W.W. you have inside word on a lot of places. I am glad she found a new place. It sucks when a dealer does stuff like that to an artist. I had a similar experience and it messed me and my work up for a while but then something better always or hopefully comes a long.
I know something about Mr. I-20 and I am not ashamed to say it. Once, he offered to lick the bottom of my shoes if I let him come home with me. This was long ago. Needless to say it did not come to pass. However, his taste in Karen Heagle's work makes him seem almost human again. Thank goodness to the spirits of art for that.
So, I do think Karen's work is good, but why??? There are at least 3 or 4 grad students at every grad school every year that paint in this style, but she has a little something extra. what is it? is it all her subject choices? her skillz?
The pain of unrepresentation or representation by the wrong dealer is a bad pain. It rivals gonad pain. I am so happy to find people like you in the ether. Yous guys. Relief comes. Hope comes. Satisfaction in the ether. Cheers to the ether. Jeers to the bad guys.
I think it has to do, BB, in my opinion, with her variety of subject choices, yes, and her unafraid awkwardness. She emphasizes the awkward and it is charming. And her work is so unformulaic and seems to be close-up to her subjects rather than knowingly distant. This is my theory.
i think one reason that karens portraits are so powerful is their sexual ambiguity. and then the messiness of the paint and the colors are good. as a painter i really enjoy their painterliness.
my friend was looking at them yesterday and said they're the gayest paintings she has ever seen. she's gay so she said it in a totally good way. i thought karen would want to know that she got the thumbs up from gaydom. maybe that's what makes them so good!
It's true. Daniel Reich never showed her. He just sold her work off.I heard some lame excuse about it being better for him to show small- scale work on paper.She's been busting her ass a long time working day jobs. A nice person.
i am excited to see karen's show.
