  1. Hi sorry it has been so long.
I wanted to post this show but the images are not allowed for posting so here is a link.
Please try to stay on topic of the work, it would make me happy.
    Happy New Year.

  4. I stand by my puritanical statement, glitter or no. DOes it take a refined taste to appreciate this work? In the end it brings you back to you, yourself and one is left feeling like you missed the Rosicrucian initiation rite, Ein, svei, drei, fuer!

Another word for that is hermetic, but lets just say op-aque - and move on to the allusions to Sea Fairing, and ships.

    Slug slime tracks glitter BTW.

I guess what Im saying is any read on the KK is based more on you then her - I think its entirely phenomenological - or as Carlos Castenada says, "stops the world"

Once you have reached the still mind, you can see that any associations with Napoleon, magazines, pop culture, clouds, global warming, puritanism, moons, birthday cakes, little girls and a dark seamy underbelly are largely phantoms created by the signifier-refferent dichotomy (but not the signified, because the painting is not it, in and of itself - in that way I argue this work is phenomenological, which is a bigger bugbear than melancholy by along shot, get on the bandwagon).

Nope, this is the thing in and of itself, as represented by stella's famous "what you see is what you see" or by the more recent "What you see is what you get" (WYSIWYG) editors for all things web.

  5. 6. LOADING THE LANGUAGE

the language of the totalist environment is characterized by the
    thought-terminating cliche (thought-stoppers)
    repetitiously centered on all-encompassing jargon
    "the language of non-thought"
words are given new meanings -- the outside world does not use the
words or phrases in the same way -- it becomes a "group" word or
    phrase

  18. dr. drew says everyone is more narccisistic these days due to antibiotics and the pill. death is not a part of our lives. he says celebrities are the apotheosis of narcissism. (i guess he hasnt studied artists)

but anyway KK is making little portraits of moments in time-- that she never experienced. at least roy batty experienced his moments. I prefer the horror of experience rather than the melancholy of her long view of time as vacuum. But I don't mind her take on time. it's hard to get it into a picture.

Good to see you back and a Happy New Year.

Karen Kilimnik is so - so. I liked some of her older work. This exhibition is lifeless.

"Right now, if the statistics are correct, about 15 percent of Americans are not happy. Soon, perhaps, with the help of psychopharmaceuticals, melancholics will become unknown. That would be an unparalleled tragedy, equivalent in scope to the annihilation of the sperm whale or the golden eagle. With no more melancholics, we would live in a world in which everyone simply accepted the status quo, in which everyone would simply be content with the given. This would constitute a nightmare worthy of Philip K. Dick, a police state of Pollyannas, a flatland that offers nothing new under the sun. Why are we pushing toward such a hellish condition?"

Also, its ok to speak with an inauthentic voice (Thank you Tom Cruise! thank you Hannah Montanna!)- you can stop making art about how inuathenticly authentic your position is - in case you are still dug into a cave in the Fiji Islands or whatever.

  25. The temperature down part is what I like. Pat, I would think of the exhibition place as a set> And the paintings are the story-lines/ characters/ caricatures, some so cool some very warm, and this is what comes to life as the play. The plot, is, well, 'timeliness' the characters 'timeless'. She has a show in Cologne that has the same or similar lighting fixture, don't know about the dust, but the same very lean fill, some photos, fantasy, drawings of personal stuff, some trees... temperatures down though more regular speed. The changes going round have not hit there yet, it seems.

  32. Here, as elsewhere in her work, Kilimnik revels in the dual nature of folly itself: that which is both pitifully foolish and deliciously enchanting.

    - artforum

    ReplyDelete
  33. Mr. T or Trix don't matter to me, I pity the fool or they're magicly delicious, thats a dichotomy that drives change, as Derrida would say, were he alive - hes a glass half not empty kinda guy so maybe hes not not dead. It's the same dilemma I have every day when I decide not take candy from a baby. One it's easier than it looks, and two it's just not done, it's unethical and uncivil. Decent, cool people don't do it, and that's that. Kind of Catholic, or maybe its just a personal hairshirt. Oh yeah. life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone. That's my life with the killer in me - maybe you too. Nobody expects you to be the spanish inquisition. That shit won;t fly - attacked on all sides like a hornets nest of resentment. Hazing ritual really. I guess. It's just in the air right?

  34. Things seem too dangerous for folly. I don't know, they dont enchant me. Takes more than glitter, a chandelier, and water based paint. How bout a little risk?

reading obit of bobby fischer -- thinking about the tantrum. When bobby has them its part of legend, he's a cool genius/winner, even if he loses, he's always a winner. When Britney has them she's a mentally ill venus/mother. She wants to be both and they just wont let her. Born to lose white trash.

