  3. Anymore, I'm more interested in anything I see by this artist that is NOT a silhouette. But I haven't seen the show at the Whitney. What do those who've seen it think?

  4. there is a nice view of the installation on the whitney website, but i havent seen the show. Also long write-up and cover image in AiA's October issue.

most of the images to me seem to 'easy' that is, using stereotyped gut-reaction stuff to get a quick impact vs. more thoughtful and original images which might have more long term effects. but maybe actual effect is not what this artist is going for... see, the cartoony stuff makes me doubt its sincerity.

But, this one painting on the blog immediately made me think "Darfur", a current crisis which is overshadowed by all this pat 'antebellum South' sillouette stuff. (end of pointless rant)

  5. Its weird because I havent been all gung ho to go to the whitnery. I guess cuz of the entry fee, having my pririties geared towards eating rather than culture - it really is the choice I make.

So that puts in high relief the subject matter. Like do you go to a movie you've seen before, even a remake, or do you take a gamble and see soemthing you havent seen?

In that way, because Kara walker's one theme, growing strange fruit, isinteresting, but at the same time, I am shallow, an seeing her work in a narrative vein, wonder what other stories she could tell. Not abandoning identity or racial identity but and yet telling another related story.

Is that fair to ask? Because I know people change, and so can I. But then would her fan base evapoate?
Not to say she should eb able to resolve this unresolvable, but judging from the New Yorker cover she did, I think she could try to separate out strands and develop more involved specific narratives rather than staying in the cloud of generalized amorphous or mythical - and that such an oscilation between the mythical and specific (more specific I ean) would in fact highlight or clarify whatever it is in fact she thinks she's doing.

And I might feel more inclined to pay to see it, not that I matter in the bigger picture.

It occurs to me that this may be the case, and that in fact the show might be good for me to see. On the other hand I am loath to take the chance, based on past work and the aforementioned New Yorker cover with its formal flaws and non specific though topical ambiguity. Gericault's Raft of the Medusa for example, was very specific, and referencing it (without being it), though a time honored device, makes the Hurricaine Katrina reference (rooftops, black people) seem more like an view from inside the fish bowl rather than a personal work. In eeffect Kara is the institutional voice of the african american female, and this is persona she inhabits is antithetical to her idea of the mutable nature of the african identity, which she rejects yet uses, as a real player at the game of art, such as it is, and it is.

In the same way, this particular painting, probably most likely a slave in flight (what else?) is annoyingly topical (aren't we all?) and yet totally obtuse (What the fuck?)
Which leads me to my final analysis that htis is a fucking funny painting. And it totally sucks.
WHich leads me to re-evaluate the last image, which is that the heaviness (impasto/filled in) of the painting detracts from the humor - or in fact that it is not heavy enough (go big, go real heavy) and that formal qualities enhance my perception of intent and affirm my interpretation, we are all complicit, amen.

  6. i always thought of the silouhettes as a formal device, essentially as throwaway as a third grade art project. The real work to me was the imagery itself, and that the silouhettes called attention to that like a stage hand who wears black, but nonetheless changes the scenery.

I'm not sure how the sketching functions except as a nod tot eh conventions of craft and the hand of the artist, with its sensitivity, pathos, empathy, contingency, and cultural or genetic memory, tremors, palsy and ultimate demise.

Its ultimately a sort of anachronism, and that;s what rules out 3d models, industrial process (laser etching/stenciling, cnc routing). I find that somewhat limiting although it does add to the brand (Martha Stewart doesn't do Chinese out of the box).

Because like all great artists, kara is heavily branded, it makes for an interesting dialectic as I say when she is also dealing with identity.

  8. I seen it. Between the crowds and amount (many) of works on display, it was tough finding a viewing rythm, thus leaving me feeling a bit overwhelmed. Still worth checking out.

And a suggestion regarding museum addmission fees: if you are a frequent museum visitor, invest in an Association of American Museums membership. Its a flat yearly rate, and gets you (plus 1 guest) into any museum in this glorious nation of ours. We use our card all over town, except NYC MOMA, they dont accept it. We end up saving money in the end...

