Cracking me up and I usually don't even crack a smile. Reminds me of the Ad Reinhardt cartoons and the comic like paintings Jim Torok has been making since he stopped the portraits.

I feel like I'm playing Operation. I don't want to touch it because it's clever and funny. But, it gives me some of the same art nausea it's trying to quell. It's hilarious, but I still feel the pain that would be illustrated in a postmodernism mortician's diary.

that gallery Dam Stuhltrager should make the website easier to navigate, only 1 work (this one) was presented and it doesn't interest me enough to go so far as google more.

Dear Painter, what do you think of posting the work of Damien Cadio at grimm/rosenfeld. unfortunately the show is in munich, just thought I'd mention it anyways.

Yeah this gives me hives. Its didactic without offereing anything. Reinhardt gave us some sense of what people thought history was at the time and how history was taught even when I was in school- im sure its changed. Reinhardts humor is "of the time: in a way though.

This image pairs (literary) "movements" with effects.

THe effects are what make this painting "clever".
That and the chart part, which really dissects the equation. But remember - Kelli hates the script!

Clever being a perjorative term, like "narrative".

Take for example "ball Breaking Feminist art" - thats a cliche.

Right there I could be sooooo much funnier.

"Slipped disk suceptibility of earth art".

Should read "small plane john chamberlain, pollock , its a downward spiral"

hahhahahahahahahah!
I laugh at own joke.

why not just write it out?
because we HAVE to READ it. Aye theres the rub.

The art world is divided up into two camps, those who read and those who dont.

Of those, there are those who joke and those who lack a sense of humor.

Of those there are those who want something and those that have everything they ever wanted in life and fuck you.

Of those there are the ones who want you to have the same thing and those that want you to fuck off and die so they can get some sleep.

Of those there are the us and there are the them.

I'm in full-tilt opposition to the use of words in paintings because it requires the language processing part of the brain to get involved in the viewing experience. If you've got something to say with words, pleease write a book. Or a poem. Or a comic. But leave painting alone. Thank you.

That's hot. Personally, I like the mind numbing effects of cenepctual art.... meaning.... you know.

zipthwug, relax, it is ok to laugh at the work. I know you can be so much funnier, we all do. You don't have to be. It's ok to laugh at, and enjoy the work of others. You don't have to laugh at yourself.

Things are not so black and white. Us them. Us, The Others. You know - there is a part of all of us that want people to fuck off, and there are also parts of us, that want to fuck, and be fucked.

That can be a scarey thing to accept... but do not fear the shades of grey, for they can set us free....

Now let us just hope, The Others, set Kate, Sawyer and Jack free. Henry Ben Gale is fucking scarey.

Loren Munk is cool.

He's got a great little blurb up at Stuhltrager.

"When Science and Spirituality Collide, Art Sees
For eons the mystics and shaman have been saying it; ours is only one small universe of many, there are untold levels of existence within a grain of sand, obscure forces, unperceived control our “reality”. Since the “Age of Enlightenment” we have dismissed these ideas as fantasies of poetic illusion, putting our faith in “science,” supposedly a more empirical revealer of truth. As science has evolved with particle physics and string theory, the postulates put forward by our most advanced physicists seem to echo the koans of the visionaries.

Art is the nexus between science and the metaphysical. Those questions asked of art by the philosophers about the essence of beauty, its relevance to life and the understanding of vision, can be perhaps not answered, but at least diagramed and clarified through paint.

If, as Ad Reinhardt quipped “art is art, everything else is everything else”, it is appropriate for its rational examination that one should use art as the vehicle. The art universe is vast, and like our own universe 90% is composed of “dark matter.” This body of work is a humble beginning in seeking understanding and illumination of the art cultural universe, a study of the energy that is art, and the connections and relationships that bind it together and impel it into the future.
- Loren Munk (08/06)"

It reminds me of a Modern Painters from a few years back that had some work of Keith Tyson. He does wacked off stuff like this.

For me this "collage" says it all---says it all about artists who won't get off their ass and make art. I remember a dancer once said to me, "Well, you know, dance is dead."
I said to her, "Thank God YOU are not dancing."
So I rate it an A minus.