If you don't hold yourself back, they will. Can you wiggle out of that one with folly?

Diggin on Paul Kos today, as always

  35. he title "Moriae Encomium" can also be read as meaning "In praise of More". The double or triple meanings go on through the text. There have been reports that a similar phenomenon to folie à deux had been induced by the military incapacitating agent BZ in the late 60s, and most recently again by anthropologists in the South American rainforest consuming the hallucinogen ayahuasca. He also describes vividly his repeated experiences of shared consciousness with his captors: group vision sessions in which all participants see the same visions simultaneously.

  36. this is why; really ego /centric schools of thought like many material scientists look at the obvious folly of duality ; in fields like quantom theory but then basicly say oh tha;t's neat then run like hell back to their newtanic worlds of laws and atoms

  45. even the most radical acts of history are now absorbed into the status quo. money is old. when you address previous centuries you stir nostalgia from the investment community.

karen never does interviews, but she likes old ballet, castles, traveling about in a horse and buggy - and drawing on all aspects of bygone era's. it's the stuff old guard museums and collectors really dig.

she fills old buildings with new tributes to themselves, just like at Basel in 05. She's on a journey/fantasy, lives on her own, curators and rarely anybody has been there. Mystery plays a part.

The future is flexible (and therefore challenging) though the past seems to be set in stone. The present is ice-cream. Usually your artist will be in one or a few. The ones taking a stonemasons chisel to the pile of ice-cream are interesting, but not always.

Kilimniks work "fits" with museum/collector's 18th century mansion decor most of the time and that's how she seems to want it to be. Though she has inspired quite a range of artists in her time, they say. Peyton being the obvious example (though she'll tell you it's Hockney) and even Jim Hodges (by repetitive and thoughtful processes that lead to a poetic but accessible understanding of the more ephemeral moments of personal experience..

  46. The terrible heritage of Bad Painting is the diminishing return on pursuing and failing The Good.

Tucker shrewdly did not attempt to sustain with her thesis.

    Formalism cannot be circumvented indefinitely.

    ReplyDelete
  47. If you think Karen's puritanical, here come CAP.

Bad Painting was a must. It happened before the thesis. Still happening. Desparate for a false unity? Give it time.

Karen doesnt seem to be directly in the legacy, she's too conceptual

    ReplyDelete
  48. In 1978 it was a must. In 2008 it’s just musty.

Bad Painting WAS a thesis - the term coined by Marcia Tucker for the show she curated of that name.

The works did not exist under that description before hand. And actually there are much better descriptions for what was happening in the work at the time, but the show makes the term currency, makes the collection a thing - AFTER the thesis.

Karen milks the tradition for all its worth, through its 80s East Village variants (Condo) into the 90s (Shaw's Thrift Store Paintings). She's late and slow alright. In fact she has to reduce herself to a childish ditz to sustain any perception of 'Good' still capable of being dissed.

    Karen drifts on a cloud,
Sets down, with the sun in her eyes

    Nature: it's such a nicher.

  54. I think her stuff works better as installations. I take it that’s what the glitter on the walls was sort of meant to do – draw the walls into the perception of the work – treat the whole thing as an ensemble and give it a bit more of her favored *F*A*I*R*Y*T*A*L*E* spin.

    Yeah well.

I don’t think it works here for various reasons, but in earlier ones when you have just a cluster of these little no-name knock-offs surrounded with furniture and stuff, the effect is quite different, kind of obsessive and insecure. It’s like someone trying to convince themselves they know where all this stuff goes, what it’s for, but they don’t really. Really they’re having trouble relating to any of it, much less discriminating quality.

Good, Bad – some of them are just trying to get into the ballpark .

  56. It's called "luck."

In battlegrounds, the casting time for resurrection is 30 seconds. You can time it yourself if you want. Every 30 seconds, like clockwork, for the entirety of the match, a resurrection is cast. If you are standing in range when it is cast, you are resurrected.

If the Horde are rezzing in 5-10 seconds, it is because they are dying when there are 5-10 seconds left on the cast. It all depends on when you die

"..and if, according to Hardt and Negri's Empire, the rise of Empire is the end of national conflict, the "enemy" now, whoever he is, can no longer be ideological or national. The enemy now must be understood as a kind of criminal, as someone who represents a threat not to a political system or a nation but to the law. This is the enemy as a terrorist.... Hardt and Negri get this absolutely right when they say that in the "new order that envelops the entire space of... civilization", where conflict between nations has been made irrelevant, the "enemy" is simultaneously "banalized" (reduced to an object of routine police repression) and absolutized (as the Enemy, an absolute threat to the ethical order"[2])."[3]

remember curators (or rather, hurry up and forget) to pretend to NOT be doing what you are doing in order to facilitate what artists have always done. Then you will seem CLEVER. This is what it is about. CLEVERNESS. Sophistication wrapped up in a ball of sincerity is not sincere (but it is). We're all obsessed with gray. 73. A famous art collector is walking through the city when he notices a mangy cat lapping milk from a saucer in the doorway of a store. He does a double take.