    ReplyDelete
  9. I think I saw this show when it was back in Paris.

I kind of adore Kara's silohettes. They are DEFINATELY a formal device, sure, but only one that enforces and adds to an already loopily complex subject matter. They are spatial and creepy and old fashioned and cute and she was the only person doing that sort of thing. Emphasis through elimanation.

That said, it can/could become a crutch? A trick? But I am not at all worried when I watch those unbelievable videos of hers. There she is taking her silouhettes to bigger and badder realms, and zip, she tells all sorts of stories in them.

  10. @It isn't surprising that African americans across the country feel pain for the victims of this disasterWhen people feel pain, they want to find someone to blame. Trhere is no doubt that it adds to the challenge facing us. But the real story is going to be what it always is: )What is really being done about education? about jobs? About/]=$ housing?"

    ReplyDelete
  11. Correction, NYC MOMA does recognize the AAM membership.

    ReplyDelete
  12. ok cool all kinds of stories. But I definitely think that if you are going to put the 2005 purchase of Ryan McGuiness prints in the MOMA coat check area (no shit) Then it is a fair comparison to the MOMA'S Kara Walker exhibit, which aren't really all that good (suck ass). Like Sigmar Polke is waaaaay better, but maybe its just that hes more ambiguous and I cannnnn't read the suckiness of them.

or maybe I have a tin ear. I'm totally down with that.

The upshot being I'm a culture whore.

The Giants won BTW. Great game. And I like the broncos because of my grandpa.

So I'm going to the Whitney to see why the MOMA doesn't have any good Kara Walker's. I am definately intrigued.

I'm getting a j-o-b just for the entry fee (though a museum membership is an interesting concept that I've entertained in the past).

What can be more authentically other than an otherness by the other, herself? Yet, every piece of the cake given by the master comes with a double/edged blade. The afrikanners are prompt in saying "you can take a black man from the bush, but you can't take the Bush from the Blac man."

Still it feels better to the puritan mind if you have to work for your ego.

I was thinking about life and its vicissitudes for some reason - catchy phrase.

... automatically, worn out by the gloomy day and by the perspective of a sad tomorrow, I put in my mouth a spoonful of tea in which I had softened a piece of the madeleine.... A delicious pleasure overtook me, isolated, disconnected from any idea about its cause. It immediately made life’s vicissitudes indifferent to me, life’s disasters became innocuous, its brevity illusory, in the same way that love operates, filling me with a precious essence: or, rather, this essence was not in me, it was me.

  22. I always believed that "everyone is complicit" thing. My catholic guilt. But lately Ive been thinking it's just another piece of mind control. The only complicity they get from me is that which they steal.

Fulani told me that her grandfather refused to speak for 10 years. Or maybe he just couldnt. I said you must be proud that your people have survived such oppression thruout the tragic history and she said not really. All I know she said is, there is just so much pain.

There is just so much pain. How do you heal the pain?

  25. the obvious answer is that it heightens the drama of the image - unlike the rockwell kent, who is on some kind of heroic kick. Another association I have is Lots wife being turned into a pillar of salt.

I'm sure this kind of historicism comforts the status quo, ensconced in wood paneled wonderkammerer or whatever. Flicker, brief candle!

  27. I like Walker’s silhouettes but this stuff doesn’t quite get there for me. Is this one of those mid 90s early works? I couldn’t find it on the Whitney site (or was I in too much of a hüry?) Anyway the non-silhouette stuff just seems to underline what a killer app the silhouette is in the circumstances.

Seeing everything in black and white, keeping the details in the dark, cutting out the big picture, the history/sex/nursery/plantation/myth slavery for a pasting and a pin-up, the class project on guilt framed emancipation of the picture space for the white cube and the black figure ground down for the cotton pickin wool over the eyes of the public ennui number won, man baby.

I guess everyone gets it and gives it – unless your name is Epaminondas (http://www.sterlingtimes.org/epaminondas.htm)and you still can’t quite forgive it.

