I actually kinda liked this show. He was using so many crappy arts + craftsy elements (not too apparent in this one) but still managed to walk out with his dignity unscathed. There were a whoole lot of afterschool care/sunday painter musings flying around

how was your dignity after musing about after school care/sunday painters?

I lost that sleeping my way to the top years ago.duh

The systemizer looks at your tie and notices the fivefold symmetry in the pattern; the empathizer instead sees soup stains that indicate your low regard for personal appearance. Engineers, as you may have noticed, are more likely to wear stained ties than, say, their business executive bosses, let alone the salesmen and politicians of this world. In fact, engineers are probably the largest single group having systemizing casts of mind.

What a Yolk! man I got eggs, bu tno nest egg, know what I mean? Gotta get a body of work, throw some glue together. Look at Jesse Berkowetz Matt Bua they use hot melt and the new yorker says they have a horror vaccui, which os one of my faves - love staring at the void. Idle hands do the devils work, give the devil his due.

yeah, i see what your talking about,..not many examples of work by artists,..notice that the website is kinda screwy? or is it just my computer?

Elliott- nice work. Wish I could see the show. Congrats!

poppy said...

bb, I see the similarities. noticed it with Daniel Hesidence's work too.
Looking at earlier stuff was reminded of Antoni Tapies with all the material exploration. I'm a fan of this approach but agree that it could potentially get out of hand and get passed off easily. but I liked looking at at the 2 that you mentioned.

The work incorporates painting, photography, collage, sculpture, performance, upholstery... (am I forgetting something...?) without being too jumbled, scattered, or suffering from dilletantism. THings hang from the ceiling, sit on the floor and lean against the wall, and a few pieces hang on the wall and present themsleves straight-on as painitings. THe show is totally ecclectic and together & masterfull at the same time. Elliott deploys each of these construction techniques with equal aplomb, managing to be loose & freewheeling and coherent & cohesive at the same time. He has been gathering steam in this mulit-disciplinary collage approach for several years now, which makes seeing the formidable, lusciously impastoed paintings, (the autonomous rectangles that hang on the wall,) all the more delicious. Anyone interested in painting and/or any of the above mentioned disciplines should go see this show in person. This is my opinion....

nwm, checked him out before but followed your link again. I like that guy.. looks fun to do and to generate ideas for that work is probably fun also. Its seems like the type of thing you might look around the room to see if your friends or peers are digging it then you can admit you like it too.. Just kiddin .. Actually I like the play back and forth between representation, flat and material exporation. Makes me want to get a little more dynamic in my own stuff or screw around more.

I see the influence of Brice Marden.

Interesting to see what the 3d artist does when he goes 2d. I could look at this for a long time.

zipthwung said...

desert island painter - you forgot love, the best medium of all.

thats what keeps you colors clean and your brushes supple.

poppy said...

the question now is - if a painter hates himself can he make a lovely painting?

Sven said...

closeuup did you see it in person? funny to mention brice, that really threw me for a second, till I glanced again at the jpeg; the whole gallery in person gives a very different vibe...An innocent Dionysian appeal(that possible?) in contrast to marden's rather apollonian ruminations. Holy shit did that sound pretentious

supple brushes?Zip your getting me excited

Sven said...

Poppy wheres that question coming from? Self hate is the surest way to glory

Remember how stars are, they run out of gas, they become denser, the gas runs out until you get this thing that is very solid…

I haven't made up my mind about this painting, I don't think it's working with the self hate ingredient. Maybe a little dessert isle treat, pineapple something like that. The paper thing, that big one, looks, loosely, interesting.
Funny isn't, how funny is. Sometime last night someone broke in and took Spring. Wierd. This afternoon there it was on the doorstep, with a note, I couldn't resist. Who could?
Icecream.

Verse 1:
Yeah, said it's all right
I won't forget
All the times I've waited patiently for you
And you'll do just what you choose to do
And I will be alone again tonight my dear

Verse 2:
Yeah, I heard a funny thing
Somebody said to me
You know that I could be in love with almost everyone
I think that people are
The greatest fun
And I will be alone again tonight my dear

the question came up when I read that love was the best medium of all,..which sounded funny. so I thought, what of hate? Interesting that this was a topic at your school Scab,.If you hate yourself does this mean you've given up on everything else? Damn I'm getting depressed now:0

Its the at birth of tragedy, close to madness, that we find the threads buried in painterly gobs of flayed and melted flesh.

