i think he's improved since his last show at ZF, but there's something mildly offensive about these. perhaps it's the scale vs. quasi-intimate figuration?
He was lucky though, he escaped the klutches of an evil dealer (my former one) to find purchase ZF. This looks better than earlier ones I've seen. How big is it?
they are not nice to see. they hurt the colored part of the eyeball, the part that can't succomb. i want them to continue morphing. they don't. instead they impede and swirl. like car sick.
Too photoshoppy. What is it about photoshop - the bulge filter, the tworl filter, the find edges posterized and paint by numbers filter? Quit fucking filtering.
Good point Zip. Who isn't sick of computer-assisted imagery? You have to do better than just copy what the computer can do. What about what the paint can do? What about the mess-ups and gloppy strangenesses? Those are my questions.
Do not let the discomfort of motion sickness disrupt your travel plans. Motion sickness can be prevented. Herbal remedies and over-the-counter products can help treat mild discomfort; however, prescription strength medicine may be needed by persons who tend to develop nausea and vomiting. Scopolamine, the active ingredient in the prescription medicine SCOPACE, was rated the "single most effective drug in preventing nausea and vomiting induced by motion" by the American Hospital Formulary Service in its reference textbook, AHFS Drug Information 1996.
Word up! Though I dont mind Benjamin Edwardz stuff, for example - at least its "obsessive" - Saltz said he had a masterpiece, which I think is true in that he mastered pieces. Ewards sensibility reminds me of 80's sci fi covers - sensibility of Omni magazine covers where its sort of an impressionistic spaceship made up of palette knife jabs of white on aprussian blue background. Happy little spaceships Couldnt find them but- cut and paste bottom link - eighties - you could hang out at Barcade in W-burg and wear a members only jacket, collect Nagel prints...Checkered Vans... http://www.thegreatescapeonline.com/nonmuze/images/SPECIALTYMAG999900412672MAGAZINEBC.jpg
sorry, i'm only angry about this work b/c it tries so hard to give the art world exactly what it wants at the given moment: Massive paintings that could fit in a museum, lots and lots of detail (ooh, he's a workaholic!), reference to technology (computer), lots of bright colors, the human figure with operatic scale... but they're still not good as art. they make me think of money changing hands and aggressive ambitions.
Anon I feel sorry when the work is unliked too I would hate to stumble across that on my work. But I have so far posted only work that I think has some notable quality and for the most part I like what I post in some way shape or form. I want to be positive and let everyone be a star for a day.
trust me, having a solo show at ZF is being a star for a month. we shouldn't feel bad being honest. he's already got a public forum. i vote to drizzle bile over ZF gallery in a show of solidarity.
I feel a little bad unloading on Jin. So I'll say something positive: I like the way he mixes mediums (oil, acrylic, ink, charcoal) in the new works. To me though, the work really isn't saying anything except "look at me. I'm a huge painting with lots of stuff on it."
You know who I hate at ZF almost as much as the Meyerson's is that girl who does the 'kooky' doodle druggy girl-world drawings... what's her name? Puke. Ooo and the girl who records what she ate for breakfast and how much she spent on vasaline that month... what's her name? Oh yeah, and that japanime guy (who's white) who put's cartoon titty girls giving bj's in an abstract painting... Hmmm. So that's 4 bad ZF moments right there.
i saw these paintings today. while i appreciated some of the imagery that was going on, and therefore perhaps some of the content, the way they are painted is static and boring. i thought about the many hours that the artist must have spent meticulously filling in the colors for his pre-planned computer -generated idea.
wow i'm a painter and i love this blog! i have no comment on jin meryerson specifically but i'm excited to know that this blog is here and now i WILL go see this show, so the blog's doing a good deed too. i cant wait to weigh in next time. when someone said "no likey" i laughed out loud! did anyone go to the outsider art fair? what was it like?

Yes, way to big.

they are massive - they completely fill the walls at the gallery. they must have been made to spec.
I disliked his earlier work. I am concerned that I would not like these. Negatory. WW, are they scorching your eye like yesterday?

This is an awful state for your eyes, I can see you are very sensitive WW. Take some sniffs of the smelling salts if you are uneasy.
painter, do you like getting car sick? or do you find the bumps and swirls soothing to the painterly system?

Salle, Loeb...

Oh no. I am not into all the movement never have been. My Mom use to give me Dramamine before long car trips. This show upset my senses too.
Worst Artist Ever.
2 words: size compensation.

even with drugs, these paintings continue to disturb.
i saw a radioactive man in one of them that clearly had intentions to outer-glow me. how long do we have to bear this?
It's definitely dangerous to be near them.
Do you know how much the cost, w.w.?
excuse me, how much THEY cost?
Painter, this blog is the best. I only feel sorry for the people whose work goes unliked. It's honest though. And I think it's a great open forum.

i don't know how much they cost. i didn't look at the checklist. doesn't he also show w/emmanuel perrotin?
He was in the Saatchi painting show this past year....how did that happen???? Mystery.

I am with you on the bile drizzling. That space has a storm coming that's way overdue.
oh I am not feeling bad for Jin. He is doing okay.
WW are you saying being at ZF is more prestigious than painternyc?
ZF hates me.
no, of course not, painter. i'm just saying that i'm sure jin wouldn't cry in a corner just because his peers don't like his work. heeee haw
i say bile!
i like ZF. he is my friend. i just want to do drip bile on something right away. plus i don't like this show.
he hires lots of guys to do these paintings.
They appear to have been manufactured by an army of pre-pubescents on cheap acid.
Ciao,
Edna
