  3. this breaths everything others wish their work could; energy, irony, sincerity, political/social commentary, humor, stoicism...
i also enjoy the material use, it is fucked up just enough...and, likewise created with just the right amount of love.

  4. I love this. Warm, enjoyable, conscious, pointed, well crafted but transcending mere craft. Two things so hard to find these dayz: relavent message , natural human-scale humor. (see Caleb Weintraub for stiff Kerry-campaign style humor/robot-stiff didactic message conveyance).

  8. Sorry, this isn't a painting. It's a collage. And it's got words. Can't assess as a painting.

  9. the irror reminds me of vermeer or renaissance painting or whatever. Its like a goddamned religious icon or something. A halo. Gods country. A well. A singularity. We are all joined together by the ubiquity of snack foods. Regional warm front of Combos. Cold front of Doritos Cool Ranch Flavor. Lots of resin like Keinholz. Bury me in my car. Shoot to kill.Shoot to thrill, air it out on stage axe kick diamond dave rage, rage against the endless night.

  10. summer come on summer. COme on summer come on come on summer summer come on.

Rythm formal issues you know, the medium is secondary to that . Even paint. A poorly collaged figure is the result of poor observational skills, not the inability to use paste. A poor drawing is not the pencils fault. I could glue you a great image of the dali lama out of tums to rival any venus velvet. Rub the belly of the Buddha from the inside. Chime in anytime to stop me i can keep going and going and going and going. Put another dime in the juke box baby and ill deliver a bubble full of joy, an inexpensive plastic toy, maybe a fake tatoo one mindet fits all, you dont mind do you? Hoping for the rubber rat instead you get a daisy chain hoping for another daisy to complete itself with. Was this work hung in a subversive context so it could interogate itself? Did it situate its elf on the top shelf and larry? WHos larry? Hes not in the picture.

  17. @closeuup the jokes sucked.....

  18. Hmmm, all that study, anyway, my news is that we have these new handsets that you plug into your keitai mobile telephone. They are cool, they come in four colors and they are replicas of the real thing. The don't fit into your bag or your pocket but look and work really cool. Also just out are these phone covers. They are replicas of the hand phones of about fifteen years ago. They are huge but not heavy like the originals. Your sleek minimal handy phone just fits in and you close the hatch and there you are, huge... without the iron table and the pool, but almost with everything else.
Art and life are the same, so it seems no matter where you are. We look to the past out of fascination, humor, so, how did the tuna get in the can? It swam there? And so fresh!

  19. ive worked in many ad agencies, so i thot the jokes were good.

  21. I also like his furniture all I really need is one chair though do you think they'd be willing to break up the set ?
    no, not mike

    ReplyDelete
  22. Whoa george, that not-mike thing was insane. I agree that his work is seriously indebted to Kelley. In fact I have a Mike Kelley book that he wrote the introduction to.

  23. That assemblage is by the artist Alfonso Ossorio (1916-1990)

Here's a painting of his from 1944 at Smithsonian

    More here, including a closeup

He was active in the NY scene, a friend of Jackson Pollock and as I recall, wealthy which worked against him. Harvard has some drawings online but I couldn't find a picture of the painting I was thinking of when Zip posted the Kelly link.

The Ossorio Foundation has a nice installation view of some works but not many individual pictures.

  25. i bitched about this at a big fancy party and - i heard jer and robbie supported zach but he is on his way out now so shut up who cares.

  26. and it lacks the intelligence of kelly, "in the style of" not mode or means. not kelly really not kelly at all.

  27. Everybody should do some bas relief type stuff. Its a great way to express yourself. You can go with melancholy nostalgia like cornell - you just cant get that with paint no matter how much texturizer and extender you add to your acrylics.

I like the furniture, no sweat Id love to be at the meetings with my tablet computer and be the iconoclast who shakes shit up, writes punchy ad copy with an edge and wins the big account while I get a head in advertising. My reel is kick ass.

If you want some real jokes go to the G Line and look at what the Pratt students write on the posters - often hillarious, especially after a beer or two in the morning, you know?

Im with cooky - its pretty tame - and Didnt Alex Baggg do a satanic ad agency? Look it up.

Me Im more into brand hijack.

  28. "Mike Kelley's Proposal for the Decoration of an Island of Conference Rooms (with Copy Room) for an Advertising Agency Designed by Frank Gehry", 1992, Public Art

Read Kelley's Satanic Verse - its as fake as a rake and I dont think this progress is making it. If I only had a brain.

Yep its kelley, kelly all the way - mentally maybe not so funny money but its in the same park bench feeding asprin to the pigeons.

I hear plagiarism is in as a strategy where before it was just stealing from meaningless pop and now since art is now emptied of meaning, its just pop popping like corn don't you know. WHo put a brick in a book first? I got an anonymous one one time back in 1997 or so - I was a cocky motherfucker back then. Full of piss and vinegar, I was a regular volcano at the science fair, thought I could make it anywhere as long as I had a good idea but i guess ideas just grow in the air like birdshit.

  29. there is a system behind a kelly - he "Popped Up" the Cass Corridor Movement.

to compare surfaces is pretty Art School.

  31. I was going with funk, which is sort of form follows function, pun intended. My history book placed it as California, but Detroit is fine by me.

And then theres the wall text - a conceptual dealio that botha rtists use, and as I mentioned they both construct false narratives - though kelley is more stream of consciousness, - but Im no expert so ill stop there and worry about my hair.

  35. Mike Kelley: Punk Conceptualist, August 31, 2000
Mike Kelley's excellent catalog from Phaidon may be the most definitive work to date concerning the merging of Elite and Popular culture. Kelley's use of his own astute observations about the world in which we live to "debunk belief systems" and deflate popular pretentions is nothing short of revelatory. His pathetic stance in sculpture, drawing, performance, sound, and banner-making constitute total war on austerity. All modes of his work are well-documented here with color photography of installations and descriptions and criticism by some of the best in their fields.

  39. an thats what makes it academic - and not mike kelly...

like jer the ever pointer dog with "thats the curator" in the belly of the bellwether tonight...

lots to say, not so much to look at work wise. at a certain point chatter = white noise.

    put up or shut up.

  40. be it here noticed that I declair any piece of art resembling folk art made by a fine artist to be folk art and that artist to be a folk artist for the duration of the period they devoted to the said piece, including Mike Kelley, ironic or not. Fuck that dude.

    amen.

  44. I am not pissed off by this persons work. I am not emotional about it on any level. That is not a good way to discuss it in my view.
It is a type theory based work that I find uninspiring and trite in it's criteria of banality.

    In short it's BS.