Self love is necessary to overcome the slave mentality. Hate is necessary to overcome the ubermench. TO exit between is to be a halbermench, weilding the hammer of donder und blitzen in a meatstorm.

A vile smell, like tasting death
Dead bodies, dying and wounded
Litter the city streets
Shattered glass, bits of clothing and human deceit
Dying terror
Bloods cheap, its everywhere
Mandatory suicide, massacre on the front line

cookie- I realize the vibe of the whole show is more about the joy of jerryrigging.

But this painting looks to be a lot about the joy of snaking a bunch of long lines around a canvas--which reminded me of brice.

This EH plays with the 2D-3D in a delightful way. Brice sticks close with the 2D in his stoic way.

I think that French guy who was talking about ant-market said anywhere there is play, there is anti-market.

Leaving the bottom right corner bare is a device Ive seen lately in lots of paintings-Sillman & White do it. Well, obviously even Renoir did it. But I always like it.

As for self love, dont let yr palms go hairy.

pinch me im irish--well very little but a tiny bit. We are all a slag heap of everything and the kitch-en sink/sunk.

Sven said...

I'm all for newagey positivity but anyone who doesnt think that self-hate can lead to creativity only has to look at every artist who killed themself...
and that koonsian spiel about loving the lie starts to grate if you think it about too long.
That being said I dont see how that convo relates to this work

youth--less said...

like 2 skeins of yarn the discussion of this painting and the previous discussion about david lynch and transcendental meditation are tangling around each other.

I thought DL explained it very well in the audio clip. Motivation can be via negative means, but to create, you need inspiration. He thinks that you can meditate and reach that state in a dependable way. So you dont have to wait for the lightening. (Or maybe you do have to wait. Not sure.) But having to be creative in a commercial environment is a bitch, so excuse him if he doesnt want to be an alcoholic. Or a suicide.

Sven said...

convo=conversation
I'd try trancendental meditation, except for the fact that a session costs a few Gs

I have a question how do you pronounce ShYraan?
The rest is down pat but the shirun well when it comes to that the legs fold up and down like they were landing gear, with my backside bouncing round, until there's this nose dive where finally the limbs run out like limp snakes, much like the painting above. Is that the way it's meant to go. if so, how are you meant to get any painting done? Or is it just my shuiryann?

A shaky pilot.

poppy said...

the loving yourself convo only relates to this work as far as the thread is concerned. To make this work you need to love yourself and have a supple brush or touch. I think you will find that in a Zip post.

Hundley is one who is having fun, who has the legs to do so, and can achieve the satisfaction of that. The work, body of it, looks to fluctuate between the different interpretations of space, and the marks that make it, or structures that hide it, which present choices gigantuan.
What is the depreciating stratagorum?
The balance?
The 'Who knows'!
Hundley doesn't know, but does it. Can he do it when he knows?
At a certain point there is a need to stop skirting, or skirt some more. I guess that can be interpreted as love & the self, and we can skim-take it, ingrate it, or not.

youth--less said...

In the fluctuating and skirting, there seems to be a lot uncovered. To me it seems very generous thus remarkable.

The form in the back looks like one of Cezanne's mountains.

Anyone go for the free pasta at zwirner? Body of christ? Feel the love, the passion, the humanity. feel it and weep. then buy somethng, something impressive. you got the cash. You got the time. Take it to the limit, feel the heat from the eternal flame, you are a chariot, a firey chariot -are you not speeding along like a fiery and matchless troika? Me too.

Im feeling nostalgia for the mud.
army greens, green browns, dark indeterminate greys - the realm beyond the primaries, the secondaries, and even the tertiaries - the whole range of infinitude beyond the discernible spectrum.

My eye is fearsome. Painted the second coat on this wall - the cheap primer is pretty translucent even if you lay it on drip-thick.

But two layers of the orange and POW! it really sings. ONe note of pure speckled conch. DOesnt matter that the trumpeter is jaded - air doesnt care. Its heat from a can.

my mantra is HEY BOY DON'T YA LIE ON THE TRACK-A-LACK-AH

let us read from "the birth of tragedy" by Neitzche.

poppy said...

its weird how this conversation has turned to love thyself / make good art. I think If you are able to sit in one spot for while and then come back and sit in the same spot again for another while you can probably make a good painting.

poppy said...

