i need a urine sample. Or a full blood workup. Has anyone evhad a neurological exam? I read about those. Im sure im drinking too much coffee.

This kind of work is made up of a lot of little marks, making it into a whole. SO it looks like work but really its just a pasttime. Time past in pleasure. As a calvinist puritan that shit doesnt fly. As a red blooded americac that grain rubs me the wrong way.

Upstairs at the Met in the permanent collection of modernist stuff. Make a salad. Use basalmic vinaigrette if you want or piss on the painting. Ash in your pigment. SHit in your medium. The collectors wont smell it, the smell of money is too pungent and the reek of hubris masks the residuals.

Leipzig oh Leipzig, meet me in the park like a dog in heat.

Too bad about Baudrillard:

You seduce yourself by being absent, by being no more than a mirror for the other who is unaware - as with Kierkegard's mirror, hanging on the opposite wall: The young girl doesn't think of it, but the mirror does. You seduce yourself into the other's destiny, the double of his path, which, for him, has meaning, but when repeated, does not. Its as if someone behind him knew that he was going nowhere - it is in some way robbing him of his objective: seducing him. The cunning demon of seduction slips between him and himself, between you and him. This is so powerful that people can often sense they are being followed, through some sort of intuition that something has penetrated their space, altering its curvature - a feeling of being reflected without knowing it.

Too much thinking by an artist can kill a painting, even a really big painting. It's OK to be aware of your influences and your contemporaries, but not while doing the painting. Put those mentors aside in the studio and just paint with your own voice. Otherwise the truth will not be there, even if you try to literally spell it out.

Second rule. Don't write wood. A lot of trainee are so anxious to get off the phone they just steamroll the guy into getting the press pack so they can hang up. Then I call in a month and say, Hi, you spoke to a junior associate of mine last month. The guy's like, Yeah, I'm not interested. Bye. That's a shitty lead. It's fucking wood. The info we send is bullshit. The important part of the call is telling them you have that one great idea, and that a broker is going to call them back in a month. This shows that we don't just fire a million recos a day. We tell them we have six or seven great ideas a year! They don't want to think you're pitching them something you read in the journal this morning. Get it? No wood.

It's like a jungle sometimes
It makes me wonder how I keep from goin' under

This is the kind of painting I like--the kind of painting I do.

This one is Not as good as Cecily Brown or Joan Mitchell, but I wouldnt say its not in the painter's own voice.

Why now, why Boone?

zipthwung said...

yeah its interesting you can cry Saatchi like the last painting. Or you can cry Leipzig, but in the end theres got to be a zeitgeist right?

art may be fashion right now, but if no one is famous in the future there will be no future? Was there any future anyways? Emporer has a closet full of italian suits, ball gowns and ironic t-shirts. One off's from the Top Designers.

Boone is the Chairman Mao somehow - and maybe Gagosian is Pol Pot. not sure why. who cares why its cheerleading.

What im more concerned with is did the US use tac nukes in nam? it would make a sexy story.

When I see, or when I appear to see semiabstract images I take them in in a semiabstract way. And that might sound strange, because it is. Things aren't semi. They are!
All things are whole. Take, for example, the apple. The apple is a whole. When you cut the apple in half what do you have? Half an apple?
Well, no! And yes! Half is in the dictionary but has no direct relation to an apple because an apple is not a half. It is a whole. So when we put half infront of the apple the other half, well, is still behind it, right! ? And that's the secret of the half the whole and the semi coming at you at a colon's pace.
Thought I'd mention that!
Next time the tree in relation to the apple. Zip you can bring in the worm, if you like.

working girl, i once was asked in a seminar - or amybe an essay - if there can be a "private language"

The importance of the private language argument derives from its centrality in debates about the nature of language.

One compelling theory about language has it that words map to ideas, concepts or representations in each person's mind. On this account, the concepts in my head are distinct from the concepts in your head. But I can match my concepts to a word in our common language, and then speak the word. You then match the word to a concept in your mind. So our concepts in effect form a private language which we translate into our common language and so share. This account is found for example in An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, and more recently in Jerry Fodor's Language of thought theory.

Wittgenstein's argument seeks to show that this sort of account is incoherent.

If the idea of a private language is incoherent, then it would follow that all language is essentially public: that language is at its core a social phenomenon. This would have profound implications for other areas of philosophical study. For instance, if one cannot have a private language, it might not make any sense to talk of private sensations such as qualia; nor might it make sense to talk of a word as referring to a concept, where a concept is understood to be a private mental representation.

So no, im just a worm in the compost heap.

zipthwung said...

n order to tell if someone understands a word or phrase, one looks to behaviour. If someone were to behave as if they understood a language which no-one else can make sense of, we might call this an example of a private language.[2] It is not sufficient here, however, for the language to simply be one that has not yet been translated. In order to count as a private language in Wittgenstein's sense, it must be in principle incapable of translation into an ordinary language - if for example it were to describe those inner experiences supposed to be inaccessible to others.[3] The private language being considered is not simply a language such that there is only one speaker, but a language that in principle can only be understood by one person. For example, the last speaker of a dying language would not be speaking a private language, since the language remains in principle learnable. A private language must be unlearnable and untranslatable, and yet it must appear that the speaker is able to make sense of it.

that forms once thought of as free
begin to express the forces, structure

it's painting 101. Rule no.1... close observation.

I suppose it's no small achievement that an not so well known artist older than 40 can have a solo show in NY.

The kids are alright.

The phrase 'mature painting' makes me chuckle.

I might check on this painting today in person if i have time...as of now I'm pretty confused as to the boone equation...
tryin not to be gossipy but this work doesnt yell hot chelsea bluechip,(not sayin it has to{more power to him})but I'm seeing more mitchell, johns and even kandinsky in it..as opposed to maybe cecily brown...wonder if there is a conceptual or "now" twist to them in person

Stella artois is the Belgian Budweiser, so a belgian told me. I believe that fact illuminates the Leipzig branding and the Boone placement.

Are you sure conceptual is now? now? now? It looks to me like now has turned the corner.

Let 10,000 Young Artists Bloom
By CAROL VOGEL

Let a thousand galleries (and paintings) bloom south of Chelsea
by Jerry Saltz

Let a thousand flowers bloom is a common misquotation of Chairman Mao Zedong's "Let a hundred flowers bloom; let a hundred schools of thought contend". This slogan was used during the period of approximately six weeks in the summer of 1957 when the Chinese intelligentsia were invited to criticize the political system then obtaining in Communist China.

zipthwungIt is sometimes suggested that the initiative was a deliberate attempt to flush out dissidents by encouraging them to show themselves as critical of the regime. Whether or not it was a deliberate trap isn't clear but it is the case that many of those who put forward views that were unwelcome to Mao were executed.

A lot of younger people's work seems to have this interest in 'funny space' and 'meaning': painting as some kind of bridge. It's different from before where it was all symbolic and, well, primitive. But, in a color reality, we are not talking about ducks, trees, houses, or horses. Is it about jotting down a different sort of metapmphosis, or just wet paint at the end of the springboard?
SPLASH!

Is it about wet paint and wet paint fetishits or is it about jotting down a different sort of metapmphosis - wet paint as a revolutionary weapon?
