These hardly qualify as paintings since they are painted over inkjet prints, and collage.

Ha, like he says, 20th century white man adrift. But he does his own thing, nothin' wrong with that.
Check out Baliwaves.com for today's surf. Small but good form, worth the paddle out.

cap to answer the question about where china art goes, it goes in the leipzig pile on grand scale. along with other moments when an eastern communist vibe starts souring into capital, at those moments of transition, as the veil falls away, the proponents have a good insight into the true nature and due to a general sense of morbidity in the west we buy it up, all that sad comeuppance, in a myriad of motives. so it goes under

I can see why Barnaby goes for Bickerton. But actually Barnaby's ahead of him.

But what about Zip? Is this skill to thrill, or drill to kill?

I'm with CP, I guess the guy lives this - live and let live...

What are we talking about, anyway? Escapism, alienation for the aging playboy on a private income?

But once you get 'away from it all' and you've done 'everything that takes' - you start to wonder whether the destination was worth it.

The meaning of the title is actually quite literal. Nora Jones' character, a waitress, eats a lot of blueberry pies.

The bored guards gamble for entertainment, ordering their PoWs to play Russian roulette. All three play; Steven survives his turn with a slight wound and is punished by incarceration to an underwater cage.

zipthwung said...

Is this revisionism? No, it’s the show’s core message: if you see something good in this ugly world — across a crowded room or in a hut on Bali Ha’i — seize it before it disappears.

zipthwung said...

For some reason, the people I meet in my country are not the same as the ones I knew in the United States. A mysterious change seems to come over Americans when they go to a foreign land. They isolate themselves socially. They live pretentiously. They're loud and ostentatious. Perhaps they're frightened and defensive, or maybe they're not properly trained and make mistakes out of ignorance.

CAP said...

It's funny when I first saw this jpeg, because of the frame and the scale of the ornament, I assumed it was quite small - more like a Peter Blake - kind of intimate, delicate.

The one in the art magazines, of just a woman's face, is the same - but even more like Peter Blake on acid.

Then when I saw the installation views, I realised these are going after overkill, in fact Over-overkill.

Now I'm wondering whether that blue can really be that intense, or is that just screen color?

Ad nauseum.

i mean the pose of criticality is sorta ludicrous when people willingly blow themselves to hamburger in order to make their point. What is this painting going to do, protect the wall from bloodstains?

Not everyone is "imnagininitive" but ab can riff so why not riff? My guess is the market is still stuck on some kind of theme park delusion left over from modernism.

Zip’s right about the aggression in these. They’re way too stressed. That’s why I don’t find them funny. The whole thing is just too tight, too elaborate. It labors the joke. Riffing on Gauguin or French imperiousism was always going to be pretty lame anyway – more the level of a music video – The B52s cover “Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair” and the art director’s got this thing for Gauguin and those Breton sweaters right? Gag gag.

You need a light touch, and AB has no faith in that. So he comes on as kind of desperate, almost a Don Rickles for the PoMo set. The fussy finish fella frantic for more sang froid. The frames will never be big enough, expensive enough to make the joke, a joke will never be enough, and beyond that the artist is just surfing… surfing, surfing, surfing… right up to the old gallery door.

James A Mitchener and the PT109 were denied shore leave that evening. One disobeyed and was killed in the blast. Gilligan and Ensign Parker finally make out down on the beach at high tide. Adam Troy is in his hammock and a bong away from bang, thinks to himself “Someday a tsunami is going to come and wash away all the scum, the heart ache, a Tequila mockingbird at dawn swilled like thunder across the bay. The fundamentalist things apply as time goes boing.

if luck hadn't chanced him in the company of those 'other guys' in his early daze, he might just be another outsider visionary tropical surrealist. but what makes it different is that he's not going for the chakras and mandalas feature set like your ol' garden variety visionary. He's got his thing, it's a vis vocab exclusive in some ways. You knows it's hellishly gaudy, but in it something alien aquatic appears. Do you go diving? When you look at a tropical plant, what imagined that it should look like that? Why is the palette and inner imagination of nature more exuberant around the equator? Everything seems to have it's own internal trajectory for the visual even if it can't see itself! And just when everything seemed certain, monsters from the deep just keep washing up. I like it for there to be the tropical surreal in the mix, but you couldn't pay me to live with one of these things. I'm sure they're a lot of fun to make, go digital! Material paint is material paint, but anything is painting. Painting is an act, the pathway to an image, and there are many ways to arrive at an image. Getting into structural analysis is so boring though and it's not for artists to give a fuck about. It's for crits.

CAP said...

"When that big left-hander cranks, it goes off," she said slipping into surfing jargon.

Bodyboard - generic term for Boogieboard. Also called lids (short for esky lids), shark biscuits, boogers and gut-sliders.

