it doesn't matter if someone uses photos. As long as they do something interesting with it and aren't too much a slave to the photo image.

Zak Smith fails both those tests, BTW.

He obviously doesn't use a projector--clearly none of these people talking about the alleged slavish copying have ever seen these pictures in person--or if they have they havn't looked too close

also, nobody's mentioned that the GR drawings and octopus pictures were cmpltetly invented. if you'd seen the show it'd be impossible to forget the biggest piece there.

And people are probably eager to defend Zak because he made this blog readable again when he showed up--the suff about Hernan Bas and Marilyn M is genuinely interesting because people are trying to avoid personal attacks and make arguments.

pretty much

Yes, clearly, clearly, none of us have seen them in person.

I can see how the arguments have improved. Verily.

so tell us, 6:06, tell us about the show--where was which work? what gallery was it at? when did you go? which pieces were there?

I've seen his solo show, his whitney wall, his armory pieces, and some stuff at scattered group shows. I don't remember where everything was hung at any of them. I guess you'll have to trust me? Why would I lie? What would I gain from vocally disliking an artist I haven't seen?

Are you zak defenders that intent on hunting down everyone who dislikes your boy?

I don't see how it even matters. There are some artists that have to be seen up close, but I've never noticed an appreciable difference between photos of Smith's stuff and the real thing.

it's just baffling that you could come up with all this "slavish copying" business if you'd seen the show--I mean, half the fucking stuff is abstract, the perspectives are warped, all the paint's dried in pools and there are sketch lines all over the place.

and again, what about the octopus thing? do you really think he trained cephalopods to breath air and draped them over a hundred models and found a real-life place that looked like a giant arcade/bordello for a background?

Sounds like there is a whole lot of envy out there. Zak is selling lots of art and banging lots of beaver and all you haters are not. Hey I can admit it. I can't remember the last time I sold a painting and the last woman I nailed has last night when I decided to name my right hand Martha. I must say however the two Zak satire postings are indeed very rich.

The answer to this is easy.

I meant WHEN Smith uses photos, he is slavish and unimaginative. Since anyone who's seen a decent selection of his work knows he doesn't always work from photos, I thought that would be fairly obvious.

When he's working from imagination, he's just clunky and overwrought. Can I go now?

What about the haters who aren't competing for beaver? What's our excuse?

This blog rolls on. I think that's great.
Here is my two cents. Does it matter that he uses photos(which he clearly does when figure drawing)? Yes and no. Yes because of the product issue someone brought up. No again because of the product issue. Move those units I say. I hope he saves his moola however and hopefully his crazy persona does not include drug use. That will eat him up and spit him out faster than those punky tatooed chicks aparently do when they are gobbling his wad. And do the haters have envy issues. Of course they do. Freud discussed that one. No matter how much beaver you get, you are always compairing that with how much your bud is getting. Now Zak may not get that grade A stuff. It looks more like grade D stuff, but I have a feeling every so othen he scores a nice Westchester deb who feels like taking a walk on the wild side. That is enough from me tonight. I think I will be turning in early and go a round or two with my Martha. I however call my righty Bruce. Cheers.

Zak,

I am sure you do not care what is written here any more but it seems that others still do. Let that go to show you that whatever it is you are, and what ever your art is, has touched a nerve. That is very good. I have seen your work for sometime now most recently at the Armory show. Your work moves me. You are a very good artist. Keep on going. I can't wait to see where you go with it.

Agreed anon 1:14. Anyone who sparks so much passionate debate days after the original posting must be doing something right.

what a stupid way to judge the value of a thing

There has been a lot said about his work here as well :

Nice! I nearly spit my drink out on that one.

You are all a bunch of foolish, know-nothing art ignorants. Zak is one of the best young artists living today, and one of a shameful few with a truly unique vision. Clearly most people posting here are bland artists who have no talent of their own so they bust down whatever quality they can find because their jealously makes them seethe with hatred. Bunch of haters. Shame on you all.
