Oh, this guy's work is great! It was in the project room at Nicole Klagsbrun last fall, I think. In person, they are really amazingly physical and very inventive. Using paint the way that he does to describe banalities such as computer keyboards and laptops feels like high comedy, and the color is amazing. It's a bit hard to tell from this jpeg. Here's more:
i can get into the way he frosts with thick paint, especially that top part that is pretty beautiful. a whole show of atms and laptops (like at selwyn) seems a bit myopic and cute though. makes me think of sam messer's typewriter series. not necessarily a good thing. what has he done lately? anybody know?
Another thing: if you go to that Selwyn link, be sure to click on the images to make them larger, so you can see the weird stuff he does with the paint.
i loved his show at Klagsburn - the color was glorious and refreshing. the "subject matter" is kind of goofball but it didn't hang me up - yes, what he is setting up is really simplistic and funny/absurdist but it works as enough of a concept for me. these paintings take off from there.
I remember really liking this show too, it was a bright spot in my day. There is a lot of texture and collaged on weirdness that gets lost in the jpeg, button-like items. I too was not dissuaded by subject matter, in part because I remember seeing nothing but yuck in Chelsea that day...so it could have been contextual, contingent love. Must see again in person to know for sure.
These paintings seem like thw work of a frustrated industrial designer. I'm one too. I want to work with surgical steel, diamond plate and latex. The cost is prohibitive, so I've resorted to heavy duty black plastic sheeting, dollar store tools and duct tape. Lots of duct tape.
He was at Klagsbrun in November of 05. He will be on their new website launcing in two weeks. There is one small new painting at the Foundaton for Contemporary Art benefit currently at Bortoloami Dayan (on west 25th between 10th and 11th).
about an hour ago i saw that group benefit show curated by clarissa dalrymple at bartolami dayan. zielinski has a painting in it. i got right up to the thing and it did not speak to me. sorry.
The atm/laptop subject matter is an excellent vehicle for his paint manipulations. Humorous and right on. I think the color keeps them from seeming too cute. I really like these as a group.

His subject matter, which I find interestingly handled in the context of these paintings, is, on its own, irrelevant. It is secondary to the painted images.
ww re the sam messer typewriter thing, you kind of nailed it, since he went to yale and probably had crits w/ sam messer! i too fell in love w/ these at the klagsbrun show. i think the thick paint is partly just to hold the sculptural stuff in-- little tubes and buttons, like keyboard stuff. They are atm machines and laptops and other "important" stuff which he makes lumpy, abject, off, misssapen, & wrong by his painterly constructions. and then the color is hilarious in real life. i think the color on the marc selwyn site is totally off. i am a fan.
The funny thing is (with regards to subject matter) that the paintings are still about the paint and not the technology depicted. Is that ok? I am bored with that...why not just flip out and make crusty chunky fun paintings and avoid the PM.
