Speaking of Serra, Temple Grandin designs slaughterhouses. They force the animal to follow a path, like a drawing forces your eye to follow a contour.
When was the last time you did a blind contour drawing? I remember as a kid some kid telling me about contour drawing - picked it up from his dad. Thats like wanting to amputate your legs or something. Bunch of sickos out there.
Thanks Zip Death and the Maiden and the Three Ages of Women are old images based on even older images of Hecate and Tripartite goddesses. Interesting how the meanings change. And the art historical reading that Hecate carried ropes and a knife to "assist in childbirth" reads as a little naive. More darkness.
Death and the Maiden also the Maiden and the Crone used to be the same person. Medieval European art and cultural feminism both tried to clean that up. I guess new age people also do the same thing when they incorporate pagan archetypes. Just pointing to that. It's interesting how her work warps these old and older images. And in a dirty not cleaned up way.
this is lame drawing, i'm guessing the viagra comment means this is limp - I couldn't agree more. this looks sadly traced or something, seriously trace a few anatomy drawings with some variation of line, dark light, thick thin... i wish everyone would do something with skulls and masturbation so we can all get over the fact that it isn't dark.. if i found someone masturbating over a skull in my basement when i was 6 i would be traumatized.. this? not so much..
blind contour drawing is more about helping the eye to see rather than broad ambiguous gestures..like taking another route..can be helpful when learning how to make drawings not like this...
plus she totally skimped on the anus depiction. whats up with that?
@kelli, just curious as to why it's good that it reminds you of Schiele? as Schiele is every teenage art fan's favorite first artist (and therefore somewhat tired to reference), just wonderin bout that statement, maybe there's something behind the observation I'm not getting
Cooky I didn't say as good as Schiele. No Way. She seems like a disjunctive artist whose work is split into parts. The performances are totally separate and the drawings seem like sketches for something (but what?). Something about this both irritates and interests me. I wonder what it would be like to merge the two things together. What would the X-ray images be like in a performance? Some sort of heavy metal Day of the Dead thing? I dont get it and I usually get things. People say I remind them of Schiele sometimes but I get Klimt way more often.
Of course the answer to the riddle "what are these sketches for or of?" might just be they are for an art dealer to sell because you can't sell performances.

I meant blind contour drawing. Blind conte crayon contour drawing. Why not bind your feet while you are at it?

I prefer looking at Schiele's drawings...... is that because they're less "perfect"?