I forgot the recipe for authentic Art,...For this you must be a God loving Christian.

zipthwung said...

decorative kitch is wrong. Goldleaf is wrong. Sentimentality, like treacly Hallmark cards, is wrong.
Nostalgia for anything is weak. Sparta threw its deformed off the cliff. We who hate money use iron coins in one, two and thousand pound weights around our necks.

String, popsicle sticks, toothpicks, straws, cup, yarn, dog fur, sand, dust, one of these materials doesn't belong.

The introduction of noise to music - i think it might be neitzchean, but I only read to update my skillset, and the NY Post, so i dont know.

Im class conscious and not afraid to blow it. Red wine on the white carpets! WHite wine with red meat! Fill the wineglass full! Serve the beer cold and the wine cooler!
Walk to work! Eat bad szechuan style "chinese" food and get food poisoning! Work at a job that requires no management skills! Work at a job that is only a mantra to boredom! Aspire to smear feces on the wall of the collective madhouse! Skate on bannana peels over the linoleum floors of nurse ratchets infinite labarynth! Cut up your work into squares and sell it for the walls of the company mind.
Fill the hive with madness! Market the wave. Spread the gravy!

Art is a commodity for fetishists!

I liked this painting. kinda retardo crumminess but it works IMHO. I would be willing to be that dude is totally over_it and hacking away. thats when you start getting somewhere though.

ad3pt said...

cause none of this is real anyways. we dont even exist. its a dream man. its all a dream. just like when you sleep your dreaming and you wake up it your like, 'damn that was a dream?', thats how it is now. when you start incorporating that into your perception of the world, the matrix starts bending in your favor. yeah mon.

ad3pt said...

all this art, we got to be crazy to even take a second of it seriously. even our own practice. getting all wrapped up in this total nothingness. this is nothing! all of it - its nothing! laugh at it. laugh at those who cringe in their seriousness of it!

start playing

So i heard it was a re-performance of a show at 303 many a moon ago and we were sitting in a reconstruction of the gallery.

hotness, followed it up with a visit to CVZ Contemporary Its a pretty dope scene, i respect the kid for getting his own thing going.

Yeah poppy and this other little thing. Then!
You are in. U've won the prize, your're in.

As closeuup says, you get so excited that you start seeing things, seeing a bit history, a fragment of it, an old artist:
the smaller the fragment the greater the artist the ticky-er the heart beats, the greater the thought, the thought, that what is being done shouldn't be shah..... there is no better under the sun, unless zip says so. U.n.l.e.s.s. z.i.p. s.a.y.s spaghettiiiii!
And the trick is, and no small trick, is to be able to undilute yourself, sit or stand in front of that for time enough... boom bhah, boom bhah...
All sorts of emotions come up. The more the merrier, the many the hum. The ho-hum the love,
the song.

Anyway enjoy your studio time.

poppy said...

I see you enjoy speaking in tongues too. Thanks for the encouragement. And I do enjoy my studio time, Life is a mystery, Paintings not, it can look that way bing bang boom lalalalala a square.

I want paintings to be undone. enternal question marks. doubtful and showing moments of aged scrutiny. it gets bland when its slicked out, sleek and finished. things like that belong on the wall at Morimoto.

this dream, this illusion, this reflection on the 'cave-wall' is so much fun, such an adventure.

your in your studio and making your work. and your completely agonizing over the next step, what to do next. wheres the solution? fuck it and play. be disattached and uncommittal about it. thats when the fun begins.

easier said than done.

sometimes you maybe have to let the mystery show you what it wants to.

zipthwung said...

Regular nine to five hours. Thats a good idea. Then you can predict when the day will end. WHat if the day never ends? What if its all day all the time?

A regular paycheck. thats pretty cool. No split shifts - thats illegal, by the way.

One thing about art training is you can get lines straight and spacing even. At least thats what I tell myself.

Stream of consciousness, thats all i am. you can be what you want.

nice. much more interesting than that hack Brice Marden!

Elliot is kind of like a miracle. His work is sublime. This piece in particular is compelling and beautiful. I'm so inspired by the painterly way he's expressing himself here. great color, great painting. It was an awesome show and deserves tons of accolades.
