Im into turps. THat knotty pine scent.

The editor of Hallmark magazine (i just got dejavu writing this - something about being criticized for being negative) was explaining x-mass trees this morning. They got pressed for time and missed a few species.

But you have to rosin up the bow and get those tin soldiers marching.

This seems pretty uptight as a whole. Could you do some coke in a seedy dive with this work or would it be wine bars and macrobiotic steamed kale for din din?

Part of the problem is the lack of space around the figures. If its supposed to be attenuated in the wan sallow light of a waning empire, shouldnt we be receeding away from pluto, instead of hovering breathlessly in the wings?]

Shaped canvas?

Im no expert, but this seems to have branched from the same style as the Currier and Ives print empire. Only instead of evolving into homo sapiens, it evolved into caspar and the the friendly ghosts.

I think this artist should go to the desert and find their spirit animal and then come back to town and mellow out.

Hearts and thoughts they fade fade away

What a smashing, positively dashing
Spectacle: the Ascot op'ning day.
At the gate are all the horses
Waiting for the cue to fly away.
What a gripping, absolutely ripping
Moment at the Ascot op'ning day.
Pulses rushing! Faces flushing!
Heartbeats speed up! I have never been so keyed up!
And second now They'll begin to run. Hark!
A bell is ringing, They are springing Forward Look!
It has begun...! What a frenzied moment that was!
Didn't they maintain an exhausting pace?
'Twas a thrilling, absolutely chilling Running of the

Give a man a free house and he'll bust out the windows
Put his family on food stamps, now he's a big spender
no food on the table and the bills ain't paid
'Cause he spent it on cigarettes and P.G.A.
They'll turn us all into beggars 'cause they're easier to please
They're feeding our people that Government Cheese

Give a man a free lunch and he'll figure out a way
To steal more than he can eat 'cause he doesn't have to pay
Give a woman free kids and you'll find them in the dirt
Learning how to carry on the family line of work
It's the man in the White House, the man under the steeple
Passing out drugs to the American people
I don't believe in anything, nothing is free
They're feeding our people the Government Cheese

Decline and fall, fall down baby
Decline and fall, said fall way down now
Decline and fall, fall down little mama
Decline and fall, decline and fall

Give a man a free ticket on a dead end ride
And he'll climb in the back even though nobody's driving
Too ******* lazy to crawl out of the wreck
And he'll rot there while he waits for the welfare check
Going to hell in a handbag, can't you see
I ain't gonna eat no Government Cheese

i have been really into the Victorian thing - pink, glitter and fluff but more in touch with the darker, guilty, bloodier transgendered side.

it is a very interesting benchmark for examining and understanding class culture and sexuality.. with Rome being maybe second only in more "Butchy" - i find barely clad young muscle men revolting.

deep inside everyone has a little girl who is dieing to spend evenings in the powder-room and at tea partys.

Its been mentioed before - and in relation to the JC - people who do figuarative work SHOULD, morally speaking, spend more time drawing.

Heads are easy to compose, being roughly symetrical. Figures are harder.
But thats not the message. But why the repetitive message - face face face face.

Is the place. Then we may proceed leasurely along the baroque arabesque to the center.

Im for a psychological examination. The style isnt that developed, and thus I smell CONCEPT.

Ergo: cogito sum

It's watercolor on canvas, not turpentine. It reminds me of marbled end papers. The neutral colored pieces look like Dali's animation sequence stills. The skin transitions from smooth to stained and dimpled have a fresco feel, sculpted like academic plaster models left out in the rain. I guess that is romantic. I don't know if I mind. How do they look in person?

ok nice try cupcake. Lets go with something a little more defined like the idea of fantasy as reality, where the lines are blurred and you'd chew your own toungue off and choke on it than enjoy petit fours with the land barons of yore.

Chicken a la king.

I think its about inhabiting the state of the real.

Heres one for william saphire - where did "tracing an arabesque" come from?

