When old age shall this generation waste,
Thou shalt remain, in midst of other woe
Than ours, a friend to man, to whom thou say'st,
'Beauty is truth, truth beauty,—that is all
Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.'

I maxed out my golden rectangle ages ago.

Need to see in person. The worry I have from the jpeg is that there's not much new or of interest being brought to this genre (hard-edged abstraction). I'm thinking of Heilman's funkifications, Halley's systems, Agnes Martin's subtle landscape references. . . this feels a bit too design-y to me.

Anyone into Carl Fudge?

jd. You don't need to see them in person. It sounds like you've already got it down. More than anything though, they're just not any fun to look at. I was there. I know. I didn't see anything, and not in an interesting I'm-not-seeing-anything kinda way. Definitely a contributor to my extended eye-rolling session in Chelsea the other weekend.

Once I got over this painting looking like recipe # 7 from "The Formalists Cookbook" I began to see the pairing (paring?) of colors that really make this piece vibrate. Focus on any one flat area and its color will pair off with another area, or maybe more than one in very complex ways. Once that starts to happen for you, if it does, then the hard edges and straight lines disappear and the painting begins to breathe a little.

can people bang their heads against them?then they might serve some purpose

Hard edged abstraction isn't boring to me. Both Sarah Morris and Torben Giehler are good. This isn't really in that realm but in a minor way there is something specific about it- this cartoony street scene. (Props to Becky from Bellwether for consistently showing female artists).

i like bellwether's new look.

HAA, what were the surfaces like?

Kelli, I do have to agree with you about Bellwether. She's one of the very few who actually show more than 50% women, I believe. Check out this site for stats:

Hey Dubz, which look are you referring to?

I have to say that some of these comments make me want to go back for another look. Maybe I did miss what I didn't see. Hmmm.

These paintings were interesting, clean, good color. I liked Axis Mundi's frames. They said hello and goodbye to me.

i couldn't get into them in person. but the room looked nicely installed.

jd, i meant bellwether's new logo/signage & web site. i really didn't like that animated girly bit they used to have...

cross - i like the pairing - it gets into symetry and knot theory.

Is this painter into maths?

I hear you, Dubz.

The web site fails to take into account smaller monitors, some of the stuff appears "below the fold" - but its an improvement.

Like the stenciled pubes.
Magna mater.

Tonya Bonakdar's site is nice - it fits smaller screens.

Mary Boones sucks. Still.

it was designed by

narrative rooms in Miami. Way to go mary.

yeah, but at least she got rid of those pretentious b/w portraits... except for peter halley...

This painting looks like the cover of an Algebra textbook.

Hard edge means it's 'hard to do' and 'hard to pull off' and less about some theorem, 'hard edge'--here, more probably about organizing qualities.
I like what 'cross' says... (s)he's taken the time to 'slow down', the painter, we, obviously need to be in there working too.
