These works create an intelligent 'conceptual' space which reveals the artist's decision process, and that is rare in today's painting anywhere. She sets up her own rules convincingly enough to let us see where she chooses to break them. Honest, open painting without any imposed 'cleverness'.

Looks like an orgasm to me.

I wish I had a positive comment. But this paint handling and color is clumsy and unconvincing. Not for me.

last night I had a dream that I was having sex with a polar bear in an African desert. She should paint that. And I should stop drinking.

the works sends itself in a certain direction then cancels it...and heads off again... I really like it... I think Cross has a pretty good take on the work...the other jpegs from this exhibition look quite promising as well. In regards to clever...the proof is in the painting.

paint handling can be clumsy and convincing..it's not though, if anything it's fairly straight-forward and specific.

I imagine she will do just fine...she has a broader more interesting vocabulary and a much more sensitive use of it than Rae.

i find myself putting it in the domestic abstraction category.. which i am sure i find myself reacting so harshly against feeling the pressure of late 20's with out a mate...

had a dream i walked into Christie's with a Gun last night that was i unsure if it was loaded or not.. only the whole room was rendered in thick oils and i kept sliding in the Quinacridone Rose try to make sure it didn't go off.. - i should prob. let up on discoin till the sun comes up.

I had a dream, I had an awesome dream...
Ended with some cat eyed toad zombie monster cornering me somewhere. The Pentagon. No more like a college campus. Out back in the garden. Paved walkway. Lots of places to hide but nowhere to run. I awoke with a yelp. How awesome is that. Gaaaah!
Dr. Doomsday meets ruby slippers. Cheese sandwich and chocolate ice cream for dinner. That'll get ya.

The last time I had a zombie dream it was my grandmas house and it was sunny. Day of the Dead.

THis painting reminds me of Jennifer Bartlett - the clock paintings or whatever. Grids. Its always hard to fill space, especially a big canvas. and so you have to break it up. The ice. Then you have to make it fit together. The puzzle. Then it gets meaning- willy nilly wonka wafer.

Agnes Martin makes me laugh. She can paint as big as she wants now.
Good riddance.

"I realized there were other girls there who wore black T-shirts and read Sarte and were depressed,"

-Amy Sillman

This stuff looks simular in feel to andrew Kreps/kern style wave your hands in the air cuz you just dont care stuff.

I didg that. But Im also profoundly bored by it.

Notice how the vertical sides of the jpeg seem to collapse in. The top edge dips to the side of the pinkies too.
This would suggest the artist is working with anti-composition strategies.

There are some nice things going on, as muffins mentions--straightening and breaking rules--though if we're going to embark on the anti-composition thing the loftiest thing alive on-this-earth in flat art, you have to get a scratch-on-the-rules.

Forget that! Just take time to see what going on, then employ some strategy!

Visual language leaves most "painters" speechless. This is good painting.

Oh, irony! We don't get that here. See, people ski topless here while
smoking dope, so irony's not really a high priority. We haven't had
any irony here since about, uh, '83, when I was the only practitioner
of it. And I stopped because I was tired of being stared at.

Compositionall?

Every corner is different.

The greys, I mean paines grey (painfully) accents the pink

The colors form discrete areas, aranged in a reasonably charged, meaning disequilibriated, composition; weighted to the left. ROck on composition controll!

The large black area is mitigated by some interference from the greay - hard edge oval (egg/nest/womb) is broken
by the pussywillow/cattail-like forms.

To which I say, nice cootch. Theres some pebbles theres a gizzard - I see a bird.

But I also see urban decay, stucco, the ubiquitous subway journey...I can read all kinds of things into it.

Is there light at the end of the tunnel?

But if you think in terms of space i dunno, you could say it shift to the right in a foreground bg kind of way. Dali loved that surreal shit. Doesnt bug me none.

The grey bugs me. lazy. But maybe Im projecting. I wish someone would mix paint and stretch canvas for me. Who doesnt?

zipthwung said...

on third thought, I could bever make something like this work compositionally.
Its inherently flawed -which means thats the point. But then you have to deal with the flaw. Its like a c-section without a plan. Triage. Make some decisions.

i like bever.

its all going to be poetry for a while...

Organizing these myths these trends these
traditions these rituals
this history this pattern
this secret this hope
Organizing these stars into one bright dot of hot
white light

As simple as that

Its all going to be sports from here on in. Got to level the playing field.
This painting starts at first base, gets a base hit to second and then tries to steal third on a bunt.

No way jose! The pitcher might not be able to hit, but you have to at least try. This here is hard ball.

Im sitting here on the bench chewing my bubbalicious, and all I can think is, nice start.

I'm sure they look great in person, giant, big, and the beezkneez.

There is love from some posters. I'm too tough!
And when there is love, there is 'who cares': the world could spin up-side-down, for lovers toes never hit the ground, whose spin in not of and in the same air, as love's is.

For zip: there are two types of flaws. No there are five kinds of flaws, of which two are the 'natural' and the 'synthetic'. The synthetic flaw is not the same as the natural one. Try and get that back into the 'no animal abuse tube', silver grey as it is!!

"tries to steal third on a bunt" is unpardonable... momentum only takes you so far...and good baseball sense... says hold up. Bubbalicious smells like carpooling to Little League...This painting smells of Bubbalicious and still competes.
