It isn't so easy to pull off that representational/abstract tightrope-walk, but he manages to do it. Pinch o' Baselitz, dash of Terry Winters, exploding heads, meaty paint chop = yum.
I prefer the paintings on Taylor's web site - they have a little more room to breathe. The site took an extra minute to find as there is a very different artist named Scott Taylor. This painting seems like something leaning up against the dumpster outside the painting studios at the end of the semester.
Reminds me of the x-files episode where this cloud of stinging gnats comes out of a prehistoric log. They have the embeded memeory of a creature that reconstitutes itself and wrecks havock on modern man.
I the same way, this painting uses recycled tropes to "deconstruct" a flemish painting and then "wreck havock" on modern man.
Still, im saying people know how to paint. THats not really the issue. I mean my issue.

It feels a little unresolved - and not in a "I couldnt see through my existential angst" kind of way, but more of a "I wanted to leave it unresolved so the composition would work" kind of way. Well it doesnt, for the above mentrioned reason.
WHich is not to say its too self conscious - you can never second guess yourself enough. Keep piling it up until you cant paint. thats the way to do it, and you allways got MTV. Dire straits man.

yawn, they are quoting soutine and dekooning. They are postmodern. Are you postmodern yawn? Or do you just need more oxygen? I am on my second cup of coffee. I dotn know ww or her husband because I live at the bottom of the ocean and they are sea otters.
WHen dk said that pollock "broke the ice" was it like "on the rocks" or just "neat"?
Does anybody want to have a conversation about the difference between the older and newer work? When Painter posted the older stuff it had a mixed reception because of use of photo sources. How did he get from there to here? Thanks Painter I like the idea of keeping up with artist's work.

Delacroix - raft of the medusa. MArk Kostabi - ship of fools. Kinkade - the sad clown series. Is Satchii a later day Cosimo di Medici? Ill be manning the watchtower.
I think what's interesting is that he seems to be painting 2 bodies of work simultaneously--the collages in paint--And the portraits with splattery faces. And then some that marry both. So hes got 2 ideas and he's bringing them together.
how does yawn's opinion warrant a death threat? I think this blog works best with both detractors and adulators..I wouldnt say this is student work but I also wouldnt compare him favorably to Soutine......
this artist works with gruesome and ugly, but not really in an enlightening way for me... In this image in particular I see him playing with an arthistorical reference in a venerating manner, much as Soutine seemed to do or even Bacon; really having a visual fuckfest through interpreting and exploring past aesthetics..illustrated most poignantly in the shivering splatter. I kind of find it similar to Bacon's pope(sorry for a tired reference)....but if that is the case, this methodology seems somewhat dated.

I see his approach to this subject matter slightly awkward - not so much in the way it is painted but in the subject matter he chooses to paint. I don't feel any conviction in his imagery.