But it’s the elegance and the eloquence of the form that are hard to escape for the viewer; and I wonder if not a little for the artist as well by now? The recent collages and animations are nice footnotes but you sense she’s not really going to go too far with the animation thing, without getting into too much drama, and the contemporary collages could be anyone’s.

So silhouettes are hard to break away from, once broken into to, a tar baby for the gifted draughtsperson and I know she’s starting to combine them with projected and fuller backdrops and I’m wondering when she’ll let her impressive talent with line start to wander a little more into the dark, pick out more than edges and make way for more color.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Why is this woman carrying the baby with its head down?

Several explanations come to mind QQ:

    1) It records some obscure episode from the literature, since lost.

    2) She is trying out some new fangled sling for carrying the child, said to more efficiently distribute the weight across the shoulders, correctly deliver the child beneath the breasts. However an unforeseen drawback is that any sudden twist to the torso – such as casting dramatic looks behind – promptly deposits the child on the ground.

Our picture captures this exciting moment.

    3) Yes it is not the way an infant is traditionally comforted! Boo hoo to you! But this is a new mother, determined to do things her own way, willing to flout convention in these things!
    Emancipation or what?
We give her a C for creative and a week to fall in line.

    4) Okay, she’s in a hüry, she’s on the run, it’s a wilderness that can smudge a gal’s hair! So she grabbed the heir wrong end up just this once. Everyone is allowed one mistake. And what with waste erupting both ends so frequently, who’s to say which will prove friendlier?

Don’t knock it if you haven’t tried it.

    5) The child is of course feeding upon the mother’s right, unusually pendulous, breast. Even though discreetly veiled, the mother cannot help but nervously look around to see if anyone has noticed. The breast then swings unsupported, and the infant shows uncanny suppleness, not to say determination, in following it right under her arm.

She wonders if there’s a side-show act in this.

    ReplyDelete
  29. she's out of her mind with fear, I believe is the implication (a mother tendst to look after a child over all else, unless its the master's child, then one might be ambivalent about it).

I;m starting to see the connection to the last painting after all.

  31. After some thinking...

I now know what bothers me generally about this work: I sense so much overpowering anger in these works, that I am afraid to directly address the race issues they refer to. I feel shut out of the conversation the artist pretends to engage in, since anything I have to say will be deemed from the "white male perspective" (as if that is one thing).

In this conversation, not just the race card, but all the cards are on one side of the table, and I just can't play. As with most message-based art, this comes at us with such a goddam heavy-handed rightousness that the viewer (this viewer at least) is only allowed to admire or pay homage to it, but not address its underlying concerns or artistic merits.

No more thinking... where's the advil...

Tuh use duh cuh-loquial we's all in nit tu-get huh. Youse a racist no mattuh whut cullah yo skin is.

Shirley Jackson wrote a story "The Lottery" - first published in harper's magazine (which instantly conjures up the sort of 1800's nostalgia brand for me in a way - Mark Twain and all that- which Kara uses to sugar coat the pill (though I can tell you sucked on it too long, I know I have)

ALso there's a story by Ursula K Leguin about a Utopian society that exists at the price of having to live with a child being tortured perpetually in the basement somewhere.

    Walk away from the waterboard.

  38. I don’t find Walker’s silhouette stuff all that angry actually. ‘Black humor’ springs to mind – predictably - but filtered through dated children’s illustration and comic strips it seems playful as much as provocative. A bit like say, Angela Carter’s Company of Wolves.

I get the sense she’s using race and slavery to talk about other things, history and myth and childhood superstition. I mean it’s definitely in the mix, but not, like full on ANGER!.

And the sexual stuff always looks like contemporary concerns projected onto black slave stereotypes, to me.

Maybe that’s why some older black artists object to it – because it’s not angry or direct enough – it gets too cute with history, when it should be tracking that stuff a lot further forward.

But I like the way it seeps into these other areas.

