I like the frame...
Where can we see this live, painter?

It is in California.
He has a show up at Peres Projects in Los Angeles.
He has the up side down
Holy Shit painting at the Whitney.

He's shown at Rivington Arms, too.

Is that a black lab she's holding? I don't know. Would it be nice? I don't like dogs and I don't like the Beach Boys. I used to like smokey nostalgic innuendo. No thanks. Just looking.

Surfs Up brah!

Anonymous said...

who doesn't like dogs? museum directors?

said it before: few things are worse than middle-class well-educated people pretending to be Napoleon Dynamite. Being a painter is a hard job and artists deserve a genuine discourse as opposed to gossip, envy and anonymous, ironic detachment.

snake,
if 'anonymous' is one facet of the brain-heavey grad school students, you represent one of the other major platoons---smart kids who cover their brains with a jester hat. i am interested in hearing what you have to say about the painting (as well as your creative 'anonymous' bashing...fuck 'em).

this painting...very interesting...rides the shape shifting image fence well....are we looking into a mirror? into our neighbors window? the past? for such a simple image the ambiguity holds my attention quite nicely...prolong the tell!

ps- i am a grad student.

anonymous is weak-own up.

Hey, Jeff Spicoli was actually referring to the frame - the "woodie" was the vehicle of choice for transporting surf boards - sort of the SUV of its time? The weathered frame?

Am I wrong? I quite enjoy the Beach boys ref as I LIKE THE BEACH BOYS for real, harmony is nice in this age of dissonance.

Crystal ships on the water...stop children whats that sound....

Disnmiss my tone, but its not shallow. Nor is it deep. It just is.

looks like a chalkboard-looks like no-one knows what to make of it-

I think Max Snakeman has stopped them dead in their tracks. OR perhaps this painting is too knowingly nostalgic for people to deal with.

I have long term reality memory loss. Anything before a week but after about 1992.

Reminds me of those horror movies where the oily finger writing appears in the newly steamed mirror.

zipthwung said...

I googled fog of memory - no time to find the ref but look what I found, its so exciting:

baby, when I think about you I think about...

I haven't been on this blog in a very long time, but boy has it deteriorated!

zipthwung said...

MArta, wow, that was so incitefull.

Now how about clicking on the link to the Eco and engage in a little free asociative game with me. I can smell you. You smell like vested interest. Or we can do dinner. I'll bring the Fava beans.

Anonymous said...

marta, it is true. Let help the joy return.

Anonymous said...

i am not sure if i have been to one of his shows, this image is kinda sexy however, i am partial to copy in painting... - is this the same guy from Rivingtonarms?

Anonymous said...

I admit it. Finally. It feels so good to say it. I am weak and paranoid. Max Snakeman is right. I am unsure of myself, so I hate on others. I can't even move sometimes, because I am so insecure.

zipthwung said...

Luke, its dinner time. We have some tasty blue drink and pieces of your Aunt Beloo.

Apparently people read things in a non-linear fashion sometimes. I find that disturbing.

Anonymous said...

this is kind of similar to Renee ricard's paintings, which for some reason I occasionally like, perhaps against better judgment. His are more cunty however, and thats a lttle more refreshing. I like Colen's work somewhat but feel displaced by its overarching self-awareness(dumb term) and detachment ..a la nick relph and oliver payne(sic?)...seems a little too cool for school at times

Anonymous said...

snake sounds like an annoying highschool student who deseperately craves attention. some theatre sports fuckhead or somethin like that. you're a grad student snake? where? devry?
you know, a lot of people on here aren't grad students, they're in their 30's and successful. or their 40's. you need to go watch OC douchebag

zipthwung said...

When ever I made work like this in school my prof said "clever" meaning good but not transcendent. But then he was a pure geometric abstract painter. What if I'd gone to UCLA back when Spin magazine wrote that article? I bet I's be surfing.

Anonymous said...

Keep your mind focused on the work, anonymous. I am watching you.

operation enduring artist said...

again i ask....d? where has it gone?

Anonymous said...

Snake is funny.

Anonymous said...

i love snake.

Anonymous said...

Me too.

this dan colen won't be around for long. peter schuyff was doing this shit, painting over old paintings, in the 80's.
luckily colen has rich friends to help him through the hard times.

I loved the upside down Holy Shit painting at the Whitney. It was my favorite thing in the this years biennial. It captured the whole show for me and it was in the stairwell. How awesomnew was that, to place it in the stairwell like a piece of trash discared from the show when in fact it was the show. Holy Shit upsied down? And you people are asking what is he about? What are you about? Paint something.

Stelios Argiros said...

