I'm whining but I wish you had posted David Altmejd instead.

no-where-man said...

ok what is the connection with David Altmejd? - he hits and hits hard.

Ronay is SUCH a nard.

Sven said...

he's also at andrea rosen..they got these from that website

And both were in the 2004 Biennial.

Matthew Ronay is funny in way different than Rachel Harrison: perverse, outlandish, raucous.

Also, narrative.

I like john miller

altjmed hits about as hard as a baby shitting his diaper.

Camron, that's true. "Funny" is relative. We laughed, others groaned.

i like the duane hanson sculptures in the background. the other stuff is too cute.

no-where-man said...

went 2 all 3 of those openings, still bit broad,.. "funny" like the kid that gets beat up everyday for good reason on the playground.

David Altmejd is layered with a ecstasy and tragity.

"Leprosy Hand on Vagina Float"? Wow I hate these titles.

Wow we have made negative personal comments ( maybe true or based on personal experience though) about two of the recent artists. Painter HATES that. Good thing he/she is on vacation. For the recored I've already decided my own negative persona. Please spread it 'round.
-trash has been at the party at 2:00 AM still trying to get laid.
OR
volatile loner with anger management problems and addiction issues
Can't choose. Both so tempting.

"Who is more to be pitied, a writer bound and gagged by policemen or one living in perfect freedom who has nothing more to say?"

kelli said...

No-where I see your point but artist's personalities are becoming like Oscar gowns: nobody wants to be Cher with their ass hanging out so everybody shows up in something tasteful. We cannot compete with the Brits for flamboyance and bad behavior. I saw Tracey Emin and she has this total rock star thing happening but I think she gets away with it because of:
-British accent
-bad teeth
-good boobs, really good

Who would you rather be Mr. T

or Mr. Teas?

kelli said...

Zip you nasty . What tea is that? Rose Hips.

that kind of internet art is so frightening. kind of reminded me of Dylan Stone's sculptures of his intimate sex acts.

zip I think Altmejd started off a lot stronger, he's maybe stumbling a little now, but why exactly dont you like him? glitter, mirrors and lycanthropy is getting a little played out, but he was one the first to start that wave, if that means anything. my fav piece was the first I saw by him, that had weird gay propoganda messages in it. I really liked that vein of his work. I can see if its just too young and trendy for some people
just interested in your critique

there is something timeless about disco call it dumb call it young but its where u bottom out on shallow. don't u think that every time you wake up lost and sweeting glitter - wondering where your 80's went? timeless...

Rag Doll, livin' in a movie
Hot tramp, Daddy's little cutie
So fine, they'll never see ya
Leavin' by the back door, man
Hot time, get it while it's easy
Don't mind, come on up and see me
Rag Doll, baby won't you do me
Like you done before

kelli said...

disco. glitter. There was this guy who used to come in to my job. Conservative, masculine, bearded but every now and then he would show up with glitter all over his face. I always wondered where his face had been.

no-where-man said...

aids? you think aids is a disco born? hi 2006 called it said wake up.

Old enough to remember the Reagan administration talking about quarantining AIDs patients. I couldn't believe it when they made such a big deal about his funeral.
I kind of look back on the amazing political art from that era and wonder why I should care about humourous sculpture. (But I'm probably no better myself).
funny art. just not having it.

WOuld you rather be a cyborg or a godess?

altjmed - formally i liked his werewolf decaying into geode crystal/fools gold - but the mirror constructions are sort of alienating without doing much but filling space pedestals as pedestals - my sculpture prof allways said "n o bases" meaning unless it adds to the narrative/concept then its excess. Excessive pedestals - Branchussi for example turned the pedestal into colonial sculpture.

altjmed'd be better off working larger instead. Take for example Ryan McGuines's AWESOMEly vapid mirror maze at Deitch - shallow, fashionable - but not much formally or even conceptually interesting -
whereas his more considered rebus-like paintings are at least fun to read - like concrete poetry. Who invented concrete poetry, for a dime?

As a caveat or whatever - commodity fetishism doesnt seem to be adressed very well in a white box gallery setting. Macys would make a much more powerfull statement, were one to actually believe their own hype.
Remember Claes Oldenburg's Store? So quaint.

Which is where takashi murakami might have been good, but then Canal street upstaged him by selling knockoffs. Or was he even thinking about that?

What is value anyway?

In conclusion, I've been going with the whole commodity thing - but in the end I dont think altjmeds work is about commodity for the artist anymore than Picasso's Guernica was about man's inhumanity to man, for example.
Or the other way around.
Readerly writerly butterfly nightly.
Public, private, Im on the outside. Wonder how people curtate their altjmeds.

How about all that global warming stuff? Remember when 30,000 people boiled to death in Europe 2003? No? Me neither. I got air.

Zip about Murakami. I saw a lady on the 2 train not just sporting a fake logo bag but a logo sundress, logo tights, logo pumps, the works. Almost as good as the gentleman I also saw on the 2 with a full length maroon fur coat, walking cane and (brown) Vuitton bag. All of us are upstaged. It's impossible to compete.

Re: Upstaged: There's an article about Elizabeth Taylor in the Aug Bazaar--the one w Britany on the cover. There's a pic in there of Liz sitting on the couch in her house w her doggie on her lap. What is she 75 years old? Hideous old fat witch with the most gorgeous Modigliani painting behind her, coffee table full of huge purple crystals in front of her. She pulls out an old picture of her kissing Richard Burton to show Michael Kors and she kisses the picture.

She's still got everything fake and everything real in one place.