  39. Black Legacy Images intent is to promote normally difficult dialog between races through sharing debasing images of America's history. In the course of this dialog, Black Legacy Images ultimate aspiration is to have all Americans embrace America's abhorrent history, which would allow America's entire history to be told.

i was going to say in my last post--before the earthquake rattled and i hit enter in case I had to run--my experience is that the pain does not go away. it is not healed. you just learn to live with it. so in these works. you can twist it and poke it and try to make it mean something else.

  60. JpegCritic - what are your thoughts on the Thomas Demand?

    ReplyDelete
  61. Demand’s model-making has stepped back a little from more obvious materials and techniques with this series, and I keep wondering when he’s going to include figures. But they still have that weird space/volume thing, especially the close ups of the desk tops.

The Yellow Cake/WMD theme which comes with this stuff – based on a notorious African embassy in Rome – I suppose is meant to echo the artifice – one big conspiracy, right? Only the embassy is real – there is such a place – so the level of authenticity is not strictly ‘Yellow Cake’ or bullshit and I couldn’t really go along with Demand’s demands there.

Unless the equation is really, diplomacy = lies, which seems fair enough, but kind of spoils the specifics of this embassy.

    (this in JPEG's absence)

Perhaps an effort to meat up the content when simulacra has been explored (as you stated JpegCritic) the gee wiz factor overrides in a very self evident way. But didn't really appreciate the politicalticing up of the Simpsons halloween tonight either. I have similar feeling towards Kara Walker in general - im neither here or there with it. While normally S&M imagery leads me into the work hers locks me out. Maybe my Guilt and Shame o meter is just set to off.

  65. Why go extreme on quantitative analysis? People need a lot of information in order to be successful on equity investment. Not all people have the necessary information. There is an asymmetry in information between counter parties in the stock exchange. Some people make money because of the asymmetry; others lose money because of the asymmetry. Engagements with the enemy may be thought of as "symmetric" if friendly and enemy forces have similar types of forces and capabilities, or "asymmetric" if forces and/or capabilities are significantly dissimilar. Asymmetric engagements with the enemy can create decisive advantages and be extremely lethal, especially if the force being attacked is not prepared to defend itself. Similarly, the joint force must be shielded against an enemy's asymmetric attack.

  71. most peopl need to seek a inhibitory field which emanates from the mobile tips of elongating stolons of colonial hydroids to be identified and analyzed. It extends proximally with decreasing intensity for about 400–700 m and ensures that branching sites occur at appropriate distances along the stolon. The local strengths of inhibition within the field have been measured with a new method which permits high temporal and spatial resolution. Kineticstudies reveal three characteristics. First; inhibition decays. rather rapidly after removal of its source. The Half life is about 30 min. Second, loss of inhibition immediately triggers initiation of future tip formation. "Third, restoration and spreading of inhibition are slow processes, which take 8–24 h to recover 90% of the originul inhibitory levels. In order to keep feeling stuff or something/

  85. is it painted with ladies make-up products? looks a little revlon. i used to think that women were truly the unknown painters with their incredible daily mixing of color to supplant mood and shape, painting their own faces, nails daily, unbelievable. I wanted to do portraits of some of them with the same make-up products but never did. Maybe now someone will. Have you seen some old ladies cake it on, impasto masters (slightshock). This was all years ago. Borrowed my then girls lipsticks (got in trouble) and did the draw on the mirror thing, superglide and such color like an oil pastel gone crazy. You can really get some amazing colors at the counter, amazing colors really, but will they last on canvas, no, and who in the hell can afford them, so much for so little. Loreal has a really bizarre art science color research prize each year, last time i looked which was a while back some japanese scientist won by discovering that the color in butterfly wings is caused from the way light is refelcted in the molecular structure of them and not from any pigment. hence the new path for creating structural color in various nano-industries. the industry femme really is on the greatest quest for color in the contemporary world no doubt. painters buy and mix. But there are more women with color on their faces than the 'painters'. Waaaay more. Kara Walker paints like a female, that much can be said. No bad thing, just a thing to notice. Possibly. Here comes another wack comment from webthing. Most non-artist ex-girlfriends, when i encourage them to draw, end up for some reason drawing organic curves and then smudging it with their finger.