He knows that the saucer is extremely old and very valuable, so he walks casually into the store and offers to buy the cat for two dollars.

The storeowner replies, "I'm sorry, but the cat isn't for sale."

The collector says, "Please, I need a hungry cat around the house to catch mice. I'll pay you 20 dollars for that cat."

And the owner says "Sold," and hands over the cat.

The collector continues, "Hey, for the twenty bucks I wonder if you could throw in that old saucer. The cat's used to it and it'll save me from having to get a dish."

The owner says, "Sorry buddy, but that's my lucky saucer. So far this week I've sold sixty-eight cats."

  74. Johnny made a record, Went straight up to number one,
Suddenly everyone loved to hear him sing the song.
Watching the world go by, surprising it goes so fast.
Johnny looked around him and said, 'Well, I made the big time at last'.

  75. If you see something that looks like a star
And it's shooting up out of the ground
And your head is spinning from a loud guitar
And you just can't escape from the sound
Don't worry too much it'll happen to you
We were children once playing with toys

And the thing that you're hearing is only the sound
Of the low spark of high-heeled boys, high-heeled boys

If you had just a minute to breathe
And they granted you one final wish
Would you ask for something like another chance
    Or something similar as this
Don't worry too much it'll happen to you
As sure as your sorrows are joys

And the thing that disturbs you is only the sound
Of the low spark of high-heeled boys

The percentage you're paying is too high priced
While you're living beyond all you're means
And the man in the suit has just bought a new car
From the profit he's made on your dreams
But today you just read that the man was shot dead
By a gun that didn't make any noise
But it wasn't the bullet that laid him to rest
Was the low spark of high-heeled boys, high-heeled boys

If I gave you everything that I owned
And asked for nothing in return
Would you do the same for me as I would for you
Or take me for a ride
And strip me of everything including my pride
But spirit is something that no one destroys

And the sound that disturbs you is only the sound
Of the low spark of high-heeled boys

The percentage you're paying is too high priced
While you're living beyond all you're means
And the man in the suit has just bought a new car
From the profit he's made on your dreams
But today you just read that the man was shot dead
By a gun that didn't make any noise
But it wasn't the bullet that laid him to rest
Was the low spark of high-heeled boys, high-heeled boys

  76. Skydive naked
    From an aeroplane
    Or a lady with a
    Body from outerspace
    My heart, my heart
    Kickstart my heart

    Say i got trouble
    Trouble in my eyes
    I'm just looking for
    Another good time
    My heart, my heart
    Kickstart my heart

    Safe, dance!

    [Spoken]
We can dance if we want to
We can leave your friends behind
'Cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance
Well they're no friends of mine
I say, we can go where we want to
A place where they will never find
And we can act like we come from out of this world
Leave the real one far behind
    And we can dance

    [Sung]
We can dance if we want to
We can leave your friends behind
'Cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance
Well they're no friends of mine
I say, we can go where we want to
A place where they will never find
And we can act like we come from out of this world
Leave the real one far behind
    And we can dance
    Danc¨¦e!

We can go when we want to
The night is young and so am I
And we can dress real neat from our hats to our feet
And surprise 'em with the victory cry
Say, we can act if want to
    If we don't nobody will
And you can act real rude and totally removed
And I can act like an imbecile

    [Refrain]
I say, we can dance, we can dance
    Everything out of control
We can dance, we can dance
We're doing it from wall to wall
We can dance, we can dance
    Everybody look at your hands
We can dance, we can dance
    Everybody takin' the cha-a-a-ance

    Safety dance
    Is it safe to dance
    Is it safe to dance

    S-s-s-s A-a-a-a F-f-f-f E-e-e-e T-t-t-t Y-y-y-y
    Safe, dance!

We can dance if we want to
We've got all your life and mine
As long as we abuse it, never gonna lose it
    Everything'll work out right
I say, we can dance if we want to
We can leave your friends behind
'Cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance
Well they're no friends of mine

    [Refrain]

Is it safe to dance, oh is it safe to dance [6x]
    Is it safe to dance

  78. So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure,
How amazingly unlikely is your birth,
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space,
'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth.

Or blue moon, if you are into that junk. Whatcha gonna do with all that junk, all that junk in your trunk? To my eye its coming at you as you float through space, spilling past you until the transmissions cease at the cornea.

Call me for your lover's lover's alibi / squash, drawing cool blue raves /
    Death wants a divorce.
