Richard Phillips

  1. I'm somewhat suprised that artists can get away with this level of female objectification in their work these days, but it seems like Phillips has been doing something similar for a while. Maybe the tounge in cheek comicbook execution makes it ok to do it to such an extreme? I don't know.

Not one of my favorties. Seems like he could have said the same thing much more elegantly with a more abstract approach.

  19. NONSENSE?
Hey, man, you don't understand me. You listen to me. I'll enlarge your mind. I'm a poet-warrior in the classic
sense. I mean sometimes i'll, uh, well, you'll say hello to
me, right? And i'll just walk right by you, and i won't even
notice you. And suddenly i'll grab you, and i'll throw you in
a corner, and i'll say do you know that if is the middle
word in life? If you can keep your head when all about you are
losing theirs and blaming it on you, if you can trust yourself when
    all men doubt you

Crabs to the lot of you!

I huffed the fumes at Delphi man, I charged the crystals at Chaco Canyon right on the rim. You know me, you know what I stand for. I got your daisy dukes right here, put em up put em down, I dont care. Am I a bad man? Am I bad? You dont see me man, you dont see. You see yourself. Youre just a figment of my imaginary universe. I dont care, I've seen things you wouldnt believe. I have seen a snail crawling on a razors edge. that's my dream. That's not your dream.

  23. imageworship, I am sorry I don't remeber where I got this image from. I think I picked it because it was the most recent image I could find. But it is not a great example of his work. I will keep looking for his gallery site.

  25. Did you know that "if" is the middle of the word "life"?

le Art Nouveau really influenced the hippies, (anyone got some scholarship on that action?) and theres some connection to the soviet bloc animation thing - poster art and Blue Meanies and all that. I haven't delved into it but Wesselman and so on and so forth...

cant a guy just like a chick bro? And visa versa? I love it when I get the conch, I mean the feather.

    Let my pagans go.

  26. interesting that Richard Phillips lives in Marblehead,a snakepit of horribly tacky taffy'n'art

  27. I don't think this so much objectifies this woman

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm so sick and tired of Cactii being objectified! As a cactus, I find this painting particularly offensive. This is the "image" that young cactii have to look up to? I mean, isn't it 2006?

  29. This painting makes every rejection letter I ever received hurt even more.

  30. Apocalypse Now brings a tear? Eric White comes off as a little tongue in cheek 'emotional', or a prying therapist i have a little more faith in RP.

    ReplyDelete
  31. cmon, Eric White is illustrating an idea. Richard is painting an illustration...big conceptual difference.

    ReplyDelete
  32. YAAAA! Remind me never to look at an Eric White painting again! Suddenly RP's lookin' really good.

  34. Its weird how Juxtapose and LA art/Dali makes me feel like a teenager. I get all giggly and suddenly I find an ear, and there are ants on that ear. I mean thats where I'd rather be, conceptually.

  35. zip, paint that picture, I think you are on to something

  36. Everyone seems a bit uptight. The whole art world today is reflective, as always, of the world we live in, an America afraid to face itself, hiding in fake ambivilance, obfiscation, avoidence. Some artist are capturing this and someone is going to break out of this and powerfully express the current reality of fear we all fear.

  39. who can say know to the far-out-psychedelic-peyote sexy in the air.

zip: "The ear is like a canal, it's like an opening, little egress into another place...It's like a ticket to another world that he finds. If he hadn't found it, you know, he would have kept on going home and that would have been the end of it. But the fascination with this, once found, drew him into something he needed to discover and work through."

  40. No Warhol next time. No NY painter. NY painters are being ignored even by NY. Look at the Whitney. NY painting is a part of the scene not a probing comentary on the scene. It will be some Chinese painter who paints Bush not an American artist who paints Mao or Ossama. Ny remains the center of the art market but no longer the creative center of the art world.

  41. when i think AW i don't think 'painter' all the gold foil, films, social sculpture, happenings... i would love to see a jpg. crit of any one of his images - or 'morality'

  42. morality? Ok, 3/4 of the people here are Conservative with a capital C. Go away with your thumping please...we get enough every four years.

  43. The green cloud/smokey stuff looks really "Fart-ish". I think it's a painting about girls farting and still looking pretty... or maybe about an ex-girlfriend.

  48. What makes a weblog a weblog?
Fri, May 23, 2003; by Dave Winer. (harvard)

At Berkman we're studying weblogs, how they're used, and what they are. Rather than saying "I know it when I see it" I wanted to list all the known features of weblog software, but more important, get to the heart of what a weblog is, and how a weblog is different from a Wiki, or a news site managed with software like Vignette or Interwoven. I draw from my experience developing and using weblog software (Manila, Radio UserLand) and using competitive products such as Blogger and Movable Type. This piece is being published along with my keynotes at OSCOM and the Jupiter weblogs conference. And a disclaimer: This is a work in progress. There may be subsequent versions as the art and market for weblog software develops. Dave Winer, June 2003, Cambridge MA.

  50. I would argue the opposite. Then I would say that an imagined reality is every bit as real as the "experienced" one, at least qualitatively, because both are staged in the mind, real or not. When the mind is the medium, printers will no longer need ink.

  51. Oh it's so sad, so very very sad, there used to be real talk and understanding of the context and potential of an artists' work - and now just grammatically shitty half-thoughts of nothing. I was actually learning something from this blog and now it just feels like a chat room for mildly educated jaded riff raff. Yuck.

    Smell my ass.

    What a nice jpg.

How about that chiarascuro shading? Anyone? WOW.

Check this shit out - anyone know the artist? He did a lot of the Carlos Castaneda books. Low grade surrealism, but it influenced me as much as "Drawing the Marvel Way".

  55. grammer aside, i am sorry i thought this was about ny painters not a writing assignment, - out of curiosty what on here does not help understand the potental of an artists work? reads quite easy to me?

in fact you should read up i included "What makes a weblog a weblog?
Fri, May 23, 2003; by Dave Winer. (harvard)" as helper notes for Artblogs who wish to understand themselves as 'blogs' read it. - they are not books.

  56. I never had trouble making a pretty picture.

For example its fairly easy to buy a badger airbrush if you have the cash and then waste some paint on practice. Pretty soon you could be strenciling or freestyling the side of a van or someone's leather jacket.

In the seventies it was popular to paint vans - My friends and I called them "fantasy vans" and they often had a lifted roof. I think this comes out of hot rod culture, rat fink and vargas and all that. A popular scene was Lord of The Rings, which was HUGE to the egghead college population. People used to read, back in the day.

I'm more interested in what people have to say than how they express it, to the extent that the medium can be divorced from the message (see McCluhan) but also, its interesting to me to see on this blog and elsewhere people who bristle at the thought of addressing anything that is not explicitly IN the work as extraneous bullshit.

I used to think that - for example why talk about a work in its social an political context. But try holding an interesting conversation for ten years based on surface quality. Madness.

  59. Yeah I remember that Soho show. That landed him in the Kertess curated biennial. Those were interesting. Did anyone see his last show at Petzel where he cut that gallery down to this triangle shape?

It was strange but interesting. It served the paintings (such as they are) well. What I mean by that is the painting and the environment worked together. It was sort of like a big comic strip in a way.

Which is was some people say of Phillips, that he's not really a painter, more of a graphic designer.