Heavy locals - unfriendly surfers who always surf a particular break and make it difficult for non-locals to catch waves. Sometimes their attitude extends to the beach, where they let your car tyres down or rub surfboard wax all over your windscreen to deter you from ever surfing there again.

Tom Snyder: Let's go back to 1967, the time you were winding up serving a term of a number of years, ten years, and written accounts indicate that you told the authorities, "Don't let me out, I can't cope with the outside world." Do you have a recollection of that? And do you --
Manson: You're making a desperate plea out of something, man. There's no desperate plea out of it. I said I can't handle the maniacs outside, let me back in.
Snyder: I didn't use the word desperate; that's your word, Charles.
Manson: Yeah, well, your inflection and your voice tones were, uh, implications there.

demons indeed.

Anonymous said...

I think what Bickerton is doing is continuing his junk culture critic, going at it in his sort of 'pomo sort of way' utopia-as-lost, crashing junk though not deeply examining it. Really, it doesn't crash enough, and doesn't crash through--Isn't that the idea? I don't see the painting or sculptures or whatever they are meant to be crashing into the junk and abuse. I see a concord of material that is seamless in its production. I see a lust for the past and 'desire', somewhat grasping for meaning driven by a metric to over-grasp the past.
Gauguin lusted a paradisiac / parodistic universe, and lived it and passed his world problems on, sure! But in a sense there was always this focus on the present which made some sense for painting, not always responsible, though they were passionate sense, in the plural--solving and adding as they went along. The problem--that's
still going on.

If AD surfs then it's OK!

It never ends, I was shocked to find out that amongst Leo Costelli artists back in the eighties which include all the grand doyance of pop arts of minimal art name, like Roy Liechtenstein, James Rosenquist, Jim Dune, Mike Kelly all these kind of people, they would be bickering and bitching about tiny little details - career advancements, inclusion in interviews, seating arrangements at dinner parties. I realized it just doesn't end. It doesn't matter where we stand. These guys, the painters of art history, they were like Gods on the mantel, among themselves in their Valhalla, and they were nit-picking like a bunch of fish wives. It never ends.

I've never been jealous. I learnt my lesson when I was young, when I worked for Goldstein. Goldstein spent such an inordinate amount of energy bitching about his contempories, somehow to his determent, it took away from his success, it was like a blade, turned harder in his back. I realized all the energy he spent on bitching. Better to ask - what the hell is this artist doing correctly that I'm not? Why is it working? Figure out how they do it. Do it better, save your energy for that. Not for whining!

Yes! Half the job is just showing up and it's absolutely true. One time I was on a trip to New York, one of the regular trips and I'm at a party. I'm holding a bottle of whiskey, got my arm around two other drunks, we're singing, acting really stupid in this party. I'm thinking, here you go again Ashley another bloody trip to New York, you got yourself drunk and your acting like an idiot at a party. Then I said wait a minute, look around the room, the entire power structure of the art world in their forties, that group is in this room. This is called work, having a good time getting drunk. So yes, it's been enormously good for my work, to be down here, because your level of concentration is unsurpassed. There are an enormous number of people who take care of things in your life here, while you can fully concentrate on work. But it's not good for career, because yeah you could do great things, but you do them in isolation, you pour them into a void without the kind of pre-buzz that's happens there.

Just thinking about what NWM said about exile. You think of a tropical island as somewhere to escape to, not from…

For Gauguin it was one thing and then the other.

I see AB was born in Barbados. Don’t know how long he stayed there, judging from the accent, a while. Too bad he didn’t stick with the Caribbean. He could have hung out with Chris Ofili and Peter Doig down in Trinidad. That would be so cool! For the career, I mean. They could talk about cricket and that.

But Tuan Ashley likes to keep his distance, if not his assistants.

Ok so he does surf> Then the art is good.
Bali serves up the idyllic wave--spent many a weekend there, dollar-a-day, the artist community then consisted of many locals, art framed not unlike AD's. The few out-of-towners there didn't surf for obvious coordinative reasons.
I guess too, the Jungles in Bali do look like these paintings. The surf, however, is different--the swell of life fills each ripple.

The virtual painting/actual painting deal probably has some mileage still in it. A few years ago there seemed to be tons of artists going at that. I would pass some of them in the corridors of power, on my rounds as janitor.

But I sense with AB it’s really THE THING: the dream ticket. The question is where he takes it after the tropical resort fantasies. You just know he’s not going to stick with those.