  89. i guess one persons shrill is another persons funny.

The question of transcendence. Refusal is multiform; transcendence is one. Faced by modern discontent and incited by it to bear witness, human history is quite simply the history of a radical refusal which invariably carries transcendence within itself, which invariably tends towards self-negation. Although only one or two aspects of this refusal are ever seen at a time, this can never successfully conceal the basic identity of dictatorship by God, monarch, chief, class or organization. What idiocy it is to evoke an ontology of revolt. By transforming natural alienation into social alienation, the movement of history teaches us freedom in servitude: it teaches us both revolt and submission. Revolt has less need of metaphysicians than metaphysicians have of revolt. Hierarchical power, which has been with us for millennia, furnishes a perfectly adequate explanation for the permanence of rebellion, as it does of the repression that smashes rebellion.

  90. Being at the top means never losing your cool, not even when its not cool, or like when cool means dated. But if you can make it personal, like Takashi Murakami, who is so personal and autobiographical like when he uses mushrooms to represent his drug experiences as a teenage Yakuza. Murakami lost his right pinkey to a gangster tanto because he failed to make his quota, but he got the finger bqack and had it re-attached. But still, he lost some motor fucntion and feeling in the finger and that hurt a lot. Me, I'm a nobody, probably a narcissist, but not in an interesting way, just a pedantic way. My story isn't that interesting, I'm imagining my audience now, in a self reflexive modernist way, and also in a postmodernist contingent way. To the centre of the city where all roads meet, waiting for you,
To the depths of the ocean where all hopes sank, searching for you,
I was moving through the silence without motion, waiting for you,
In a room with a window in the corner I found truth.

In the shadowplay, acting out your own death, knowing no more,
As the assassins all grouped in four lines, dancing on the floor,
And with cold streel, odour on their bodies mad a move to connect,
But I could only stare in disbelief as the crowds all left.

I did everything, everything I wanted to,
I let them use you for their own ends,
To the centre of the city in the night, waiting for you.
To the centre of the city in the night, waiting for you.

  94. I see PNYC gets mentioned in this month’s AiA, courtesy of Ed Winkleman. He’s on a panel of popular art bloggers there, hosted by Plagens. Ed claims there are young painters that take what we say here to heart!

I don’t know whether that’s tragic or hilarious.

But Ed seems like an earnest kind of guy – apparently he posts every day!. I mean I know his site, but would I go there like EVERY DAY? What burning, thrilling issue(s) could need a post every single day? I guess he just likes posting stuff basically, but if you think about it, as a blogger, would you go to other blog sites every day? You’d never have time to post your own stuff if you did. Why would you expect others to come to yours so constantly? What matter would need this daily update?

I’m obviously in a minority since Ed and the other bloggers on the panel all get like a zillion hits an hour, leading the acute Plagens to pose the big one – Is There A Buck To Be Made Out Of This Stuff? Or What Good Does It Get You?

Ed is at least realistic enough to acknowledge that blogs come and go all the time, bloggers get bored or distracted, move on to other things. Blogs are not necessarily the road UP or the future.

With the drastic slowing of posts here, I wonder if this exhaustion isn’t catching up with Painter and Diesel? On the other hand maybe we would do better to adjust to a slower tempo.

