you gotta be kidding, the spider lady?

Goble sorry I can't join in. I'm usually just indifferent to artists I don't like with a few exceptions. The totemic nature and simplicity of her work is totally unerotic and devoid of pathos or interest for me. It seems like a Western version of "primitive" art. Leaves me cold the same way Henry Moore does.

thats kind of eerie...I was going to launch a subtle attack by calling her work "primitive" but decided against it as I thought I would get railed on. I have seen some stuff by her that I like, but I saw the spider and it left me completely cold. Work that is this personal and self-sustained can be kind of exclusionary in a wierd way. That being said does she still hold open studio every weekend?

In some way I like her work for being its own kind of primitive;however, that role can be viewed as problematic when considering her self-awareness. To pull off having a conversation only with oneself is a very difficult task.

Feeling by Freud through a Western conception of primitive art
Mary Gaitskill finally wrote another book. Only 4 books in twenty years: brutal, perfect and complex. The opposite of fake primitivism and simplicity in art. And she said better than I can something about simplicity:
"His body reduced to a dumb totem with a single meaning. And Veronica, her ugly face, her proofreader's kit, her rulers, her box of colored pencils, her prissiness which denied the shit of the world and so drew it down upon herself"

She is brilliant, and "tapped in" to something not primative, but primal, essential. Gets right to the meat of things... fearless. We can only hope to be this simple and deep when we reach her age. I think she just keeps getting better.

essential is the perfect word,
A Freudian biologism Jessica Benjamin has done a good job of dissecting.
The errant daughter dressing up in the father's clothes. The ego trotting out the id in museum spaces.
If I want real feeling I'll look at Durer's Melancholia.
