Dude,

I was just reading a summary of kristeva's post-freudian theory of "abjection" which seems relevantt her, if only to point out that I can read.

When aphasia strikes, and one tires of interpreting the bookleafed anamorphosis, the thin veneer we call culture - the drama masking the absurdity of a meaningless universe? The play's the thing!

I look forward to the day that Gavin Brown's is a coffee shop, called Adorno's or something. But not a drop to drink.

BB, you're losing it.

i don't know, it is hard to refute a a upside down police car disco

dubz said...

i was just teasing you, bb. you're totally sane-ish.

these are pretty decent paintings, but kind of formulaic... with the right amount of this and that, graphic elements, etc. could do w/o the drips and intestines and symbols for painterly things. i'm a sucker for black paint, but here it feels like it's just covering stuff up. maybe that's the point?

competent, predictable. How much shit is there to play with, in this genre of walking in the footsteps of Kippenberger, Oehlen and Polke, 20-30 years after the fact...

no surprises

I think I've had some Aphasia -- kind of
like a cross between Train Wreck and Purple Haze.
It's a Sativa, no?

in france they still flip police cars for real.

no-where-man said...

agreed on the Whitney, close-up THIS cop car also has a DISCO!

He should stick to upside down police car club lighting. The paintings I saw seem like I've seen better versions elsewhere.

So it's official. Sweeney should do an upside down stealth fighter washing machine. Right? Installation: Mas. Painting: No mas.

Im watching another spencer, spencer Tunic. He was just talking about being rude, by way of talking through the rejection he gets when soliciting for nude models. "Who's rude? He asks.

These days no one is rude, or nude. There's nothing to be offended by.

if I want to eat a candy bar in front of a homeless man, I'm secure in the knowledge that they could probably get a facimile of the very same Kit Kat bar I'm eating. Or Mounds, or Babe Ruth. Whatever. Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't.

Notice on the first painting it says Boone, backwards. Thats like the EDUN brand of clothing, and its also a reference to THE SHINING, in a way.

In conclusion, this painting looks young - without knowing the age of the painter, just the grad date, i'd say 25-26. Just young enough to have cleared the amniotic fluid from one's ears, but not so soon that you don't want to get back in.

What tangled webs we weave.

I agree with you, zip, but without your panache. Young. That's it. Young.

"Painting is a rejection of the entropic time of bars and clubs."

so at the opening the gallery lights were off and the disco and cop lights on.

I was reading Kuspit's penny dreadfull cliffhanger on artNET dot com- its weird in several ways - here are my hypotheses, and it does relate, I'm just not going to bore myself with trying to. Read the article as if it was addressed to you and you alone - like a paranoid schizophrenic. I say that because otherwise it will bore you like a 120 year old amontolado with a bad cork or something.

Kuspit uses references - you can too.

Augean Stables - I am fond of the Augean Stables, possibly because of latent coprophillia, but more probably because I live in one.

Gordian knots are cool if you transpose your favorite worm-like parasite in place of the hackneyed thread of Ariadne or whatever.

See - theres another web reference. Its amazing.

Little miss muffet, tuffet, curds, whey, itsy bitsy spider, end of story.

1) Kuspit is all about soul - and he's making a bid for relevancy. Is he palying Jazz fusion to the ponytail set? No. Its more classical, but who's the audience? ME of course, I allways knew Guernica was an elaborate doodle, and I've said as much. I don't think I'm the first to attack Picasso, but its like the paralell development of Eastern and Western philosophy in that I am constantly being afirmed when I read stuff. One of my quirks is that i like praise from authority figures, so it would be cool if Kuspit would recognize my genius one day. Maybe by tracing the lineage of large target snipers.

2) These painting are about the system and spencer baby is making a bid for relevant currency.

3) Culltural Currency is like electricity only it buys stuff instead of burning murderers to death. Ride the lightning.

I thought it said NOOB too at first. Or Boo-Ze.

Language can be like croquet if you let it. Otherwise the queen gets to stack up the skull pyramid. man is the medium and stuff. Punishment enough.

wade seemed to have rescinded his tupperware comment; which I lament, because of his perfect analogy to psychoanalysis.... which is not to say that shit nor tupperware nor psycoanalysis can't be sexy at times (Kristeva was probably hot in her Lacanian days) Shit-talkin' tupperware can even be relevant, given the context... The image quite evocative. Bravo, wade.

The 'mother of us all' ...all spray paint and acrylic....
I'd buy em. Especially at a party. They're decent paintings!

Though this barry mcgeeian vogue of motor vehicles in gallery spaces can be quite annoying (the 'other' shit-in-tupperware genre), this disco-police-car thing seems that it would be quite satisfying. It's prob just me. It seems refreshing, even though it may be a one-liner.

Zipthwung, your comments are fusion jazz. Your 'poetical' observations are a big skullet-style ponytail. But I grok you, dude. Why bore yourself when you can bore so many other people? Your post looks like a 16-year old in a 44-year old's body. Or is it the other way around? Am I being clever or just spouting bad free-verse? Either way, My intent is to insult. Trust me.

Professor Mouth said...

The police care is a dumbass one-liner. You can tell by how many people on this site immediately applauded rather than engage the paintings. The paintings look pretty good. What is it with Gavin Brown parking cars in his gallery all the time?

Professor Mouth said...

Police CAR.

something happend at an opening before that to make it pop.. i can't remember what now.

To be the true wild man. You can be a hard partier--which is what Spencer seems to be representing. Or you can speak truth to power. Tim Miller comes to mind. Some people do both and they are legends. Lenny Bruce

Zip does just fine. Still workin on that new ID? How bout Herbie Han_cock?

I guess when I see work like this Im like - fuck man, at least hes painting and not making videos or doing perf art. Not that Im hating on either one, but whatever.
