Could this be where Georgia O'Keeffe would have gone, if she had stayed in New York? Something very nostalgic about this one and the other on the KS website. Maybe they refer back to when frank feminist statements had to be semi concealed in a sort of pseudo-abstraction, with layers of denial brushed carefully across the canvas. But sometimes simplicity is just there to hide simplicity.

Thanks quisquilloso, I did not get those to come up the first time. That does change my comment... Now I would change the word "other" to "others". ;-)

The "other one" was the sort of tree-fork-with-snow one. Some of these are really more like cartoon symbolism than abstraction. 'Pictionary' comes to mind.

And now I see I should apologize to devotees of Georgia O'Keeffe.

Looks like a painting of how to measure if you are bow-legged.

Also reminds me of Wesley, its the same pink.

This is like a tube sock filled with soap: hard and to the gut.
Just kidding, but I'd use naval oranges.
God loves a visual pun. I love pantyhose, fruit as genitalia and concrete. I'd take it further into a Cady Noland territory - maybe a big target with some plaster orofices or something.

I think the art historical section in my brain got demon baby food on it, or maybe its oozing out my ear. Either way I'm probably shitting on someone's very personal experiences or, conversely, someone who survived synched menstral cycles and would love to just chill with domesticated animals in a back yard bbq. bring the kid, I'll grill it up. A guys gotta eat.

My due date is in three days and no matter what I try, our cat continues to sleep in our baby's crib. Now I just keep the door closed -- but that won't work once our baby arrives! Any suggestions? I'm gonna keep my baby

28 days late with the wine and roses.

They are not long, the weeping and the laughter,
Love and desire and hate;
I think they have no portion in us after
We pass the gate.

They are not long, the days of wine and roses:
Out of a misty dream
Our path emerges for a while, then closes
Within a dream.

Molly Smith your work would do great here! Really!
Formally taught, pictorially simple, clear, light and dark.
Nice tension.
I hope that horizontal rod, though, doesn't pierce through the two curtains' back-of-the-knees. I've heard of bound feet, never before bolted knees. Beautiful!
Try Gallery Side 2, Tokyo.

Feels like L. Bourgeois drawings meet Pettibon. The surrealist element is graphic marks loaded with sexual content; Like pictographs of very specific sensations. I usually don't like clumsy but these are thoughtfully clumsy in a way that makes me kinda horny. Maybe they are images of what the body feels like when they it is experienced as an object.

CAP said...

There's definitely a sexual undercurrent to a number of them (Crotch, Wedge - my favorite!) so I'm assuming these are legs, not curtains.

But how many of us have foolishly made that mistake before?

In the philosophy of science, two theories are said to be incommensurable if there is no common theoretical language that can be used to compare them. If two scientific theories are incommensurable, there is no way in which one can compare them to each other in order to determine which is better.

The theory of cognitive dissonance states that contradicting cognitions serve as a driving force that compels the mind to acquire or invent new thoughts or beliefs, or to modify existing beliefs, so as to reduce the amount of dissonance (conflict) between cognitions.

hi, I'm sure you get this question a lot. But I am totally confused right now. I'm 19, and attend college. I've always been in long relationships with men. I'm attracted to men, and they turn me on. But recently I met this lesbian in my class and we've been talking. When we chat I get turned on. I have never done anything with a woman, besides making out drunk. Could I be a lesbian, or is this a normal/ new experience feeling?

tried discussing the pregnancy and the baby with him and he was all for it at first until we got into one of our regular fights. He told me last night as I went to sleep on the couch that he hoped I die in my sleep. He told me that he didn't want me to keep the baby and to have an abortion. I asked him if he would help me with the cost of an abortion and he said "how do I know that baby is mine", I'm not helping you do anything. I asked him what he was going to do if I couldn't afford to have an abortion and ended up keeping the baby and he told me I would need to find a father.

... well there you go Q, U grew after-all.
it could be a moray eel on its last legs, left right flank more healthier ones. Na! But you get a slippery space. Sculptures look good too! Might be good to go to the NM and check out the geometric small worlds of Tomma Abts and then check these, Molly Smith, or visa versa. Interesting correlation, different means, both are moist but not wet. One labor one less.

Q similarities maybe 'personal close space', do i pass? One has this slight narrative that doesn't actually go anywhere, or oscillates from formal to narrative and back again, as you point out. The other pulls back and forth on the strings in the world of abstraction, rendition, and illusion, so we can see similarities there. Of course Abts doesn't work with narratives per say though her designs are involved in their linear narrative, one across the other, and you do find a visual narrative within via the layers, all that. Really no relation!
Nozkowski is getting a lot of talk lately [I had to be satisfied with JKreport]. Will B interesting to hear him and Schutz on abstraction--similar conduits? Or very different?
The dissimilarities are, of course, this piece looks like it's built in a few minutes to last a few minutes, which adds to its ephemeral appeal, the play off delicate and preciousness, something that you know you can't hold on to forever, but would like to--first love, kiss. That's the japanese appeal. I guess we all hold it somewhere. Abts has that German quality of concrete, celestial crystalline and starry night loops which give the feeling that they are being built to last past the next antiquity, as under-heaven bunkers.

So not the same but different, differences that are interesting to note, perhaps. or maybe it's just me.

CAP said...

I think you're right-on about Abts, (and MS) Concrete.

Fanatical work ethic - kinda crafty. Versus the opposite.

But what's this about a Nozkowski/Schutz dialogue?

Nozkowski is quoting other painters? I think. I noted simularities to Latin artists. Maybe its reverse colonialism.

Like dollhouse paintings - modest scale. What's not to like. Plus, hey, Pace is the place.

Same here - art school feel, a+ but my tastes run to art made by wild dogs - Mark Bradford unbound or something. I'll know it when I see it, cuz I know what I like do what you want, just dont stop making me ill. Yesterday's gone I think I slipped through the cracks of a sunbeam.

I can't find anything of interest in this Molly Smith. Sorry...

Looking for something
Eyes closed in suspense
Waiting for someone
Does it make any sense?

Only an hour
To make it all mine
Hardly worth waiting
And I don't have the time

Search for conviction
With eyes open wide
Feeling so restless
So empty inside

Plenty of chances
And no one will win
Over and over
And over again
Needing somebody
Needing some help
Slipping into something
And out of something else

but you really have to hear it

re: Nozkowski. Those are lovely... but...does anyone else have the feeling that figure/ground just doesnt cut it anymore? Do we live in a figure/ground world? I cant tell the difference anymore.

Something about easel or small-scale abstraction - like trying to get the genie back in the lamp, close Pandora's box, or shut the stable door - afterwards.

It always looks kind of natty, clever, polished and knowing - a bit like Eric Clapton playing the blues.

At least Molly stops short of that. Trouble is she stops short of most other things as well.

maybe right! Think you are giving Molly the wrong brush. Of course I love a bazillion ideas all rushing for the front door. I do too love the ferris wheel of life gyrating boogie or bust spinning so close to the ground then so high. Up I love when the whole thing unhinges, just flies off, as the island's coast's cries settle as they distance. Matter is every mark a mirror the overwhelming price we have to pay for having cable tV, just to watch the news occurring right across the street. We don't call it that, the terror in horror bee gees. It is paramountly important to remember more is more. I mean you don't see McDonalds sellin' mini macs with thinner slice cheese. Do you? More!

I read the Roberta, small but still packed. Molly's running on slightness and ease. That's her canon fodder.