  95. cap on the one hand timing is everything, and on the other floodgates are floodgates. responding to the condition of history, it would be best that these young painters don't listen so intently. or at least glow in non-acceptance, because that's how it starts in every pack in every animal. painting is a hard life to choose, but an easy one to accept. complusion is paramount. reflecting the times, no. if you refelct back the political ugliness of the world to the same poor drones/middleclass slaves/upperclass guiltyparties who are forced to eat it everywhere else they mediaglance, of course you will confuse yourself with the role art has. i still believe the role of the artist can at times be to show us something natural and valuable, within the techsphere or not, and how this is ongoing. political art can not be the only way out of the current, it's shortsightedness is tiring and often best solved with other more proactive means. but lets not discount the power of the sublime image, sorry. something other than the standard complicit "you're guilty for destruction, human" catchphrase is often the enervating alternative needed to put people in a position to smile and keep working. people know this. undying robot's will love us and adjudicate soon anyway, when the human was a blip on the cosmic spark. supreme efficiency and reason seems to be the goal of all life, WITH A BUCKET OF DECORATIVE ASPECTS ALONG THE WAY, thanks to the sex factor, but like someone said earlier (by the way i really like the poems and lyrics posted here) (wo)man did not make the computer, whatever electromagnetic manipulative charge that made all life (including(wo)man) is making the computer, get it? the human hand is a conduit for a spark we have searched in vanity for, yet it is still there. undeniable. all the beckett's waiting for... but it's already there. waiting for the right word to describe it might be more apt. so 'god' was crap. ok no problem. let's just go with hal. we are only a notch on the scale. but if we hold out long enough maybe we might just get to chill with our own r2d2's. Just ask Natasha Vita-Moore and the transhumanists, they seem to have died down a little...

and when i wanna cool down

  97. god is an idea of something with a pure and untainted sense of justice and reason, unlike ourselves, carrying our higher sense of morality in our more recent cerebral cortexes, but haunted by the prehistoric beast that still dwells within (the ancient brain reptilian pineal gland, i mean we call our old brain a gland of all things, and its sitting atop your own spine being the very tainted router for all the higher ideals that have to pass through it to the body). Original sin. That's why I love the appendix, this stale organ that was once vital, sitting there inside your body in the evolutionary waiting room (those who haven't had it removed) and it's like "hey guys, remember me?". And we're like "nope, dude, totally don't know what you're talking about". The herbivores are like it was for breaking down leaves because we're not meat eaters, our stomach acids are weak and our teeth are blunt, and the carnivores are like it was for breaking down raw meat, if you don't shutup i'll show you what i mean.

When you let your mind wander beyond the boundary of sanity, and then you come back, forced because the toaster went off and you have to go and spread the peanut butter, it gives you a complex appreciation of the absurdity of daily life, and if possible, you understand how to flow with the great cosmic passage, and maybe in your own way, you find a way to imbue what you paint with that vortex the mind can wander into. Thats what i'm lookin for. Sometimes. Most times. Too much is too much. Don't forget to wipe your ass. Sit under a tree more often. Go on a picnic. Scientific reality remains disjunct from daily life, complex is the negotiation between the intellect and the laughter. But one day, the idea of god might be possible, our old friend hal. But as we've been shown, even he might be plagued by the same disastrous ends of eternally upgrading the same piece of hardware (ie/ evolution). Redundant parts, the selfish jealous and proud beast, a real spanner in the works. But futurefear is as old as the hills, it always turns out a lot different.

I've been looking at a lot of drawings by modernist architects recently, the 1939 exhibition of a city in the year 2000, they banished the decoration in favour of clean lines to avoid the folly of the upper class, and created a sterile concrete world to be skated and graffiti'd over, the funniest thing is not one future plan had much of a garden in it. What is the reality now, green is a marketers dream. Green and blue are the future equity. So they were wrong, and so was Kubrick. And so am i.

  100. god is a concept by which we measure our pain--i feel like screaming--

Grace, a piece of God transplanted into man, outlived its Donor. Secularized, abandoning theology for metaphysics, it remained buried in the individual's flesh like a pace-maker, an internalised mode of government. When Freudian imagery hangs the monster Superego over the doorway of the ego, its fault is not so much facile oversimplification as refusal to search further for the social origin of constraints. (Reich understood this well.) Oppression reigns because men are divided, not only among themselves, but also inside themselves. What separates them from themselves and weakens them is laos the false bond that unites them with power, reinforcing this power and making them choose it as their protector, as their father.