His stuff is like stupid graffiti and high art meeting.
Stoner meets the Met and they flip the bird to eachother.
Lo and Hi together again. I prefer the line between lo and hi to be more blurred.
I find his work a little too cute though. Cute humor.. "Like haha I'm doing bs work on realistically painted imagery. My friends will laugh."
Humor is sketchy in painting and other media.
I think Cattellan is funnier, edgier, and smarter. At least with Cattellan there is something beneath the humor. It works in Currin's too. Except for the skateboard paintings, which I think are excellant, the other stuff puts me too sleep.

Him and his buddy Dash (Dashell) try to speak but the silver spoons stop them from communicating. Rich kids that try to act like they are from the streets need a have their trust funds taken away......lil' bitchs

God, the first time EVER I don't straightaway hate something, and people are already talking about choking me. Can't win.

Snake is funny. Somebody get him a strong coffee and another case of High Life. But lay off Bard. Save that shit for Columbia and Yale.

i thought 'hi' 'low' was dead with po-mo?

Anonymous said...

Did anyone see Dan's painting in the Whitney?

zipthwung said...

Yes, I saw the boulders and the "holy shit!" and the holy shit looked like spray paint, so i didnt look too closely to see if the surface was prepared in a classical manner or not...the boulders I liked but.... suburbia is over...whats next?

Yeah, this blog sure has gone to the dogs. I used to really enjoy it too.

Anonymous said...

was it the one at the very top, kinda had to look for it like those little tiny scary looking up high faces?

Anonymous said...

ah ya. confirmed, that piece was successful in so that it got us to actually say 'holy shit' a little context heavy. - 'biennial art' i guess enough one lines right a book.

Anonymous said...

I liked Colen's boulders at the biennial. They were well crafted and had plenty to say. The finely rendered word-bases were key, I thought, to their success - some how reinforcing the implied elevation of the low that Colen seems to be all about. I like this painting from the jpeg, and I don't mind most of the works I have seen by Colen, though I thought that the spray-paint paintings that he had at the Biennial where among the worst things there.

That said, whats up with the Rivington Arms artists having such a high profile at the Biennial? Yeah, Colen, Dash Snow and Hannah Liden all have some talent, but there are a lot of artists in NY that are just as deserving and were passed over. Seems odd that, while this show has been publicly praised for its attempt to widen the local perpective by scouting artists from all over the world, 3 artists from Mirabelle Marden's gallery were basically given their big break. Is the NY art world really that canabalistic? Is Brice on the board of directors at 75th St.?

Anonymous said...

7. A rejection of the distinction between "high" and "low" or popular culture, both in choice of materials used to produce art and in methods of displaying, distributing, and consuming art.

po-mo. yo.
not a qualifier

Anonymous said...

Neversay die to po-mo. It may be on the way out, but it will never leave us entirely. Art concepts are not so much thrown away as devoured and sweated out of the pores of future work. As long as there is more content than just the low=high=low schtick, I am happy. At least in Colen's painting here we get the illusion of supernatural presance in the smoke-writing. It may be a bit too cleverly done, but it is hinting at the right thing.

Anonymous said...

fair enough, "juxtaposition" "modernity" or "high and low" make me want to gag someone with dirty panties.
if new Art-form's are developing we need expanded language and terms, other wise venues and audience.

zipthwung said...

yeah, hi-lo is tired. I mean get to the process allready. Or show me whatcha gonna make with all that folded hi-lo dough.

I mean its heuristics now. actually unless you are making painting as a sort of living history monument, then what is painting as far as ARRRRt goes?

Anonymous said...

i think history need to be re-examined i can draw a pretty clear line from dada to pop i don't see happen enough. there i go, posting to much again. nite.

Anonymous said...

oh gee luke, thx so much for jumpin in here with your much not required input and insults, however i don't think anyone was trying to give an overarching definition of the postmodern here, but rather just glance at one aspect of its attributes in operation and formal results - kinda like talking about color of the season. - is that ok?

"The value was in the optimistic
world-view" wow. that really worked out eh? irony its what's for dinner. now we can look back at the operation of the piece and...

zipthwung said...

painting is dead. OMG what ever will we do. Arrrrt.

Anonymous said...

Dan is low-brow. No trust fund there. No spraypaint in holy shit - oil trompe l'oil, seemed to work pretty well, huh.

Boulders are so low craft its incredible. Chicken-wire and papier machier, then gesso and oil-paint. Trompe L'oil peeps. How far does that take us back. How close are we with the boulders. Dan puts up personal stuff, that he thinks is cool. You comment on it and we will all learn something.

Anonymous said...

trompe l'oil?
I know that art history 101 class is pretty early, but you should go every once and a while dude.

zipthwung said...

What are you talking about anon? Are you going to argue with my def of tromp l'huile oil ole whatever?

Because if you are you are a pedantic nit.

Otherwise, go back to the show, I am.

pop but hey it makes the kiddies happy