With any luck you will have sent the children to bed before Slaughterhouse " Task of Blood, Brian Hill's strangely beautiful film about an Oldham abattoir. Hill had been inspired by the saying: 'If slaughterhouses had glass walls everyone would be a vegetarian.' Consider this your window, he said, and 'when it's over, ask yourself: 'Do I feel like eating meat again?" This pitched the documentary as a kind of activist shock therapy, but it turned out to be far more subtle and intriguing than that. For one thing he'd created a dance of death out of the mechanics of slaughter. Hanging upside down on the conveyor belt, the pigs formed a kind of chorus line, legs jerking in reflexive spasms. Another pirouetted on a hook, its nose tracing an arabesque through the brilliant crimson blood on the floor.

no-where-man said...

omg did someone say - "fantasy as reality"? just look at Colette and her show up right now at Vivian Horan Fine Art.

This is appealing and sweet and a wee bit mysterious in the same way all those Victorian inspired ruffled blouses at Anthropologie and Banana Republic are right now. Thousand Points - I agree. Seems like a perfect convergence of art and fashion. It'll be interesting to see where this artist goes next.

zipthwung said...

And now a word from john latham:

But the person becomes more than an animal because in there, there is the connection to a language, a way of coding the information, so it becomes consistent. That gives a rational individual which we recognise as the social person in the society which we have at the moment. What we also recognise is that there are people who invent things which nobody’s ever thought of before. And the intuition which goes to that is very mysterious because it’s never thought out, it just happens. Like "Why don’t people do it like this? Why isn’t this done?" And I put on the explanation for that in a book which is orientated towards the person, like that.

Me, Im more into aphasia.

one of my roomies is in uber fashion - he said "victorian" is not in. it is imperialist/decadent french/russian like louis the whatever and it is a reaction to the just passing mimalism.

Not the Whitney Bi Nor the Armory seemed to follow these trends.

Me, i never mentioned this painting just the theme... im not sure what that says.

christian reese lassen

thanks for reminding me. Probably one of my favorite web sites.

Oliver sacks of "Awakenings" fame wrote about how animals think in pictures and that autistic people think more like animals - are easily startled by sudden movements, where normal people are less knee jerk in response.

I wonder if fashion is an outward sign of ones ability to perceive/cogitate - and thus survive. I dont think this is an original idea - but if you see someone dressed anomalously _bright colors or flair like a "mean people suck" button - well isnt that a reason to shun them?

In shunning we dissasociate ourselves from the other - "contaminated" with genetic traits that might correspond to poor hand-eye coordination.

Survival of the fittest.

And in that light, the shaman is kept around as a reminder - the buffon of the species. A teaching model. A spare gene pool should the existing petri dish fail to pan out.

In that sense we might say there is a growing class of such individuals, and that, professionalized, they might constitute the deflationary counter genre of the polar opposite - the arian fashionista.

Not sure where Im going with that.

of course

and who could forget:

TRON Guy

You got your joe coleman...
i dunno. Joe coleman allways seems too fussy to me - like hes TRYING to be outsider.

elfwood has a lot of thre stuff that reminds me of Ted Mineo and 31 GRAND artists as well - if ted is gonna make people really angry, then some of 31 GRAND should make them alternately sucicidal and homocidal. Talk about kitch.

Me personally? I dont care. I got a big poster of Gandalf at my parents house - got it when I was in third grade I think.

So if you want to talk constructed identities, I think I was pretty self aware at an early age. But then I could never construct an identity I liked.

Thats why I post anonymously here - It makes me feel empowered and more real in a way. Like I can just say what I want and if the person on the other end dies, its ok, because I didnt really know them, or even care, because scent is really the only thing that makes me feel anything.

The other day I had some clam chowder and the smell was intense. i almost forgot I was in Brooklyn.
I think I must have looke a bit maudlin because the next thing you know someone has to pipe up loudly about how great the food is. I hate that shit.

hello tpol, in response to:
I would love to hear a considered defense of the propagation of the “Victorian thing” o-where-man and “victorianesque figures” heidilolatheayatollah .... Is this simply an example of the convergence of art and fashion?

I think artists are essentially autobiographical, the victorian thing taps into the over abundance of wealth vs poverty, our fascination with the nouveau rich and rise (or decline?) of the American Empire. Victorian figures say "elegant goth" but they also may be tapping into a metaphor for our position in the world and everything victorian represents, sterotypically speaking. Let them eat cake, off with their heads and all that.

Basically--painting the gotti family would be tacky and boring, dress it up, and paint some ribbons n hats, same thing.