"Mediation", says Hegel, "is self-identity in movement." But what moves can lose itself. And when he adds "it is the moment of dying and becoming", the same words differ radically in meaning according to the perspective in which they are placed: that of totalitarian power or that of the total man.

As soon as mediation escapes my control, every step I take drags me towards something foreign and inhuman. Engels painstakingly showed that a stone, a fragment of nature alien to man, became human as soon as it became an extension of the hand by serving as a tool (and the stone in its turn humanised the hand of the hominid). But once it is appropriated by a master, an employer, a ministry of planning, a management, the tool's meaning is changed: it deflects the action of its user towards other purposes. And what is true of tools is true for all mediations.

Just as God was the supreme arbiter of grace, the magnetism of the governing principle always draws to itself the largest possible number of mediations. Power is the sum of alienated and alienating mediations. Science (scientia theologiae ancilla) converted the divine fraud into operational information, organised abstraction, returning to the etymology of the word: ab-trahere, to draw out of.

As to the post a few back re: attraction. You have let the cat out of the bag. Did you know this one: Anti-war protesters are actually attracting the idea of more war. The moment it becomes confrontational you're attracting what you are trying to rid off. You are giving your detractors reason to react.
I've often thought how you stop war.
I can only come up with stop fighting. But who listens to that kind of logic. People don't want to hear that. I mean where is the submission in that. Where's the right? Where's the wrong? Where's the good? Where's the bad? Where is the Ugly?

Me and the little girl kinda laughed because we prefer to enjoy the misery. It all seems to be around us whether we laugh or cry.

The dialectic of decay and supersession is the dialectic of dissociated and unitary space-time (l). The new proletariat carries within itself the realisation of childhood, which is its space-time (2). The history of separations is slowly resolved at the end of "historic" history (3). Cyclical time and linear time. - Lived space-time is space-time in transformation, and the role's space-time is that of adaptation. - The function of the past and of its projection into the future is to outlaw the present. Historical ideology is the screen that comes between the will to individual self-realisation and the will to construct history; it prevents them joining up and merging (4). The present is the space-time to be constructed; it entails the correction of the past.

So to the Exchange, and thence home to dinner with my brother, and in the afternoone; to Westminsiter hall, and there found Mrs. Lane, and by and by by agreament we met at the parliament stairs (in my way down to the boat who should meet us but my lady jemimah, who saw me lead her but said nothing to me of her, though I ought to speak to her to see whether she would take notice of it or no) and off to Stangate and so to the king’s Head at Lambeth marsh, and had variety of meats and drinks, but I did so towse her and handled her, but could get nuthing more from her though I was, very near it; but as wanton and bucksome as she is she dares not adventure upon the business, in which I very much commend and like her. One could hardly maintain the courage to be individual, to speak with one’s own voice, for the years in which one could complacently accept oneself as part of an elite by being a radical were forever gone. A. man knew that when he dissented, he gave a note upon his life which could be called in any year of overt crisis. No wonder then that these have been the years of conformity and depression. A stench of fear has come out of every pore of American life, and we suffer from a collective failure of nerve. The only courage, with rare exceptions, that we have been witness to, has been the isolated courage of isolated people.

  140. Interestingly enough, Stipe and the boys wrote this song after attending a policy debate tournament. They were so impressed with the speed at which policy debaters can make coherent and strong arguments (to those not submerged in debate, it often sounds like gunshots). Hence the frantic pace of the song.

Stipe also uses some policy debate terms in the song, such as net, which is a stock debate arg that is used to argue that the social net, as it widens, gets bigger holes that allows more people to slip through. (Incidentally, the lyrics are "net", right? ... right., not "neck" - even Stipe admits that) and "tournament of lies refers to the practice of assigning policy debate teams various positions, regardless of their personal agreement with the argument they are making.

She has made a conscious choice to make art that is not as important esthetically; while I love gazing at her watercolors, I know that her real intended meaning is in the silhouettes and writing. It is were the power is and I accept that. Great show to see, but you will need a long time to look at everything. As far as the fee - SUNY PURCHASE students are admitted for FREE!
