Yuskavage's Tit Heaven watercolors, unforgettable! with the bad girls 1992 show at Elizabeth Koury...then Currin's palette knife girls show...that SHOCKED me. It really did. More than Oehlen, who I love for his abandon.
They (Currin, Yuskavage, Howe) opened up new mining of territory within figuration. It was huge and exciting. Of course many people were building on these themes in their studios, Ellen Phelan was making the doll paintings, Alex Katz was certainly working, Odd Nerdrum was showing, but Currin and Yuskavage were the first to bring out the conflict between history and present time on the surface of painting.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18710060.post-1142552589503991972006-03-16T18:43:00.000-05:002006-03-16T18:43:00.000-05:00i saw the show--it was no funi saw the show--it was no funAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18710060.post-1142551388809147152006-03-16T18:23:00.000-05:002006-03-16T18:23:00.000-05:00yeah, whatever Jay...yeah, whatever Jay...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18710060.post-1142545073707907502006-03-16T16:37:00.000-05:002006-03-16T16:37:00.000-05:00Don't y'all think it's kind of difficult to talk a...Don't y'all think it's kind of difficult to talk about this work, especially if you haven't seen it in person? The color reproduction on the web is for shit, plus you can't see what's really happening in the image. The images for the Mary Boone show from his last show looked just about nothing like the paintings in person, and also, the scale of the pieces is really nice to boot, which isn't at all reflected in a small-for-web image. The material use is really great and THAT certainly doesn't come across in this image. The use of matte and gloss mediums, touches of airbrush, paint that's been dragged with a knife, freehand bits, masked bits, and areas where he's playing within a close range of values. i like the fact that over the past few years he's been really playing and extending his repetoire within a tight range. he's found a lot of imaginative ways to make images within the contstraints he's set for himself.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18710060.post-1142533593797177832006-03-16T13:26:00.000-05:002006-03-16T13:26:00.000-05:00i can't believe you are such a sheep that you coul...i can't believe you are such a sheep that you couldn't love an unpopular thing until john currin made it popular for rich people to buy that thing. that's pathetic.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18710060.post-1142528257628619172006-03-16T11:57:00.000-05:002006-03-16T11:57:00.000-05:00I agree with those comments about John Currin. I think young painters today don't quite understand that. The way we can talk about 'loving' painting was a totally absurd thought before that generation came along. It wasn't just about the market.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18710060.post-1142525675840510962006-03-16T11:14:00.000-05:002006-03-16T11:14:00.000-05:00Anon 5:55, WELL SAID!!!Anon 5:55, WELL SAID!!!JDhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17567598971282429142noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18710060.post-1142523979948748552006-03-16T10:46:00.000-05:002006-03-16T10:46:00.000-05:00true anon 7:13a white male figurative painter rock...true anon 7:13
a white male figurative painter rocks the art world and is remembered forever?
haven't we heard this story before?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18710060.post-1142521985916866062006-03-16T10:13:00.000-05:002006-03-16T10:13:00.000-05:00if it's good and not an exact copy of a previous a...if it's good and not an exact copy of a previous artist than it is a discovery--that it, it is cutting edge.

also re:Currin.

Just because an artist manages to make a certain kind of art fashionable for people to buy doesn't mean that s/he actually influenced the artists in that genre who make that kind of work thereafter--they just influenced the market.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18710060.post-1142521781038202122006-03-16T10:09:00.000-05:002006-03-16T10:09:00.000-05:00Chris Ofili will be remembered. Thanks to Rudy.Chris Ofili will be remembered.
Thanks to Rudy.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18710060.post-1142521213095384092006-03-16T10:00:00.000-05:002006-03-16T10:00:00.000-05:00All art does not need to be cutting edge it only n...All art does not need to be cutting edge it only needs to be goodAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18710060.post-1142520473049559552006-03-16T09:47:00.000-05:002006-03-16T09:47:00.000-05:00i don't but i do make video about the system.i don't but i do make video about the system.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18710060.post-1142519833386743882006-03-16T09:37:00.000-05:002006-03-16T09:37:00.000-05:00I really don't understand how some you can be so s...I really don't understand how some you can be so skeptical of painting and still be making them.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18710060.post-1142517350416903002006-03-16T08:55:00.000-05:002006-03-16T08:55:00.000-05:00say what you will about currin, but before he star...say what you will about currin, but before he started making his paintings there wasn't a trace of figuration around.. and painting was still considered a 'dead' artform. there was the kind of uproar about his work that any of us could only hope to produce.. and the main reason was that he actually challenged the status quo. thousands of young artists that make image-based work that is loosely narrative, humorous, or about any kind of 'drive' (libidinal or other) owe a ton to john currin. even today's trends, like gloppy goofy neoexpressive figuration, wouldn't be possible without the currin link in the chain. we'd all be making videos about social hybridization. i know saltz called him conservative, so everyone is on that bandwagon now.. but he did flip the paradigm.. and frankly that term 'conservative' when talking about painting is really problematic. all painting is at least partially an homage to some previous style or era. that's a fact jack. so borrowing from the 1980's is more radical than borrowing from the 1680's? it's just a different chapter in the same art history book. i call bullshit. just because there is an east village nostalgia at the moment, doesn't mean that the young artists doing that work are actually revolutionary. ab-ex is back now too.. now THAT is cutting edge.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18710060.post-1142510454259902272006-03-16T07:00:00.000-05:002006-03-16T07:00:00.000-05:00Too funny.