I forgot where i read it but there was this article saying that the new art was stuff like finding Nemo and stuff like that. I think AB paints a bit like Finding Nemo, the modeling and thing.
But, you know, in Nemo things move.
If you want to make paintings that are right up there with the likes of Nemo, wouldn't the next logical step be to make the things move?
You could still have the frame... A flat-screen behind.
We do need to get to this paint issue. And probably now is as good as time as any!
For me I'd go 100% virtual and say the paint is in the color and the color is in the screen. Each little pinprick of color, and these days these pricks are layered, represents paint. And when you see a whole lot of color rushing this way then you have this paint on the move, like wet moving around on wet, keeping everything in the mix, in the flow--in and out of the groove.

But.
Some of us may like to bring that truckload along, and I'm sure that's possible.
Right now all i can suggest is painting a few motifs over the front and even on the back of the screen. And that doesn't move, for sure, but stuff is moving behind it. It can work, in a way!

Suggestion two has it to make the images look like they are wearing paint. This way as the images move they can drip a little bit--leaving footprints of paint behind, even--sneezing cadmium blue, true!

All of this has its lentil in the idea that things are 'not fixed for dinner'. Ideas and paint are open for use and abuse. Painting still is about capturing the impossible which has some redux in the real.
Another way, it's simply about making choices. Making choices that work. As zip so eloquently added, then you have the fish-tank working for you [or did Hilary say that, she's another one always on the move, probably she's been to Bali too!].

Well, that's the deal!
That's Paint!

Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves), is an FBI agent and former Ohio State quarterback who, with his partner Pappas (Gary Busey), is investigating a string of bank robberies. Suspecting a connection between the bank robbers, known as the Ex-Presidents because they use masks of former US presidents, and local surfers, Utah goes undercover to infiltrate the surfing community. Knowing little of the lifestyle, Utah convinces surfer Tyler (Lori Petty) to mentor him.

In the process, Utah develops a complex relationship with Bodhi (Patrick Swayze), the charismatic leader of a gang of surfers who accept Utah into their midst. While Utah goes undercover in the hope of finding the bank robbers, he finds himself increasingly attracted to their adrenaline-charged lifestyle.

The Bodhi/Utah dynamic gets more complicated as Utah begins to zero in on Bodhi as the likely ringleader of the Ex-Presidents. Utah learns that Bodhi and his gang rob banks in order to fund their lifestyle, and as a form of rebellion against a social system that they believe "kills the human spirit". This creates an internal struggle for Utah, as his fondness for Bodhi and the lifestyle he epitomizes conflicts with his duty and responsibility as an FBI agent.

By the end of the film, Utah lets Bohdi seek his own death surfing the giant waves of Bells Beach, Australia.

The following excerpts are from “Mainstreams of Modern Art” the 1959 classic by conservative NY Times art critic John Cannaday and appear on pages 153-154, ”: … (his) name has become synonymous with the prostitution of technical prowess to any saleable subject. Whether he was painting high-class barroom nudes or holy pictures (…) was breathtakingly adept at assuming appropriate masks to conceal the meretriciousness of his conception (…) was such a skillful performer that the buying public saw no inconsistency in the work of a man who alternated between the roles of lecher and mystic. And indeed there is no inconsistency here, since in neither role was (….) an expressive artist: he was a salesman with an infallible eye for the market. But he was a technician of such prowess in a style soft and slick at the same time, that anyone who is at all interested in paintings can hardly fail to respond to one…as a performance, no matter what he might think of it as a work of art….The trouble with (…)’s perfection is that the conception and the execution are perfectly false. Yet this is perfection of a kind, even if it is a perverse kind, and (…) is proof that the art of painting is so various the even “bad” pictures can be fascinating when considered as part of the whole of man’s record of his own nature.”

Sorry folks but after visiting the show and watching the vid I was struck with the idea that Bickerton is the Bouguereau (the cat about whom the above phrases were written) of our day. There ‘s a sense of an over-achieving academic control, a technical standard that is too tightly wound to let the slightest hint of genuine human frailty enter, unless it’s as an add-on with “native naïve” sentiments. Problem is, I love Bouguereau and respect Bickerton, and it doesn’t make me feel any better. JK

But for the disciples, that revelation was not to be greeted with unalloyed joy. It was much too complicated for that. They were all too aware that for a Jewish man to act as if he were God could mean two things. Either he really was God in human form, or this was nothing short of blasphemy, and blasphemers were mad or demonic. Either way, they were usually dead before long.Army investigations recommended prosecution of two soldiers for negligent homicide and nine others for various offences including assault. However, the commanding officers determined that no charges would be referred, concluding that the detainee died as a result of a series of lawful applications of force in response to aggression and misconduct by the detainee.

I think Bickerton's success is due in no small part to his eyebrows.
Step one for making it in the art world- get yourself a set of amazingly expressive eyebrows. It doesn't hurt if your eyes are a little mad as well.
Step two: Sit back and let the cash roll in.
And for those aspiring artists without memorable eyebrows, don't despair, the world always needs ditch diggers.
