Champoin is chillin me out. Guy Duone - ill sample it and make a mashup. Mashups might be regulated by YouTube soon - that would suck.

I dont know if this is offf topic (ed- it is, and I do know) but I was reading an essay on the Motherfuckers (really) by John McMillian who teaches at harvard adn who has an essay in this months Believer - part of it is online, soemthing about smoking bananna peels.

Puking on your own face? What could be sweeter than that?

Nomi Lubin said...

OK. Since I've never posted here before, I should say something more relevant. I just found this site yesterday. I looked through it for hours. Hours. I'm a painter too.

I think it's a great site and a great idea.

Except for the mean elitist in group. That kind of sucks. But I'll be brave.

Im not sure what you mean by that UD. Is that a crack about painting, subject matter? What?

Do kids feel shame and guilt anymore? I know where u teach UD, in catholic school, they probably still do. But I mean regular kids.

I havent noticed that they do, much. And with nothing to sublimate, how are they motivated to create art? And what could the value of their work be?

Ok here's to romancing the lookie-loos, as DH would say.

Let us return to Balzac's sentence: no one (that is, no "person") utters it: its source, its voice is not to be located; and yet it is perfectly read; this is because the true locus of writing is reading. Another very specific example can make this understood: recent investigations (J. P. Vernant) have shed light upon the constitutively ambiguous nature of Greek tragedy, the text of which is woven with words that have double meanings, each character understanding them unilaterally (this perpetual misunderstanding is precisely what is meant by "the tragic"); yet there is someone who understands each word in its duplicity, and understands further, one might say, the very deafness of the characters speaking in front of him: this someone is precisely the reader (or here the spectator). In this way is revealed the whole being of writing: a text consists of multiple writings, issuing from several cultures and entering into dialogue with each other, into parody, into contestation; but there is one place where this multiplicity is collected, united, and this place is not the author, as we have hitherto said it was, but the reader: the reader is the very space in which are inscribed, without any being lost, all the citations a writing consists of; the unity of a text is not in its origin, it is in its destination; but this destination can no longer be personal: the reader is a man without history, without biography, without psychology; he is only that someone who holds gathered into a single field all the paths of which the text is constituted. This is why it is absurd to hear the new writing condemned in the name of a humanism which hypocritically appoints itself the champion of the reader's rights. The reader has never been the concern of classical criticism; for it, there is no other man in literature but the one who writes. We are now beginning to be the dupes no longer of such antiphrases, by which our society proudly champions precisely what it dismisses, ignores, smothers or destroys; we know that to restore to writing its future, we must reverse its myth: the birth of the reader must be ransomed by the death of the Author.

mean and elitist?

Circuit bending is the creative short-circuiting of low voltage, battery-powered electronic audio devices such as guitar effects, children's toys and small synthesizers to create new musical instruments and sound generators. Emphasizing spontaneity and randomness, the techniques of circuit bending have been commonly associated with noise music, though many more conventional contemporary musicians and musical groups have been known to experiment with "bent" instruments.

Not to be a big dink, but what subject matter for painting is not lame? We are all a little lame...but really, I'd really like to know..

youth--less said...

he said...critiquing pithy subject matter is lame. i still dont know what he means or what it has to do with the last 2 pictures (and not the rest) anyway... maybe this picture is so good because it doesnt try to make things better, be funny, synthesize or be catharic. It just makes you cringe.

dinky dingle

another-painter said...

Clumsiness and idiocy now pass as virtue,
As if the work is more legitimate for being purposely lame
The critique of aesthetics has become its own aesthetic… zzzzzzzz.

Kim Dingle’s show, however, is fantastic- the painting of the dishwasher station (In the back room) in particular. Read her bio/press release and you’ll know where the work is coming from- rather than being some bullshit promotion; it’s a biography.

Great show
And as for the naysayers’ - fuck ‘em.

aight. i'm a big fan of dishawashing - when I was nineteen I held down a 120 person capactiy sunday brunch solo - dried egg yolks and all. Tempura, bitch! But thats over. Now I cant even bench 50 or whatever.

"Not to be a big dink, but what subject matter for painting is not lame? "

indeed - but death is a good one. Anyone who does death is fine by me. Tell me death is lame.

Any corporate lobby that has death in it is ok by me too. Haven't seen it yet.

oh I liked "lets keep it casual" on 27th - neon with that sort of crayola scratchboard underpainting effect. yeah, maybe im going soft, but it wokred better than the other psychedelia they had.

When I say I hate something...that doesnt make me a naysayer. It means that I was moved. Got it?

I have a question. Do the painters of these paintings often come on here? Do they read what's been written about their work?

Barnaby said...

never..

Nomi Lubin said...

Barnaby, what's it like to read uncensored comments dismissing your work? Is it interesting? Upsetting? Helpful? Harmful?

These are straightforward questions. I'm really curious.

Barnaby said...

*I think this is the most I've ever commented on here..Painter will you buy me a cocktail next time I see ya? ok fine...*

Well I guess for the same reason I don't hold conversations with everyone on my subway car because we all have a mutual interest in getting off at 88th street.. I don't really care what, for the most part, anonymous bloggers have to say about my work..and actually find most of the insults funny..(especially when half the time someone points out something they hate..that happens to be exactly what I was going for..I mean what the hell do you say to that? so be it..)

I'm not saying I'm not into dialogue..I just like to know who I'm talkin' to (in regards to my own work)

nomi artist come on here rarely as themselves when posted but I always like it when they do. Some that I remember coming on are.
Zack Smith,
Amy Sillman,
Rosson Crow,
Kelli Williams
I would image it would depend on the artist and how good the discussion is for them to care or not. More times than not they post youtube stuff and links that I am not sure are making a connection to the artist posted. I like looking at this site to see what shows are up.

Nomi Lubin said...

Thanks to both of you. Interesting.

zipthwung said...

I think sometines some people think they're getting one over on the viewer, when in fact the viewer generally has a pretty good idea of what is going on. I read Spy magazine, and I'm up on gawker and I've seen a lot of art.

SO what is there to talk about? Push pull? negative space? color theory?

Sure, these are all things that concern a real artist. But after a while it starts to blur into one. How do you keep the conversation going ewhen you've seen an yet another ironic jab at the endless stream of suburb bound yuppies that innundates the urban environment? Are you one of them? Do you wish you were?

Are you a manhattanite borna dn bread? Do you wish it was different? The same?

I post you tube stuff and often it is meaningless, but just as often It has meaning. I dont think there is any one means of discourse that is more effective across the board.

I dont talk to most peopel that get off on 88th street, but when I do talk to peopel on the subway, its generally pretty intertesting.

The other day I talked to someone about the V-Tech massacre. I was reading the NY Post, a tabloid newspaprer with ac onservative bent and a sort of shrill tone - it costs a quarter.

I guess I'm just curious and I get kind of pissed off when people can't get down and actually talk shit.

A certain hate-is a frisson-its almost delightful-at least it rubs you-better to be rubbed on the wrong nub-snagged-a twinge in your chest that is amusing, not like a migraine which is not amusing