It is a nice look for movies, I wonder how it will age in contemporary art...hard to say. Will it look doubly dated? trite? or will it still be as grand as any historical movie today?

Guess it depends towards what end the artist is utilizing it for.

Freakin' made my day at the library.

Utilitarianism (from the Latin utilis, useful) is the ethical doctrine that the moral worth of an action is solely determined by its contribution to overall utility. It is thus a form of consequentialism.

Consequentialism refers to those moral theories that hold that the consequences of a particular action form the basis for any valid moral judgment about that action.

Pragmatism, as a school of philosophy, is a collection of many different ways of thinking. Given the diversity among thinkers and the variety among schools of thought that have adopted this term over the years, the term pragmatism has become all but meaningless in the absence of further qualification....

...Some pragmatists disagree with the view that beliefs represent reality, and instead argue that beliefs are dispositions which qualify as true or false depending on how helpful a disposition proves in accomplishing the believer's goals. For this type of pragmatist it is only in the struggle of intelligent organisms with the surrounding environment that theories acquire meaning, and only with a theory's success in this struggle that it becomes true.

In Marx's critique of political economy, any labor-product has a value and a use value, and if it is traded as a commodity in markets, it additionally has an exchange value, most often expressed as a money-price.

Chomsky: The film opens with Galadriel speaking. "The world has changed," she tells us, "I can feel it in the water." She's actually stealing a line from the non-human Treebeard. He says this to Merry and Pippin in The Two Towers, the novel. Already we can see who is going to be privileged by this narrative and who is not.

Zinn: Of course. "The world has changed." I would argue that the main thing one learns when one watches this film is that the world hasn't changed. Not at all.

Chomsky: We should examine carefully what's being established here in the prologue. For one, the point is clearly made that the "master ring," the so-called "one ring to rule them all," is actually a rather elaborate justification for preemptive war on Mordor.

Zinn: I think that's correct. Tolkien makes no attempt to hide the fact that rings are wielded by every other ethnic enclave in Middle Earth. The Dwarves have seven rings, the Elves have three. The race of Man has nine rings, for God's sake. There are at least 19 rings floating around out there in Middle Earth, and yet Sauron's ring is supposedly so terrible that no one can be allowed to wield it. Why?

Chomsky: Notice too that the "war" being waged here is, evidently, in the land of Mordor itself — at the very base of Mount Doom. These terrible armies of Sauron, these dreadful demonized Orcs, have not proved very successful at conquering the neighboring realms — if that is even what Sauron was seeking to do. It seems fairly far-fetched.

Zinn: And observe the map device here — how the map is itself completely Gondor-centric. Rohan and Gondor are treated as though they are the literal center of Middle Earth. Obviously this is because they have men living there. What of places such as Anfalas and Forlindon or Near Harad? One never really hears anything about places like that. And this so-called map casually reveals other places — the Lost Realm, the Northern Waste (lost to whom? wasted how? I ask) — but tells us nothing about them. It is as though the people who live in these places are despicable, and unworthy of mention. Who is producing this tale? What is their agenda? What are their interests and how are those interests being served by this portrayal? Questions we need to ask repeatedly.

Friends, did you get some silver

What did you bring me, my dear friends, to keep me from the gallows pole?
What did you bring me to keep me from the gallows pole?

I couldn't get no silver - I couldn't get no gold
You know that we're too damn poor to keep you from the gallows pole
Hangman hangman - hold it a little while
I think I see my brother coming - riding many a mile
Brother, did you get me some silver
Did you get a little gold?
What did you bring me, my brother, to keep me from the gallows pole?

Brother, I brought you some silver
I brought a little gold - I brought a little of everything
To keep you from the gallows pole
Yes, I brought you to keep you from the gallows pole

Hangman hangman - turn your head awhile
I think I see my sister coming - riding many a mile mile mile
Sister, I implore you - take him by the hand
Take him to some shady bower - save me from the wrath of this man
Please take him - save me from the wrath of this man

Hangman, hangman - upon your face a smile
Pray tell me that I'm free to ride
Ride for many a mile mile mile

Oh yes, you got a fine sister - she warmed my blood from cold
Brought my blood to boiling hot to keep you from the gallows pole
Your brother brought me silver - your sister warmed my soul
But now I laugh and pull so hard and see you swingin' on the gallows pole