Say what you will, he's damn good
at hand-lettering Bodoni, not to mention Univers.
I'd hire him.

Is this rentable? For those planning upon having
a dinner parties with people they don't care a lick
about.... they could stare at this the whole time.
And smile.

t's not clever 'enough' for you guys?
geez you're a tough crowd. ja hear this one:
A guy walks into a bar....
oh i for got.
Anyway, i like.
I think there's a 'populist' ethos
slash vernacular that stands as
an alternative to the 'populist'
'fucked-up-the-ass' vernacular
of grafitti based art.

He's like tal R with a design sense, no?

Even still, while the typographical work
is loads more interesting than the
earlier shit, i don't know if this current stuff has
much lifespan. How much one can rag (-e)
against the machine depends upon how large
one's stash of jokes? Though i like this work,
dunno if i have much hope. Still, there's cattelan.
He's kinda funny.
So the art world tells me.

Ok, jpeg if you wont complete the joke, I will!
There's a guy on the subway, wishes he was at the bar but missed the Wednesday deal. He recognizes some guy with his tongue hanging out on the way home. Remembers a won-ton wrapper ad he discarded in Chinatown, and it all comes back.
The Question: Albert, he says, when does NY stop by this train?

I think I told you this before zip--fritjof lives down the street from me, and he has a personalized licence plate on his car that says TAO75. I find that funnier than this painting, and more high/low

john waters: I've always said that my work in art galleries is about the terrible depression normal people must feel every day when they wake up and realize they're not in show business! Somebody said, 'That's the snottiest thing you've ever said!' I said, 'I don't mean that to be snotty--I think it's just true.' There is a certain depression when they look in the mirror and realize that there are no paparazzi out front

This painting flows in a good way, if you like flowing, and who doesnt?

Go with it! Rally the troops. Get the people in a row. Run em up and put guns in their hands. Eat some cherry pie. Chop down a tree. Swim a river. Dont and say you did! You win!

Get Sonic Youth to write the soundtrack (go to the WFMU record fair you might see Thurston Moore!). Or Black Dice (those chimps are so creative!). Maybe you like Dashboard Confesional and just cant get into the rougher emo-core like Fugazi. Get a Costume designer! Be Karen O. (Skritch Scritch!) Loud Quiet Loud the recipe is totally allowed! GO Go Go Go Go.
Make an art joke. Make a joke about a joke. Joke with your friends. Laugh! Ha. Laugh untill your nose bleeds and your eyes pop out of your t-shirt. and your ears fill up with joysance and you cough up a toungue. Several toungues! Laugh untill you are a fountain of meat! Pave a trail of steaks and sausages to the white house! Walk on a carpet of mortified flesh. Eat to the beat. Meet and greet within ten feet! Wal to Wal people! Get your ten dollar DVD player! Run dont walk! You are a nation unified by art historical inevitability. You are manifested destiny! You are the chosen people! Set yuourself free! Set the world on fire! Kill Kill Kill!

So but back to earth art. I havent read what smithson wrote, but evidently its pretty good, I was surprised, because earth art, in retrospect seemed pretty pretentious - but it was reacting too (but not conservatively reactionary) the times, which were pretty stupid times.

"There is no freedom in that kind of behavioral game playing. The artist acting like a B.F. Skinner rat doing his "tough" little tricks is something to be avoided. Confined process is no process at all. It would be better to disclose the confinement rather than make illusions of freedom.

here

The essay owes something to the futurists no doubt.
But it could have been written today or something crazy like that.

Agent Smith: I killed you, Mr. Anderson. I watched you die.... with some satisfaction, I might add. Then something happened- something I thought would be impossible, but it happened anyway. You destroyed me, Mr. Anderson. Afterwards, I was aware of the rules. I knew what I was supposed to do, but I didn't. I was compelled to stay- compelled to disobey. And right now, here I stand because of you, Mr. Anderson. Because of you, I'm no longer an Agent of this system. Because of you, I'm unplugged. A new man, sort of speak- like you. Apparently free.
Neo: Congratulations.
Agent Smith: Thank you.
