  2. Good to be back, painter. In the ether-space, not NYCspace. This work looks interesting - where does she show? It's like Max Ernst meets Alex Katz. Would love to see some in person...

I think she is in school at Columbia right now too.

  4. i am so sick of hearing about columbia!

  5. I am not interested in Columbia either. I just wanted to give BB clues as to where he/she could find her work.

  8. it looks more like fischl meets yuskavage to me than ernst meets katz but this is just from the website.

  9. When I first saw her work I thought Fischl.

  10. i was thinking yuskavage too. i have no idea what to make of these. could be a good sign or not? will have to withhold judgement until seeing it in person.

  11. hey not to go backwrads but re the columbia thing, is it possible we can discuss. it seems to be a topic. i am interested. is it a good school, actually? maybe it is?

  12. columbia is simply the hottest program around. With its legacy of Beat poet dropouts (One of whom, Gregory Corso, also attended the highly reccomended closed campus at Danemora, a top notch ivy-esque school) and radicalism (the may 1968 protests)it has a fine pedigree.
Need I mention the Van Dorens of Quizz Show fame? Note that it costs 64 thousand dollars to get a MFA there - oh the irony! Or that Gostbusters one AND two feature the univerity prominently? I love the ESP test scene, don't you? Altered States was also filmed there. AWESOME.

Recently Columbia has gotten a lot of press, and deservedly so - some of the best painters in the United States are studying there.

If the Greater NY show at PS1 was a parliament, I think you'd see "Columbiaistan" jerry mandered to include the courtyard and the snack bar.

  13. they were quite icky in person, but perhaps i missed what she is trying to do.

  14. I kind of like them on the Briggs Robinson website, but as ww said "they were quite icky in person" (I haven't seen them). One of my biggest pet peeves is when I see art online or in a reproduction that looks great from the jpeg or print but in person they don't look nearly as good. Good exapmle is Les Rogers' show now at Leo Koenig. Looks great on the website and the invitation! in person... eeeeh.

  15. Anon, we can discuss Columbia. I think it is a good school. I like artist work that have studied there. But it is pretty pricey. If you can afford it go for it. Than you can be a NYC painter and I will find you and post you. Maybe you already are.

  17. B.W. I am going to post Les Rogers soon so lets talk then. I wanted to give people a chance to see the show. But I know what you mean. Not in Rogers case but in general, I have been let down many times from reproductions.

  18. i almost cried when i saw les roger's new work. he is one of my faves, but i felt totally let down.

    sorry to get off topic.

  19. i heard that there weren't any good painters at columbia anymore.... since garth weiser graduated. can we have a garth weiser jpeg?

  20. do you know kanishka raja's work, painter? it's very dense and wierd... he's kind of always changing. it seems like you might be interested.

  21. gpd and bb thanks for the tips I will post them. are they both New Yorkers?
The painter BB suggested reminded me of the surrealist Remedios Varo. Do you know her work.

  22. didnt you once post elizabeth neel? she goes to columbia and she is awesome!

  23. painter: i can think of a bunch of other painters, do you still want suggestions from out here in the ether??

  24. PS: for example the christian schumann show wasn't discussed.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Christian Schumann, now there is a question. Was it a psychotic break? Natural development? What am I missing?

As for these, I don't know. I am scared and flailing, feverish. Gnashing my teeth. Can't be good.

  26. Sure I will take suggestions. Always.
I love Elizabeth Neel's work. Her show was great.

  27. Painter, you seem like the nicest fairest human. Excuse me for getting too personal. I am just so happy to visit your blog always.

  28. Oh MM thanks. I glad to have visitors, I didn't even know what a blog was until 6 months ago and when I started it, I never thought of getting visitors or comments. Now I am like 30 comments, oh boy.

  29. Carrie Moyer. Melissa Meyer. Wolf Kahn. I keep thinking of people and then forgetting.

Are non-NY based artists eligible if they are having a show in NY? If so, Sarah McEneaney. Maybe I already suggested these.

I am heavily addicted to this blog. I mentioned you in a studio space application I sent in today. I think I talked more about Painters NYC than me or my own work. When will be the Painters LA and the Painters Rest of America? Maybe that is when I will have to be intervened with.

    Good Night, Painter.

  33. Kanishka is a nyc guy. He had a show at envoy gallery in october. garth weiser is interesting, albeit a little photoshop-y. But they're nice.
I kinda don't mind this jpeg. It seems like a ballsy mixture of image and paint-style. I'd like to go see the show even if I have to schlep up to 29th street. I hope it really isn't to icky in person as w.w. says (didn't get a chance to tell you great painting w.w. - many new points for team abstraction.)
    All right, who's next?

  38. terrible, but everything's sold because of something suspicious in the artworld system (charlie finch????)

  39. has potential-a glib facility with a brush-but you cant just stick a damn flower on everything-it's not really felt, except the self portrait, which is very good.
