its got that donald baechlor, guston, chagall black line deal - but im not a historian - my vote is this artist is a drawer and the line is merely (or purely!) a consequence of the brush as a drawing tool.

Why do artists limit their palette? To appear serious? Sometimes. The times made a big deal of pointing out Bryce Marden's heretical use of color. What courage!

Easy for me to say NOW. right? For example, Guston (what courage!!!) almost got burned at the stake for cartooning.

Cartoons!

Ah but thats all cannonical whetever you call legendary apocryphal and so on.

Which leaves me with the question - is the affectation of limited palette working here?

I'm getting into the hallucinogenic or psychadelic palette - for one its more fun and for two, well why not take BOTH pills and see what the matrix has to offer?

Bull, horns, dillema.

What is it with the dutch and limited palette? Is it a puritanical thing?
Where is the scarlet letter?

Like the japanese, the dutch are some of the worlds greatest graphic designers. i'd say they are 1 & 2. So these kind of beautiful loser things that lack taste are a national departure. Like that Tomoo Gokita. The good, the bad and the ugly is making the rounds.

nahh, the limited palette isn't working here..neither are the drawing components of egon and guston..no variation of line.. don'tcare how classroom that sounds cause all this seems to really flatten this thing right out..she may be more concerned with painting a rabbit taking a poop than achieving the same thing as some of those fellers....

This painting is neither cathartic (dyonysian) nor cerebral (appolonian) enough for me.

i imagine guston was a welcome relief from the church of high art - but nowadays who are you providing the anal suppositories for? Upper east siders who compete to get their kids into pre kindergarten with printed C.V.s of their achievements?

(bowel movements, bathrooms used, toilet paper preference, vocabulary list, IQ test, psych evaluation, blood type, genetic profile, lineage, friend list, income)

I propose a moratorium on that shiznit. I guess if thats your millieu its a harsh realm. I dont have to though. Its a real relief. Plop. Plop, fizz.

De Kooning didn't have a problem with colour, was technically Dutch.Guston didn't get into trouble for introducing cartoons - Pop Art did that - Guston got into trouble because his cartoons looked too much like Ab-Ex and Pop Artists thought that wrong, while Ab-Exers thought they made Ab-Ex too much like Pop Art and they didn't like that. Both sides felt betrayed or undermined. But old Phil didn't give a shit - as De Kooning said to him (reportedly) at the time. "There is only one issue here, and that's freedom!". Of course you pursue that at a price to popularity or consensus, but so be it!

this painting is very nice

don't you think?

Why deny yourself the pleasure? SHit or get off the pot right? Yeah, thats the way the haymarket needles and the riots read their acts.

Dekooninhg used to say "jail" as a play ont he "Yale" as in "I'm going up to teach at Jale"

Those dutch people and their funny spanish accents.

Van Gogh:, Yeah another Dutch artist who had some very interesting ideas about color and outline! Don’t recall him using rabbits, but was open to literary illustration, pastiche and parody of famous paintings, swirl and ripple filters of art nouveau software. Too bad the thing got to be a killer app. But he never just pleased himself and he was never too pleased with himself or his paintings. He knew they could do more if you asked more of them and the way to do that required rigor and discipline as much as flair and impulse. Check out the letters – a more dedicated and professional painter is hard to find. Lust for Life? that’s a comfortable fantasy about artists as these out-there creatures, we don’t have to bother too much with. It’s The Story Of Art for people who really don’t like art much.

Whatever happened to Rita Ackerman? Did motherhood take its toll?
But I take Closeuup's point, you can only digress on Hannah Van Bart's meagre effort so far. Have we got there yet?

Everything that has happened has happened you may not remember that it has though it certainly has, everything that has...
I got a call last night, about 12 midnight. It was a call to come out and play. I said that I had already played. But the color of the call pressed me that I had not played because if I had I would be playing with the caller and the others playing who were already. I said I played. The caller maintained that I hadn't, he said, ‘everything that has happened has happened and the play that is here has not happened, and won’t happen until you come out and play’. Further he said, ‘If you do not come out a hole will develop somewhere in the universe, and you will have to go there, and find it, and patch it up. What is easier?’ The caller's logic was getting impressive, 'And if there is a hole in the whole universe and you don't find it in time, and remember once out in that vastness time doesn't matter, so you who had stepped out to fix the hole matter wouldn’t care about the matter once you are out there.’ I understood that! ‘This will then lead to a trigger, which will turn on an 'anti-play’ reaction, which will then effect the ‘fore-play’ reaction and in doing so each play will be canceled out one by the other. Then one by one, like light bulbs going out across the planet, there will be の play, and no light. This, my friend, will set off another reaction, a bigger chain reaction. And if it continues as planned the rules of the play will be lost forever. There will be no book of play. No play channel. No play ground. No balls. No bikes. No stolen baby carriages. There will be no game soft, and you would be the cause of it. What do you thinK?‘
The caller had made a sound and very solid case, '..and who could possibly live with all that?'
…so as such... the tale as written.

Brer didn't need to go out and fix the something that would have been forgotten anyhow nor did he have to worry about it ...

...'oooooookkkkkkk, I'll play then'.... 'OK', I said, 'ok, I'll come out and play...'
...and with that Brer Rabbit and Little fox at a TIME of 01:31.45, on a Friday in early May, found themselves at play in Aoyama, in time for everything to happen as usual.
