torture of peasants, and the Gap in arms dealing. Very few pools, but lots of gardening.

But this work comes from another place, one more attuned to Vogue - one that Cecily inhabits, and that I, an interloper, huff and puff at.
Thick as a brick. Mortar.

her work occupies a netherworld neither polished enough, nor raw enough-I don't feel any real compulsion here to be an artist-just ran across(completely haphazardly)a,yes,Hockney, and mytemporary piscineophobia went away-Air was there-

originality is on very few artists minds,
What should be said is it's very hard to see an original picture these days..
this is like avery and porter, I like those guys but i don't like this. Does anyone give a shit about creating a picture that causes a reaction? I believe this is still possible without having to do something remarkable with paint - like magically turn it into another form of matter or make it float in mid-air.

did anyone mention this article yet?

sounds like some people just like paintings of pools that help them Remember the complex and ambiguous waythere past & there wives were.

Timothys work in contrast does make Isca's pop not prop it up.

Fairfield Porter meets Alex Katz. Her work is somehow refreshing. I think it is her use of direct imagery paired with primary colors. If that makes sense...

If I'm 24 should I give up all hope?

hey never give up, always be young and pretty..

But really, why give up? If you're in the right place there will always be people that are happy with O.K. You can do it!

kelli said...

Poppy I don't know if you live in New York but there is a bagel chain here called Hot and Crusty. I've always liked hot and crusty more than young and pretty.

Tatiana said...

well, not ALL of us have our MFA's.
i am just a overopinionated 20yearold looking at it all from across the ocean.
(gettin a bfa. sloowly!)

jpegCritic said...

she's hot.

poppy said...

I myself actually prefer if it is hot underneath with a thin layer crusting the surface, like gravy, and it smells like dog shit.. I'd spread that on my bagel anyday.

Unknown said...

I don't have an MFA yet, so I count as nothing. And sadly I'm not pretty.
Lets all wallow in ourselves!

jpegCritic said...

that's hot cathy.

Unknown said...

I've nearly got an MFA - but what do I know? I'm quite simple minded when it comes to art - but I do know that I'm not a fan of Inca's work. Once I leave this page I'll forget about her work because I find it quite bland. But that's my personal opinion - I'm more inclined to gratuitous images of people vomiting than random beach/pool images - but that's really to do with my immature ways.

Also someone said her show was called Barely Legal - she stole that title from The Strokes which wasn't nice - but hey I'm referencing them for my next series of paintings so I'm not one to judge.

PS i think you're brill zipthwung - those links of yours are pretty interesting.
